I do. We have an older GE dishwasher and I want to make sure the water is as hot as possible when the wash cycle starts. Our dishwasher does not have every many selections to customize the the cycle. There are only 2 of us, so I only run the dishwasher about once a week. I hand wash my pots and pans and silverware, it’s takes several days to fill up the dishwasher.

I do. Our plumber told us to. I can’t remember his exact reason, but he had one. Something about the dishwasher is more effective and efficient starting with hot vs, cold water that it has to heat up.

Always. My old house plumbing takes hot water forever to get to my kitchen. The first cycle would be all cold water if I didn't. I don't want to use the "hot start" option, because that takes more energy to heat that water.

I would never bother with that. The dishwasher hearts up the water just fine on its own. It's designed to do that. It has to heat it up anyway, no way does the water get that hot just in the faucet. Pointless waste of water, I agree. ![:yeahthat:](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/yrGoHMAelQz8f2Qt0sjb.jpg) Never even crossed my mind to do that. I wouldn't waste the water. When you hit start on our dishwasher the sensor light goes on and nothing else happens for about 30 to 60 seconds I am assuming that the water is heating during this time

I do.
I was told it extends the life of the dishwasher. Not sure if it’s true.

I don't and we have a Bosch. Also, we had droughts so water is precious. The dishwasher does a spectacular job on the Vitamix carafe so I am not even tempted.

I did when I had a dishwasher, but the water I ran went into the filtered water pitcher or pet dishes, etc., not just down the drain.

I have a Bosch and yes the manual says to run hot water before starting. Do I - no. It takes too long to get hot water in the kitchen- unless I have just used the washer. My dishes come out clean.
Now when I get the circulating system installed, then I will be sure the water is hot before running the dishwasher.

No, but we use the timer feature on our dishwasher to run it while we are sleeping. Our dishes are always clean, so I would t think of changing things up.

Yes, it was recommended in the instructions to run hot water for one minute. Agreed! It was in the directions of my dishwasher.

Yes, I always run the hot water before starting the dishwasher.
I also soak dishes in hot, soapy water as needed and run the hot water before I hand wash dishes.

I've never heard such a thing so I just looked through the owner's manual. It is not mentioned to run hot water prior to starting the cycle.

I had a plumber come out to fix our garbage disposal a couple of years ago. He suggested running the kitchen faucet until the water turned hot for a few moments before turning on the dishwasher. That way there would already be hot water in the line and all the water to hit the dishes would be hot. I do it when I remember to, which is not all the time. But it doesn’t take very long for our water to get super hot. Like, less than 30 seconds. 3-5 minutes of running water seems really long to me.

Yes, 3 to 5 minutes. Our house is about 28 years old and it takes forever to get hot water anywhere other than the laundry room. The hot water heater is down the stairs in our garage so it has to travel up and out. Very annoying situation in the winter. When I am in the farthest bathroom and need to wash my hands, the water is so ice cold that it stings the skin. Next house I guess I will make sure the kitchen is right next to the garage or indoor water heater!!!!
My DH also runs the water while he brushes his teeth and while he flosses (at least a 4 to 6 minute situation). He "needs" to rinse off the floss after each tooth. Quite special!!

I do, but not with the intention of helping the dishwasher. I just use hot water to wash off the stove and counters before I start the dishwasher so it just happens that way.

I’m of no help. I’ve never used a dishwasher despite having one. Can you collect the water and use it for other purposes? The dishwasher actually saves a lot more water than hand washing if saving water is something that is important to you. Rob tends to hand wash a lot, but he’s switched to the dishwasher after learning how much more efficient it is.

Yes, because it's recommended in the manual. It doesn't take very long to get hot water to the sink, though, except in the dead of winter. I usually wash my hands while the water's warming up-- I've just put a bunch of dirty dishes in my dishwasher, so they can use it.
