It's always been my passion, must go abroad every year. I like to go somewhere different every year, I never cook or ordered room service, I've only done one all inclusive I actually prefer to go to different restaurants every night for dinner. I tend to do more city vacations but love the beach too. I stay in hotels, never an airbnb. I like to cruise as well.

We tend to do 2 or 3 types of holiday. Most years we rent a villa and go to Portugal with family. Often that’s 10-12 of us, these days it’s 4 generations. We usually do salad/cold meats type simple lunches where we all pitch in or take turns, then in the evenings we mostly eat out - often in groups rather than all together. Sometimes we’ll barbecue en-masse. Then Dh and I try to get a city break and a more catered holiday at an hotel somewhere hot where it’s more ‘luxury’ in terms of restaurants, maid service etc etc.

We are really poor planners, very poor planners,so vacationing isn’t much fun.
And my husband doesn’t care enough to help. And all he wants is a good motel and cable.

We have a lake house and we spend a lot of time there, so some of our vacation time is spent going to the same place over and over. We have lots of company (especially in the summer) so both my husband and I do a lot of cooking and cleaning, but we love it.
We both love to travel and go new places. We love to go to Europe, but we also love traveling around the United States. We're not the types who like to relax. We love to go and see the sights. We generally eat out on vacation, but we tend to go to very casual places.

It depends. Local holidays in new Zealand, I'd either be visiting friends and staying with them or staying somewhere like a motel so we'd do a mixture of cooking and eating out. Most recent overseas travel has again been to see friends (in the US and Canada) and family in the UK and Europe so it would mostly be staying with people but maybe a week or two in a hotel or apartment.

We are doers and explorers. We are not relaxers. I can relax at home. I’m not going to pay money to relax somewhere else.
My idea of an amazing vacation is going to NYC, seeing every museum, famous building, special exhibit, and Broadway show we can. Then I’ll come home and rest for a week to recover.
I don’t “cook” on vacation.
Where we like to go to the beach we stay in a house or an apartment and there aren’t many restaurants. So, we bring food, but it’s nothing anyone has to cook. Just stuff everyone can assemble for themselves.
In general, we go to big cities to see all the famous things. We live Disney and Universal. We like the beach.
We have no desire to cruise. We don’t like all inclusive resort type things. We don’t particularly care about food. We don’t care about the hotel/pool. We don’t like to do things we can do at home.

I really like to be outdoors. My favorite vacations are camping in new places, or visiting ones that are special to us. I don't do any of the cooking, he does all that (men, open fire, etc lol). We also like to explore little places nearby so we don't eat just camping food, though that would be ok with me. I also have a weird thing for buying souvenir hoodies or pajama pants with the location printed on them. I like the hunt, and I spend most of my life in casual wear. I don't enjoy spending money on hotels and I would rather be in a tent to be honest. Although I'm planning to actually stay in a hotel for my anniversary this year--I'd rather be outside on a beach or in a forest!

I should clarify.
I said we like the beach.
We like big Texas beaches where we are the only people as far as the eye can see. If there’s anyone within a football field of us, we need to move. We don’t like resort beaches.

When we travel as a family, I prefer either an AI in Mexico or a cruise, so DS17 can run around and do whatever he wants.
When it's just the 2 of us, our travel typically revolves around SOs love of fly fishing or Formula 1. Fortunately, both of those things are in great places. He prefers salt water fishing, so we usually go Mexico, Central, and South America. I have a pretty stressful job, so I don't want to lift a finger while I'm on vacation. Last year, we went to a private island near Roatan where we had someone cook for us everyday. It was pure heaven.
When we visit SOs parents for Christmas, we'll usually take the next week to drive to New Mexico for skiing. I'm good for a day or two of skiing though, and then I'm done. We spend the rest of the time touring around finding something good to eat!
DS goes with his dad every year after Christmas for a big snowboarding trip.

Our travel has changed as my parents got older. It is harder to plan in advance. When my dad was living, it got to a point where even travel insurance would not do me any good. He has so many preexisting conditions that I couldn't count on insurance to pay if we had to cancel a trip. We have gotten out of the habit of traveling to new locations.
For the first 20 years of our relationship, we used to fly somewhere different to both of us every 2 years. We would stay a week-10 days on a couple of the trips, rent a car and travel around usually to national parks. We ate out most of our meals. I spent months planning these trips which also included a lot of museums and gardens. In the alternate years we would do a trip we could drive to rather than fly to save money. Every year we also went to Hilton Head for a more relaxing trip for 5-7 days.
Now most of our vacationing is at Hilton Head which is driving distance away from home in case something would happen with Mother that we needed to return quickly. We stay in a condo, have breakfast and dinner in the condo and usually eat out for lunch. I have cooked on these trips before but the last few years we've eaten out most of our meals because the restaurant choices are so much better than what we have here at home. We take our bikes, walk on the beach, visit art galleries, eat good food and just relax.

Travel is my number 1 passion. I want to see the world! Had I know about it back then I would have taken a gap year and traveled through Europe before college. I'd never heard of a gap year back then so I missed it. I've been trying to make up for it ever since. So far I've been to 13 countries outside the USA in my life but I want to see so much more. As a family we haven't been on a vacation in 10 years. DH is usually working or doesn't want to take the time off work. Before this we'd go to St. John USVI (twice) or Maine (3 times). We like beach vacations. Finally 2 years ago I decided to go by myself. I went with my Mom to Poland and then stayed 2 extra weeks by myself in Germany traveling around exploring various towns and cities. That was the best vacation of my life. Next year I'm planning on going to Thailand. My sister spends 4 months of the year there every year and she's invited me to join her next year. Not for the full 4 months but I think I'll stay about a month. Me personally? I like going to various countries and exploring the culture with my Nikon DSLR. In Thailand I'll have time to do that and time for the beach (mostly snorkeling). I do not like cruises at all or all inclusive vacations. With cruises you only get a few hours to explore each port and with all inclusive vacations everything is so generic and "cleaned up" that you could be almost anywhere. In Jamaica they were even raking the beach! I like nature, exotic locations, beautiful small cities (like in Germany and Austria), history, meeting new people, "blue" tropical water that I can snorkel in and see the incredible sea life, and seeing more of our incredibly diverse world. Trying to think of a beach I've been on that isn't raked (US or otherwise) whether it is an all-inclusive or not. Gotta get all that sea weed off of the beach so people will swim in the water.

No cook, different places!
90% of our vacations are ones I plan extensively 10% of our vacations are cruises, all-inclusives, etc.
I also prefer cultural activities vs lying on the beach. If we do go on a beach vacation (which isn't often), I will allow 1 day of doing nothing on the beach at most.
We travel a LOT outside of work. It's a big priority for us.

My DD went to school on Cape Cod and since then, we like to go back every Summer. We stop and get some breakfast foods and snacks along with the other things needed for the beach house. We will usually have breakfast and then go out for a late lunch/early dinner. If we are spending the day at the beach, we will pack a lunch and snacks. We stop for ice cream a lot.
My DD loves Disney and we usually go to Disneyland once a year as well. She knows that I am good for 2 meals a day and all the water you can drink. We usually have a bigger breakfast than normal and then a late lunch/early dinner. Any snacks are on the individual. I load a gift card with $20 a day and give it to the individual. When it is gone, it is gone.
We also travel to a different city each year. We have done Washington DC, Seattle, San Diego, San Francisco, Denver, New York, etc. Again, we like to have breakfast in our room so we can spend more trying different restaurants. We take snack foods with us or will stop to get some.
I am a no cook person and with the exception of beach clothes/towels, a no laundry person. However, I will admit that this last Summer I did our laundry the last evening because it was raining and it was wonderful to arrive home without a mountain of laundry.

We love to travel and have done a lot of it in the past 41 years. I want a new place every time. There are so many places I still want to see, so no time for repeats! I prefer to visit a city with museums, great shops and restaurants. DH prefers the mountains. We are trying to relax more on our vacations, but tend to need a vacation from our vacation by the time we get home. I like to be busy and see as much as possible because most likely we won't return again.
No cooking while on vacation. We also don't like to stay at rentals or AirBnB. My idea of camping is a hotel without room service! These days we tend to stay at 4 or 5 star hotels if they are available. A great lobby/public area is high priority for us as we like to sit down there and people watch as we have drinks. I do all of our travel planning and really enjoy the research portion of the planning. We haven't done a cruise yet but are considering one in the next year or two. DH will only consider it if it is one of the smaller ships (less than 1,000 passengers), so I am researching those now.

It really varies. Dh grew up spending every single vacation going to his grandparents house in Knoxville, where I grew up traveling around the country in an RV for a couple weeks each summer. We still go to TN about 4 out of every 5 years but we don't stay with his family, instead we get either a hotel or a cabin in Gatlinburg. Regardless if we have a kitchen or not I don't cook (let's be real, I barely cook at home, I'm not doing it on vacation) we prefer to explore the local restaurants (not chains if we can help it). We've gone to Disney World 4 times (about every 4 years) and we get the Deluxe Dining plan when we do (dh loves the food and is willing to tolerate the people/craziness for it; I'm willing to tolerate being stuffed to get the craziness ), we stay onsite and go all out. We've done beach vacations, that's where we get the closest to cooking......snacks and cold cut sandwiches for lunch. I'd love to do a cruise but dh has less than zero interest

We cruise 1 yr and all inclusive the next... we live in West Texas so we also do "weekend" away to San Antonio Austin Dallas or hill country... we are sports and theater people.... and my husband runs half marathon 10k or 5ks around the state... we haven't been a whole lot around the US... we should.. just don't I would love all-inclusive recs! I am trying to plan a trip for my inlaws 50th in 2020. And we are 18 - 8 adults and 10 kids (2-15). I'm having a hard time finding things that fit everything everyone wants!

So growing up we always went to Yosemite for the 4th of July for 4-6 days. And then went on a big vacation every couple of years - Europe, Hawaii. Since we didn't go every year it was a vacation, no cooking, all eating out. So that is what I was used to.
DH's family went on 1-2 vacations a year, always at timeshares, cooking all but maybe one meal on the trip. They are the people that pack lunch to take to the ski lodge when skiing. 10
Now every other year we go to Cabo with his family - 18 of us (8 adults, 10 kids). We are there for 17 days and maybe eat out 3-4 meals. Drives me insane. With that many people someone is at the grocery store every day and cooking for 18 people in a house that isn't yours isn't fun. And then we do 1-4 weeks in Colorado with dh's family too. Either staying at one of his sisters or at the family's mountain house. Cooking and cleaning with all of that.
Dh has learned that I need at least a week of my type of vacation a year to balance the time with his family. We have 4 little kids, so we have been doing Disneyland a bunch. We are doing WDW for the first time in April and already have started the process to also book Feb 2020.
Right now I am trying to plan a 50th anniversary trip for his parents and all the families in August 2020. We have talked about it numerous times over the last couple of years. They took all of us to an all-inclusive in Hawaii for their 40th, so we (dh and I) feel like it is on the kids this time to take them somewhere. Plus they pick up a good bit of the tab in Cabo too. But his sisters are both claiming they are broke and don't think they can even pay for their families, let alone chipping in for his parents. But they are both doing massive, expensive kitchen remodels right now. So we'll probably be picking up most of the tab, but that means we (I) get to pick where we go! We will probably also stay an extra week, cause it will be our 15 anniversary and I'm going to need a week to recover from the time with his family!

We travel a lot of different ways. Sometimes we travel to the closest city (a few hours drive) and stay for a weekend. Those aren't my favorite, they're usually more out of necessity because we need something we can't get in our town. Usually if we are planning a vacation, it will be 2 weeks at one or two places (ex: Big Island, Maui; or Paris, Nice). We stay at a place with a kitchen, and yes we do cook some meals, depending on where we're going we'll usually eat out less meals than we cook. We have some dietary restrictions and honestly I don't hate cooking and neither does my husband so it's not really a chore.
Sometimes we'll tag along on work trips with each other, those are usually hotel-based so no cooking. We will also sometimes plan a very spur of the moment trip (anywhere between 2 days and a week before we leave) and if it's a shorter trip it will be hotel style, no cooking.
The one thing I did think about from that other thread is that I don't really consider it a vacation if I have to drive to it. I hate driving, it gives me a lot of anxiety, and if we drive there, we have to drive back, which pretty much erases any relaxation I might have gotten on the vacation.

For us it’s a mix of things. We mostly go to our lake cabin on the weekends spring through fall but we occasionally will go on what I call a “real” vacation every couple years. Sometimes we are able to tag along with friends that have several timeshares for a long weekend, those are usually snowmobiling trips which don’t interest me a whole lot but I go just to get away. I don’t have a problem with doing breakfast or lunch on vacation but I don’t want to get stuck on Still Mom But Away From Home Duty the whole time. That’s BS.
We’re heading off on a real vacation soon which will be an 8 day Disney Cruise in the Caribbean followed by three days going to the Disney parks and staying at a resort on property. This is way more vacation than we typically do and way more money than we usually spend, but DH wanted to do something special because it’s also our 30th anniversary this year so it’s go big or go home. Yes, we will have DD along. But unlike last time, this time she is old enough to go to the kid’s clubs some of the time. We also have friends traveling with us (DD’s adopted grands) which makes it more fun.
Later this year we have a second cruise planned where we’re going to Alaska which was also on both of our bucket lists (seeing Alaska, it just so happened to also be a cruise). After the Alaska cruise we’re planning to stay a couple days with extended family in the Seattle area since that’s where our trip departs from. We’ll already be there and flights from here to Seattle are crazy expensive so we’re making the most of it. Again, taking two big trips in the same year is not something we have ever done.
Since our cabin reno project is going to end up setting us back considerably more than we expected due to the damage our contractor found in December, we probably won’t be taking another real vacation for a long, long, long time. Maybe not ever again. We booked these trips a year ago before we knew what was going to happen with the cabin and they’re already paid for, otherwise if we would have known then what we know now it’s very likely we wouldn’t be going.
DH has traveled internationally when he was younger and I have no real desire to go overseas. But I do want to check off all 50 states before I kick the bucket.

We travel twice a year, during March Break for one week and during the summer for two weeks. We generally go someplace new each time (though we have made multiple trips to Disney World).
For me, I am completely and utterly exhausted when I get home if I've done it right. I try to cram as much into my time away as possible. As our kids have gotten older, we have traveled further from home and gotten more exotic, but we've always tried to mix it up and incorporate a variety of activities and settings into each trip.
Our last trip was to China in 2018. While there, we crossed two parks off our Every Disney Park bucket list, visited the Great Wall and Terra Cotta Warriors, ate a ton of street food and shopped at local markets, went to a panda research base and an acrobat show, hiked the rice terraces, and did a rafting trip down the Li River amongst the karst mountains. It was a great mix of fun, nature, history, big cities, culture, and food. I will do a cooking lesson for fun, but I'm not cooking for the family! I have no problem picking up some ready to eat groceries though, like for a picnic in a park.
We leave for Morocco in two weeks and I can't wait! The weeks we travel as a family are my absolute favourite weeks of the year.

Food wise: Whether driving or flying, I like eating out or picking up take out and bringing it back to where I am staying. I am a picky eater, and want what I want. I don't mind driving to go get it.
I like to pick up muffins for the morning. A small package of tea bags and a small box of sugar, for my hot tea.
I am not a fan of microwaved tea, so I will bring my electric tea kettle if driving, or use I will heat the water for tea in the the coffee maker.
Vacation wise: I do not like a strict itinerary. I don't mind one or two scheduled things, like a show or tour of someplace. I prefer to have a list of things I would like to do(generally, I will make a list in order of priority) then do things at my own pace. I don't like feeling like I have rush or hurry.
Edited to add:I like a mix of go to new places, as well as return to old favorites. If I didn't care for someplace the first time, I would not re-visit that place.
I love traveling alone. Going at my own pace, seeing what I want to see. Stopping (or going) when I want to. Especially on one day or two day road trips.

As far as I know the beaches in St. John USVI aren't raked. There is hardly any seaweed in the water. They are naturally gorgeous and since most of the island (2/3 is National Park) is protected they stay clean-fines for leaving trash etc. The sand is made from the jaws of parrot fish and there is coral under the water instead of a lot of seaweed or sea grass. I guess it depends on where the beaches are and what is under the water.

We try to go abroad every year - mainly to beauty-type places, but recently discovered a love for Montreal. When we travel, we eat good (so no cooking from me. We like to Cruise, but we are open to flying somewhere. We hardly ever drive. Now that the boys are both about to be gone, I expect we will do more short trips that are in driving distance.
One weekend a year we go and stay in a cabin on a lake and take the boat and jet skis out. But other than that, no camping/wilderness for me.
When we travel, very rarely do we have a set schedule. We like to roam. I may have a list of things that I think we would like, but really we like waking up and seeing where the day takes us.
DH and I each usually take one trip a year with our guy/girlfriends.

We don't have one single type of vacation we do - though in general we do active, exploring vacations and not sit on the beach vacations.
The only places we go to year after year are places that are only a few hours away - we go to Yosemite and Mendocino at least a few times per year. We also go to Southern California probably once per year. Other than that we do a couple 'new' vacations each year.
In general: - Not a big fan of all inclusives and big resorts or cruises - Prefer going places where we can walk a lot, hike a lot or otherwise explore whether it's a city or national park - Need to have really good, regional food - Not so into museums, much prefer to be outside exploring - We often prioritize visiting national parks - We are a family of 5 so we usually stay in houses/condos - Cooking: I like to have a kitchen so we can fix our own breakfast and lunch but we usually eat out at least a meal a day - Right now we are in college mode (a highschool Junior and Senior) so we have been having fun going all over the US looking at schools and exploring new cities. - My DH turns 50 this summer and we plan to basically spend the summer traveling -- which I will also do when I turn 50....

Sort of a s/o on the earlier thread about vacationing in Vegas with the kids for an anniversary. How do you like to vacation? Same place year after year? What types of places do you like to visit? Cook or no cook? I’m definitely a no cook. We will do breakfast in the room, but I do not want to cook. DS started college this past year and we have done more short getaways. I have enjoyed those. It’s fun going somewhere not too far away and doing something different. We have done the all-inclusive thing a few times and I like that also. We are in the process of planning a few big trips and I enjoy the planning part. I think I just really like to travel. It doesn’t stress me out to plan or to be away from home. I know some people would just rather stay home, but there’s too many places I still haven’t been. What at kind of vacationer are you? We typically rent a house on an Atlantic coast beach somewhere for a week. We are on the beach all day, return and shower, and go out to eat. Except for minimal food prep, and even though I've come to enjoy cooking, I do not believe a vacation and cooking are compatible. This seems to be the kind of vacation that DH and I are on the same page about, but DS finds more than a couple of hours a little tedious. The past few years, we've focused on getting a house close enough to the beach that he can walk back when he gets bored. Last summer, we did a west coast trip with DS since it was our last year together before he went away to school. It was a nearly two-week trip. I loved parts of it but I think it was too much togetherness for 3 introverts, and it made me realize how much the pain from my chronic hip bursitis really impacts my enjoyment of walking around and sightseeing.

My family would be bored to death just sitting on a beach for a week. We prefer trips where we can see the sights. We enjoy seeing the history, museums and architecture of the city we are visiting. We also enjoy Disney theme parks. I don't mind visiting a place more than once. Especially with a large city, it's hard to see it all in one vacation. But I would not want to go to the same place over and over again every year.
I like to stay at a hotel that allows us to do our laundry. This helps us to pack light. But I don't want to cook every day. I do that at home and would like a break from that while on vacation.
