Sort of a s/o on the earlier thread about vacationing in Vegas with the kids for an anniversary. How do you like to vacation? Same place year after year? What types of places do you like to visit? Cook or no cook?
I’m definitely a no cook. We will do breakfast in the room, but I do not want to cook. DS started college this past year and we have done more short getaways. I have enjoyed those. It’s fun going somewhere not too far away and doing something different. We have done the all-inclusive thing a few times and I like that also. We are in the process of planning a few big trips and I enjoy the planning part.
I think I just really like to travel. It doesn’t stress me out to plan or to be away from home. I know some people would just rather stay home, but there’s too many places I still haven’t been.
What at kind of vacationer are you?

We do cook a LITTLE, like a couple of breakfasts/lunches, and make a sandwich, or two, but certainly not every meal. We like to visit new places, but if that doesn't work out for some reason, we will go to Seaside, FL as our standby. We like beaches AND mountains, but usually go beach.
We don't have kids, but if we did, I would not be taking them on our anniversary trip. I would have a different family trip some other time during the year.

I love to travel.. we do all types, cruises, rent an rv and camping long distances (did the whole southern island of new zealand last year), on our own at airbnb, traveling around london on own, organized small groups.. I don't mind putting together breakfast, grab a picnic for lunch, whatever. when camping, we make super simple meals and call it good. we did a camping trip around the southwest in may a couple of years ago.. flew into vegas, bought gas for the stove and went off for a week all over. rained and snowed a lot, but we are hardy campers.. and have been doing it all our lives.
I really want to do more backpacking in the northwest.. maybe summer after next when I retire.
we have lived in asia and are comfortable traveling overseas. we are not fans of resorts or beach trips. we tend to go to historic sites and museums and art museums...

I like city breaks and being on the go, visiting museums and churches. I love the sea but I'm not a beach holiday person.
I don't cook at home so there's no way in the world I'm cooking when I'm away.

We take one Caribbean vacation with an all-inclusive. Then we take some other shorter trips through the year (always one or two to Vegas) and then to somewhere closer. I am not opposed to going to the grocery store to pick up groceries and have breakfast/lunch at the room/rental. We almost always have dinner out. As long as I get one great all-inclusive vacation, I am up for being more flexible for the other vacations. I wouldn't want to go somewhere where I was cooking 2-3 meals a day though.

Many different ways.
When we go with his extended family, usually a couple of times a year, we will often rent a cabin at a state park or similar area, Schlitterbahn, something like that. We spend most time doing things around the park like swimming and hiking. And look for something special to do in the surrounding area. Every family typically brings one dinner meal, bring your own breakfast, and lunch, if MIL doesn’t bring lunch. Depending how out in the middle of no where we are, we might eat a meal or two out. There are 14 kids aged 1-17 so this works really well for us and we spend most of our time relaxing and talking.
With DH our most frequently trips are to his triathlons, once a month for 9 - 10 months of the year, so we drive with his gear. Stay at sponsoring hotels, try and do something local the day before the race. We do eat out, our rule is no chains local to us, and we research and look for local favorites. Sometimes a really nice meal, and the best brunch/lunch in town after his races.
Our other trips recently have been in state, and we drive because DH has issues flying and prefers it. But we stay in nice hotels, eat at wonderful restaurants and typically go see a show or sporting event.
We haven’t had a real vacation in years. For those we go all out. Fly for sure, explore the city, see shows/events, excellent food.

Vacation=no cooking! Most of our trips are to cities, and we stay in hotels, so cooking is pretty much out whether we wanted to cook or not. I like visiting urban areas, walking around, going to museums, eating local foods, taking in the atmosphere. It is what we do mostly now that the kids are out of the house. If we do go to a cabin (once in a blue moon), then we would probably cook. We used to go to the lake with a couple of friends for water skiing, jet skiing, etc.

We cruise, do beach vacations and vacations in France.
We rent an apartment in Paris and we do cook a bit. We normally have lunches and a few dinners out during a week. But we’ll cook 2 or 3 dinners. We like getting getting food from the markets and having a simple meal in after having been out all day.
On our beach vacation we cook 75% of our meals in. Mostly because we are at the beach all day and then just veg at night. But it’s simple meals like grilled meats/veg. We will go out a couple of times, either for lunch or dinner.
For some place like Vegas or Chicago we eat out every meal. But those would just be long weekend trips so nothing so long that you feel like you want to stay in.
I will say, however, that it’s simple meals for just me and DH and we both shop, cook and clean up. So it’s not like Mom taking care of everything/everyone from start to finish.

I like city vacations, I am so not a beach person. Fortunately, DH isn’t either, so we haven’t been at the beach for years. Both DH and the kids like skiing, so I usually have to suffer through two trips to the mountains each year. Sigh. Give me museums and historical sites, and I’m a happy bunny.

I really don’t have one specific vacation style. I love to explore a new city and see the sights and I’m also perfectly happy relaxing at a beach house for a week. NO COOKING, though. Part of a great vacation, to me, is trying out new restaurants and cuisines.

We make sure to stay places where breakfast is included and usually an early evening happy hour with wine and appetizers is also included with the room fee. I am not cooking on vacation! We do take an annual trip with friends in a cabin in the mountains and each couple/person is responsible for a meal or two, but I don't consider it a vacation because there's cooking and too many people around to truly relax.
I can do just about anything, I like to be on the move sight seeing and going to museums, but I can easily lay on a beach chair and lounge with a book for a few days. It all depends on the location. My husband and I are planning a trip to Switzerland soon so that will be an active sight seeing vacation rather than relaxing. We like to have a rough guideline of what we want to do with a few pre-planned/booked activities but also free time to be a little spontaneous. I have been on trips with such rigid time lines that it really isn't that fun, I like having the option to be more free in my time.

We are beach vacationers, and Hawaii is someplace we travel to frequently (but never the exact same place -- different islands, different parts of the same island, etc.) We also mix it up and travel elsewhere -- to Europe, to Asia, and to the Caribbean.
Definitely no cooking on vacation. We will grab breakfast and snack items from the store to keep in the room, and we might heat up something in the microwave, but no actual cooking. We haven't done a cruise (I am a very hands on planner and like to do what I want when I want). We haven't been to an all inclusive resort yet either but we will later this year because we are vacationing with other people who chose the AI.

We do several different kinds of vacations - if we rent a condo/house on the beach we eat b'fast and lunch in the condo and go out for dinner. DH likes to go to lunch a couple of times, but I don't like to drag my butt off the beach, get cleaned up, go eat, and then hit the beach again. DH will be nice and bring me something if I don't want what's in the condo. (We don't do many of that kind of trip since we moved to FL, a beach is only a few miles away). We do some short 2-3 day trips, hotels and restaurants. We take the grands to WDW when they come down yearly. We are going to Key West late next month for 10 days. Youngest DD's brother in law is getting married there. Groom's side rented a house that sleeps 10, plus a guest cottage on the grounds that sleeps 4. We'll be doing a combination of cooking and restaurants, plenty of cooks to share the work. Cruising is my favorite vacation, I just might be addicted. We just took cruise #25 a couple of weeks ago. Best way to get away IMHO. No cooking, no cleaning, designated driver, go to sleep and wake up in another country. What's not to love?

I prefer to visit a new place for each vacation. After spending the first 15 years married life using all my vacation to visit in laws there is nothing left to do or see in Nashville. We still visit family but I don’t use all my PTO to sit around someone else’s house doing the same thing I do at home.
I’m also now allergic to the sun so beach vacations are out.

how I actually vacation or how i would prefer to vacation?
DH likes road trips so we usually take one every 2-3 years - I don't cook on vacation and DH doesn't cook at all so we eat out - we usually stay at hotels where breakfast is included and lunch may involve picking up subs at Publix or something similar but dinner will be out for sure.
I like to travel but I prefer to fly rather than spend half my vacation in a car (I don't drive, I have a tendency towards motion sickness so I can't read or do anything and interstates are boring). I would love to go overseas and just wander around a new city checking out museums, historic sites, eating local food, and just experiencing a new place. DH HATES to fly and has NO interest in cruising - which also appeals to me.

We typically don't cook on vacations. I want to see somewhere new when I travel. DH has mobility issues, so we usually cruise, but sometimes we take short trips to cities that are a short hop on an airplane. We did a long weekend in DC last year, a short weekend in Chicago once. That sort of thing. Traveling is my favorite thing.

I am dying to see the world! However, the older I get the more I hate people. So I'm just cuddling my dog these days.
We're planning a trip to Ireland next year, and weren't going to make a fuss this year. However with all the snow, I need to go someplace warm. So I have to don my big girl britches and deal with people. In that case we'd probably do yogurt or cereal in the morning that type thing.
When we go to Ireland I do foresee myself cooking at all!

What's a vacation? Seriously, my vacation usually involves painting...it seems we never have money to go anywhere so I just take my vacation time when I feel like repainting a room. I find it relaxing...a beach would be so much nicer. A city would be fun. Italy is on my bucket list. Until then, I will road trip to Lake Michigan periodically and just enjoy the sand and waves.

We tend to go to the same places. Until a few years ago we couldn't afford to do much other than long weekends that we could drive to. Now we can do more but I hate to fly and flying is expensive. And dd isn't interested in some things we are. Hopefully one day we can do some things just the two of us. Though they will involve flying, yuck. I want to go overseas at least once.
We rent condos usually if it's more than a night or two while on the road. We do this as we like more space and for dd to have her own room. However I do NOT cook other than simple breakfasts and snacks for the most part. I don't want to spend time cooking and cleaning up afterwards, plus we just plain like to eat out.
We do like to do things other than sitting around. Even when we go to Hilton Head, we spend time visiting sites, checking out things in Savannah etc. We do go to the beach but only for a few hours a day.
We are going to Disney next month. I LOVE planning Disney. I just made our first fast passes this morning.

We love to travel and the farther away the better! Our last 2 family trips have been to Italy and Paris. For spring break we are headed to NYC. We like walking and it is not unusual to hit 10 or 12 miles a day. We love history and visiting museums or historical sites. We love local food but don't go out of our way to eat at ultra fancy or expensive places. That said, Hawaii is one of my all time favorite places and is the best place for me to slow down and relax. :-)
Forgot to answer the cooking part. No cooking at all unless we are in Hawaii. Cooking in Hawaii is usually cutting up a Costco roasted chicken and throwing together a bagged salad or making sandwiches for the beach. If we want to go out for a meal we will do that too.

We generally travel to see something. Sometimes those are vacations and sometimes they are trips. We like to visit museums, historic sites, battlefields, do walking tours--generally see the sights.
But we aren't the "lay on the beach" kind of people. If we are near water, we generally will include one day for the beach, but it's usually getting lunch and wandering the shops. When the kids were little it was sandcastles and digging a hole as deep as we could. We like to be doing things.
Twice a year we visit family. I do not consider these vacations. I still have to cook and clean, but in someone else's house and on someone else's schedule. It's no ones fault, it's just the way it is. (well, maybe DH because I'm beginning to think he will NEVER retire from the military.)
My favorite accommodations when traveling is to have a kitchen, sitting area, and a bedroom. So AirBnBs, extended stay hotels, and cottages are how we usually book our nights. We usually get up and get going, so it's nice to be able to do cold cereal or bagels without going to a restaurant. Quick and we are out the door. If I need to make dinner, I usually do a lot of precooking at home and just assemble or heat things up. I have a lot of food sensitivities and it's really hard to find a restaurant that I trust to keep my food from being contaminated, so I just eat the same thing over and over. I pretty much just eat burgers, fries, and seafood when we travel because there is usually a dedicated fryer for fries, a steamer for the seafood, and a spot on the grill can be cleaned well enough and the heat is high enough that I've never reacted.

Travel is my number 1 passion. I want to see the world! Had I know about it back then I would have taken a gap year and traveled through Europe before college. I'd never heard of a gap year back then so I missed it. I've been trying to make up for it ever since. So far I've been to 13 countries outside the USA in my life but I want to see so much more. As a family we haven't been on a vacation in 10 years. DH is usually working or doesn't want to take the time off work. Before this we'd go to St. John USVI (twice) or Maine (3 times). We like beach vacations. Finally 2 years ago I decided to go by myself. I went with my Mom to Poland and then stayed 2 extra weeks by myself in Germany traveling around exploring various towns and cities. That was the best vacation of my life. Next year I'm planning on going to Thailand. My sister spends 4 months of the year there every year and she's invited me to join her next year. Not for the full 4 months but I think I'll stay about a month. Me personally? I like going to various countries and exploring the culture with my Nikon DSLR. In Thailand I'll have time to do that and time for the beach (mostly snorkeling). I do not like cruises at all or all inclusive vacations. With cruises you only get a few hours to explore each port and with all inclusive vacations everything is so generic and "cleaned up" that you could be almost anywhere. In Jamaica they were even raking the beach! I like nature, exotic locations, beautiful small cities (like in Germany and Austria), history, meeting new people, "blue" tropical water that I can snorkel in and see the incredible sea life, and seeing more of our incredibly diverse world.

We love to travel. I think our travel style tends to go in spurts. I don't like vacations to be stressful. I like to go do and see but have to enjoy the pace. Some days that is packed and the next day we might go to a coffee shop and bookstore for several hours. I like vacations to be what we find nourishing and meaningful. We like to get away with our kids 1-2 times a year and we like to get away without our kids 1-2 times a year. For the most part we eat breakfast in, lunch out and dinner mostly out but if we are tired from the day we will eat something easy back at our rental.
We vacationed to Destin once a year for 5-6 years. It was a great fit for our family at that time, we love the ocean and it was a trip that we could leave early in the morning and we would be pulling in at sunset. I would cook about 75% of the meals and that worked well for us.
We went to a family camp a couple hours away for 11 years. 6 days, each July and it was one of the best choices we ever made. We had family time, couple time and other campers became dear friends that we would gather with each July.
For a few years we would go on a cruise when it was just us and we left our kids with my mom. We can drive down to Galveston the same day and its a carefree way to escape. I could easily book something for our port days and didn't have to think about much else. We haven't done that in years but for a few years it was an inexpensive and easy escape. We ended up wanting a change from some of the typical ports and flew out to LA to do a CA coastal cruise. I had never been to CA and we thought it would be a great way to get a taste of CA without driving and still getting some of the things we loved about cruising. We did a few of those and it was such a nice change and intro to CA.
We did a couple of Disney cruises with our kids and loved those. We went a 2nd time earlier than we had planned so our middle son could take part in the teen program prior to turning 18.
We have been on a California kick for the last 4-5 years. We love the weather, food, people, nature and so many things to do. Santa Barbara, San Diego, San Fran, Carmel, San Simeon, SLO, Cambria & Big Sur have been our favorites. I may be forgetting a few areas but thats what comes to mind. We usually do a day trip or two if we are there for 5-7 days and venture out an hour or two away for a change of pace.
We may venture to Seattle and Oregon this year or next. We prefer to visit a place with just us before deciding if we think it is a great fit for a family vacation. We aren't into road trips. Southwest is our favorite airline and American next in line.

The only time I cook is if we stay in a condo. In that case, I like to make a few breakfast casseroles on the first night for us to eat during the stay. Lunch and dinner are usually on the run.
I like vacations with specific activities - theme parks, shows, concerts, etc. I'm not likely to book a condo at the beach or in the mountains.
Half of the fun of a trip is in the planning.

I like to go places where there are a number of things to do and see, I like to be warm and have lots of good food choices, I like taking time to just relax with movies or a pool or whatever, and I do not cook or clean on vacation, so I specifically don’t want a kitchen on vacation. We go the same place sometimes and different places sometimes, but I am done with cooking and cleaning on vacation so that is my line in the sand.
Last vacation I picked a warm destination and found a hotel with an amazing pool and that’s all we did, eat and pool. This year we are going to London and that will be a lot of exploring, very different vacation.

It’s pretty in the mountains but if I was told I could never ski again, I wouldn’t shed many tears. Currently planning my 50th bday trip to Hawaii. Bday is actually in 2 years so planning in this case means dreaming! However I would lime to go to a resort and do some tours. For that trip I want others to do the work for me.

We are not huge vacationers. Our two main things now that the kids are grown are Vegas and the Oregon coast. Vegas is no cooking. The Oregon vacation we have dh’s family’s condo and we mostly eat out but I bring some things that are simple just so we can be so lazy to not even go eat. Lol I’ll bring a crock pot and have pulled pork - just super easy stuff. Probably ends up being 70% eating out, 30% “cooking.”

We go to the same place/beach every year for Spring Break and 4th of July. We always have a kitchen, so I cook quick breakfasts, we usually do sandwiches for lunch and then eat out for dinner.
Every couple of years, or when we can afford it, we do something different/bigger. This year it’s a 7 day caribbean cruise. Last year we went to Disney over 4th of July along with our normal beach trip. Hoping to go to San Francisco/DisneyLand by 2021.
We do small road trips too. We did Niagara Falls last year and Gatlinburg this year. We also do camping trips too.
We always take the kids and always try to stick to a pretty good budget. Sometimes we splurge (like Disney last year, that was a total spur of the moment splurge). But most times we stick to the plan.
I love to travel too. I’ll go anywhere. I’ll drive long distances and stay for a short time, if it means I get to go. I always love seeing something new and try to do so at least once a year. We are lucky, and get the opportunity to vacation at least twice a year. Even if it’s to the same place, it’s worth it for us.
