--Here is the odd question of the day...
Sea Scallops are the flesh of a mollusk. Question: When one opens the mollusk, is the flesh edge scalloped? Is that how it gets its name? When sold in the grocery store, the meat is little round lumps....
Inquiring minds and all..........

You eat the muscle-y bit that holds the snotty bit to the shell. The scallop name refers to the shape of the shell.

Scallop refers to the very distinctive shape of the shell - which is, in fact, scalloped.

My guess is that the grocery store ones are actually skate and not shellfish at all Okay, well that sounds illegal. Frequently fish are swapped out for close relatives or another type. It's crazy. AND it's not illegal apparently.

Okay, well that sounds illegal. Frequently fish are swapped out for close relatives or another type. It's crazy. AND it's not illegal apparently. Much of it IS illegal - like Skate for Scallop would be - but very hard to prove as a consumer. Some states are more determined than others to test for and enforce mislabeling laws when it comes to seafood.

It is supposed to be labeled as the correct product but consumers are at risk of course if it’s not easily identifiable.
