My mom was diagnosed yesterday with salvatory gland cancer. The dr. doesn't think the cancer started there and she is having a PET scan next week. She is 82 and we haven't had any types of cancer in our family, except her sister who had lung cancer (smoker).
The dr. had to aspirate twice to get cells and I'm hoping the pathologist was wrong. I was misdiagnosed with lymphoma 5 years ago because of a pathologist error. A girl can hope - right?
10/14 update -
Went today for PET scan results. PET scan did not show salivary gland as a hot spot!! No other hot spots accept a little on top of roof of mouth. Dr. said it wasn't "hot" enough for concern and did another exam and doesn't see anything suspicious. Also needs to get an EKG and they said there was some calcification in her carotid artery so we will have to address those issues. We are scheduling surgery to have gland removed and it will be biopsied, but for now this is the best news possible!

BIG HUGS we are going through this with MIL now. She was diagnosed with Stage2 Breast Cancer, the lump is so large they can't remove it just yet. But they are still saying it very treatable! They have given her heavy meds to try and shrink it first. She did a PET scan a few days ago to make sure it hasn't spread. We find out on the 21st. If the meds don't work they will start chemo. She has numerous other health issues and epilepsy. Not sure how she will do with Chemo. But she is like your mom 82. They say it's very treatable so thee is always hope. There is no cancer history in our family either so it was a bit of a surprise anyway. That and she's 82! I totally understand the shock. But there is hope- you have to have hope. I always tell myself their are amazing things they do in the medical field and it changes all the time. Best of luck to you and your mom!

Here's hoping... As hard as it is to not worry about it, I hope you're able to get a scientist brain working and do some research now. If you don't need the treatment info, great. If it turns out you need it you'll be ready with info and questions to ask the Drs. {{{hugs}}}

Cancer sucks. MI will never forget how lost I felt when my mom was diagnosed with cancer. Although she lost her battle, I believe the hope she carried helped her live longer and happier after her first diagnosis. I hope for the best possible outcome for your mom!

A co-worker was diagnosed with that cancer last winter. She went through a course of radiation (8 weeks maybe) and she is cancer free now. Her dentist actually was the first to notice something wrong. She said the radiation was tough, but she is doing very well now.

Did they have a primary site for the cancer? The dr. said it's unlikely that it started in her salivary gland.
