We have a less than one year old Bosch dishwasher (SHX878) and my DH insists on running hot water before staring it. The point of contention is that it takes a while in the colder months before the hot water comes to the sink so he is running water from 3 to 5 minutes straight at full blast.
He said the installer told him that was necessary to wash with hot water. He says there isn't any heating element in the dishwasher (which is true, but based on what I can find online, the Boschs have a "heating coil system" that isn't really visible. What I can make out from the manual, the washer detects the temperature of the water source and will heat as necessary so what I think that means is that it will have to process for a bit to heat the water.
Is the waste of the water down the drain (and the pure annoyance factor to me) worth saving some time on the cycle processing (some electricity but not sure how to quantify it)? To me that is a BIG NO. I hate wasting water and look at it as a precious resource.
Am I just out of touch, and most people run the water till hot???

I am saying this sincerely but I have never heard this before. We have water rationing in the summer and are told when we can and cannot do laundry and shower etc. I know not to waste water but I would not be running the hot water to heat up the dishwasher.

Our dishwasher is almost 20 years old, and if we don't run hot water first, it washes with cold. I think it might be broken...

I do. I was told that it makes the dishwasher more efficient. Instead of letting the water go down the drain, you could run it in a pitcher or bucket and use it for cleaning, watering plants, etc.
It only take 1 minute for my water to get hot.

I do. My tankless hot water heater is at the other side of our house and it takes about 2-3 gallons before the warm/hot water gets to the kitchen. But I fill a bucket and take it out to water plants or flush the toilet or fill up the bird bath/fountain.
I'm in California, and due to all the years of drought for us to "catch" the water before washing dishes or showering is second nature.

I have a Bosch that is 10 or so years old. I was told to let water heat up. I have a bucket that catches the water, and I use it to water my plants.

Yes, when I remember. I think it’s because the water is already hot from the water heater so the dishwasher doesn’t have to heat water to start the washing process. I guess it’s supposed to be more efficient.

Can you collect the water and use it for other purposes?

I would never bother with that. The dishwasher hearts up the water just fine on its own. It's designed to do that. It has to heat it up anyway, no way does the water get that hot just in the faucet. Pointless waste of water, I agree.

I would not waste water like that on purpose - it’s so wasteful. Usually the water is hot anyway bc I have been rinsing dishes and washing pots.

Also I keep a bucket by my shower - when I run the water before a shower I catch it and use it to flush the toilet or water plants on the deck

When buying our first dishwasher, not a Bosch, the installer told us to run the water until hot.
We have a Bosch now & the installer said nothing regarding running hot water.

I run hot water first but my dishwasher doesn't have the ability to heat up cold water. The heating element only heats about 20 degrees.
I catch the water I run in a dishpan or pitcher and use if for other purposes. It is clean water.

I have a Bosch dishwasher and have never done that. My kitchen sink is the furtherest from the hot water heater in my house of any faucet and it takes a couple of minutes to get hot water. I also only use the Quick cycle and have never had any issues with the dishes being clean.

I have always run the hot water before turning on the dishwasher, especially in this house. It takes forever for the hot water to get to the kitchen.

We have a basic whirlpool dishwasher and yes we run the kitchen faucet till it is hot. 99% of the time I am having to get the water hot to wash sink dishes (hand wash items), so the dishwasher is ran at the same time. It doesn't take long for the water to get hot. Under a minute

Yes. Mine does not have a heating element for heating the water, nor one for drying the dishes.
I collect the water for the dog water bowls and the bird baths outside. In the summer I water outdoor plants.

Yes but I'm usually doing a few handwashed dishes at the same time so I'm heating it up for that anyway. I have a Bosch and if I open it up immediately after washing, it's good and hot anyway, so I don't really think the temperature of the water when it is started is the key feature of how clean the dishes get. It's how they are loaded, how the sprayer works, and if they are rinsed ahead of time. My clothes that I wash in cold or cool water don't get any less clean than those washed in hot so why would my dishes be any different?
Honestly though, I'm not catching water in a bucket to flush the toilet. I don't care if my dishes get washed with cold or hot water if it comes to that.

The steam that comes out when I open the dishwasher is very hot - I don't need sterile but I want good hot water and 'suds' on my food equipment. |

The steam that comes out when I open the dishwasher is very hot - I don't need sterile but I want good hot water and 'suds' on my food equipment. Well it's a good thing then that my dishwasher is hot and steamy even when I open it to unload it even if I haven't run hot water in the sink before. It does not have a heater for drying and it does have a sanitize feature so I assume that it does a fine job heating the water sufficiently. No one has died at my house and I'm pretty sure that dishes that aren't washed in scalding hot water aren't the most unhygienic thing my kids have put in their mouths over the course of their lives. |

It was just that you then said that you didn't mind if they were washed in hot or cold water that threw me. |
