Does anyone know where the three dots/embellishments in a row on cards originated?

I think in home design there is a rule to “ place things in threes”. Maybe from there?

My understanding, which very well could be mistaken, is that it's derived from the rule of three. (In other words, three is important, but I don't know that the row itself is special.) But sometimes my three embellishments will be like two in a bottom corner and one up in the opposite corner, just depending on how the rest of the card is balanced, although that might be more "visual triangle."

I think in home design there is a rule to “ place things in threes”. Maybe from there? I heard it from an artist! She also said to place any combo of odd numbers as it holds more interest.

It's probably derived from composition 'laws', which are more like best practices. Intersection of thirds, diagonals that lead to points of interest, opposing colours/shapes, dramatic lighting & contrast, the golden ratio, etc. There's a ton of videos and books on the subject if you're curious about learning more, just look for 'rules of art composition'.
