Curious how others feel. Maybe I'm having a cranky day!
I am tired of being asked for more at the end of my transaction in retail shops. Would I like to buy a tote bag to support ...., would you like a bottle of water to support ...., would you like to round up to the next dollar to support charity...... the list of "would you like fries with that" goes on. These are department stores, fashion chain stores etc.
I pay taxes, I support charity. Yes, I can just say no thank you but I feel guilty for not supporting their cause (but really how many tote bags does one want to own?). I just want to but my goods and move on. I love online shopping more and more.

I am tired of that too.
And I am getting very tired of all the conspicuous consumption/ waste.
Mounds upon mounds of cherries at $7/pound and nobody is buying them. So much food and junk food. And soda , candy , snacks.
So much food that goes into the dumpster.

It is annoying. But I find it happening online too. :/ It’s just like the constant tipping expectations.

I dislike it too but I don't feel guilty saying no when they ask if I want to donate to support their charities. I support what charities I choose and those I have researched ahead of time. I have no idea what the charities are like that they want me to donate to, so I don't feel bad saying no.
As far as being asked-I worked retail back in high school during the summers so I figure the people asking have no say in whether or not they ask-they are being forced to by management. I'm sure they hate asking as much as we hate hearing it. So I give them a smile and say, "No thank you" as nicely as I can.

I just had this rant inside my head earlier today as I took my daughter summer clothes shopping. The customer service is atrocious. (And I don't actually blame the staff - I'm sure the training is poor, the working conditions are bad and the pay is pitiful.) I don't want to have to decline to give my email and phone number every single time I shop. No, I don't want to join the rewards program. No, I don't want to smell your store perform. No, I don't want the perk dollars good between 11 pm and 2 am on July 3rd for this orange t-shirt at 30% off. If I could never set foot inside a mall again, I'd be a happy woman.

What ticks me off more is they collect for the donations and then say they gave X dollars to X charity. Hey, the people gave X too? Grrr!

I'm on the bench with you! And don't forget all the reward and store credit cards on top of the donations. My biggest gripe is how all this stuff makes the check-out line slower. Just ring up my crap so I can be on my way!
I think I read here that stores who ask for donations turn around and receive the tax right off for themselves. So now it's a no thank you from me with zero guilt.

Totally agreed! The part that really drives me batty isn't just what snyder points out, but the fact that the company gets the tax benefits of the donation, too! That isn't why I donate in the slightest, but a commercial enterprise should not be benefitting from my charitable contribution. I contribute plenty - heck, I already work what is essentially a full time job on a volunteer basis for a charity I strongly believe in - but the company shouldn't get the tax writeoff or social benefit or whatever from my donation!

There is a jerk at this one store I shop at that tries to upsell me everything in the place. I look at him dead in the eye and ask him “did you misunderstand me when I said stop?” And he gets butt hurt when I tell him this. I am moving to a different neighbourhood and don’t have to shop at that store any longer. It’s M&M Meatshop for other Canadians.

I don't feel guilty saying no, because I wonder what kind of tax write-off that business receives by the consumer's donation, rounding up, etc. I'll support charities on my own, and feel no guilt saying no.

I completely agree! I just say, "Not today," every single time. This is how I handle it too. I just politely say, “No thanks, not today.” It doesn’t mean I *never* will, it just means it ain’t happening today. About the only store based thing we actually donate money to are the bell ringers from the Salvation Army at Christmas, and of course only if I have actual cash in my purse which isn’t always a given.

I don't mind the rounding up but the rest of the requests I decline. It has gotten to be too much though it is only a small reason of why I'd rather shop online than in chains or big box stores.

I don't like being asked, would like to apply for the credit card, every single time. No thank you.
Clerk: Really? because you could save $24 on your purchase today. 1) If I wanted a card, I would have already applied. 2) I personally save more by not having the card, because I spend less when I pay cash. I spend way more if I am sliding a card. So acting like I am missing out on saving a little bit that particular day means nothing to me. My bigger picture shows me saving hundreds by not having a card.

Me too. I am also tired of being stopped while I’m shopping with people asking who my cable provider is, who my phone carrier is, if I want to redo my kitchen, how old is my air conditioning system. Leave me alone already. If I want something I will come and find you.

I hate the would you like to add $1 for x charity, too.
The rounding up one was eye opening to me. Our local co-op does it. They pick a new charity every month. Our church's free lunch program received it twice, for $25k each time! I was astounded how much money they raise through rounding up.

The issue is at the corporate level and if more people would complain about having credit, donations and all that other stuff pushed at checkout maybe it would stop.

I'll add to this, shopping at Kohl's and playing their game with the coupons and $10 for every $50 you spend (or whatever it is for the week).. Last time I shopped there, the '$10 dollars off is now $10 off when you spend $25'!!! Now you can't just use the $10 how you want, you have to spend $25. (Maybe that isn't every week, I don't know)... But then you have to play that other percentage game... the coupon in the mail to see if you get 15, 20 or 30% off... and guess who forgets the damn thing. I HATE their game...

It’s one of the reasons I like self check out but I’ve noticed that even then you get a pop up on the screen that asks if you want to donate to XYZ.

I completely agree with so many replies! The constant charity requests, credit card sign up speeches, and gimmicks just make me so tired. Couple that with the lack of customer service and poor selection that stores have and I just simply don't feel the need to go into a store more than a couple times a year. Every time I do I remember why I shop online!
My pet peeve is when you do finally find an employee and ask them if they have a certain item in stock and they reply "No, but you can order that online!" like they're doing me some kind of favor by introducing me to the internet. Trust me, retail clerk, if I wanted to order the item online I am well aware of how to do so and wouldn't be standing in the store. Me too. I am also tired of being stopped while I’m shopping with people asking who my cable provider is, who my phone carrier is, if I want to redo my kitchen, how old is my air conditioning system. Leave me alone already. If I want something I will come and find you. Hate this too! I've just started telling everyone "oh sorry I live in an apartment, can't have a dish!" or "I rent my home" while I'm walking away. I actually own my home but it's the easiest way I've found of getting them to stop talking.

I’ve stopped feeling guilty. I just say not today and move on. Nobody ever gives me grief for saying no, and there’s never been pressure to do so beyond the initial ask.
What really bugs me is the pressure to open a store credit card. Because that one does come with a spiel and pressure. I can’t stand that.

No. People have been complaining to corporate about this for decades. Both customers and employees. Corporate doesn’t care, because on their end it makes sense. People donate, and open charge cards, both of which makes them money. And it is solidly about the money.
