Wow, I just read this. It sounds like Germany in the 30’s. I have not seen anything like this. Yes. And I don’t want to misrepresent anything - but these checkpoints have been in south Texas for a long time. They pre-date Trump by quite a bit. Yikes. That is scary.

He has a travel visa claiming Mexican citizenship that's been used 53 times, so of course it's not ridiculous to see the possibility exists that he would have claimed Mexican citizenship. Yes, we all know about the visa which prompted the questioning. It’s in the same news articles we’re all reading. It doesn’t change the fact that Galicia had proven his American citizenship with US-issued documents and the gov’t’s official Notice to Appear itself clearly states Galicia represented himself as a US citizen. Once again, that’s the gov’t – Dept of Homeland Security – stating that. Galicia did NOT say he was a Mexican citizen. I'm simply stating that with all the contradicting documents and contradicting claims and actions from him that I can see it's possible. That's it. Just that it's possible. Even his lawyer is quoted saying it added to the suspicion and reason for detaining him. Does the Notice to Appear give the details of what point in time he represented himself as a US citizen? Is it possible he didn't admit that until he was there for a long period of time?

The checkpoints I’m talking about, and the one at which this young man was detained, aren’t even border crossings. They are literally “show me your papers” places well inside the Texas border. Some are permanent stations and some are random pop-ups, but none of them involve leaving the country, so why would anyone carry a passport? My point is that if you’re white at these stations, they pretty much just wave you through. If you’re brown, apparently, they ask for extensive documentation of your citizenship. Inside the United States, no border involved. Wow, I just read this. It sounds like Germany in the 30’s. I have not seen anything like this. It's been there since the 40s

Checkpoints along the southern border have been around for decades. They're located within 100 miles of the border. The US vs Martinez-Fuentes in 1976 affirmed they were not a violation of the 4th Amendment. There are actually FEWER checkpoints now as more resources have been allocated to the border. The ones north of San Diego County are also weigh stations. Trucks have to stop and get weighed.

Incredible. I cannot imagine it. It’s still creepy, though.

I have only been to Texas once, and nowhere near the border. It sounds so strange, but I guess that Texans are used to it.

The inspection/weigh stations on the I5 (San Onofre) and I15 (Rainbow) are operated by CHP and are on both the north and southbound sides of the highway. The CPB stations (I5 San Clemente and I15 Rainbow) are right next to the CHP stations and on the northbound side only. The CPB station on the I8 (Pine Valley) is on the westbound side only. For the first 4 years I was driving this route regularly, it was rarely manned - maybe once in 3 year? - and I was waved through without coming to a full stop. In the last 18 months, I've been stopped and asked about my citizenship every time.

I went through both the I5 and I15 CBP stations about 4 times in the past two months and they were not manned. Flew through at speed limit. All of those times were on weekends, so maybe they are more lax on the weekend.

My blue eyed, blonde, freckled daughter was stopped near El Paso... Not a border crossing. I don’t know the whole story, but she gave them her drivers license (not TX) and she spent almost an hour answering questions. Like 5 minutes actively and a bunch of waiting around. It eventually occurred to her (22? At the time) to show them her military dependant ID card. About 30 minutes later she was back in her rental car continuing her road trip. Granted.. she wasn’t traveling with someone here illegally and there wasn’t room for any conflicting info, but, yeah, not clear sailing even for a glowing white girl with a Midwest drivers license and a US military dependent card. If this young man got flustered trying to say the “right thing” or what he thought was right, I could totally see the confusion. Either way, being a US citizen shouldn’t be that hard to prove and he should have been along his way. Unfortunately this isn’t something that people are always honest about and the fact so many people are here illegally just exacerbates the problem. If these folks were here for asylum, they’d have not been stopped so far from borders. Dishonest people come in all skin tones. I have never experienced anything remotely like this, so I hope that you won’t mind if I’m curious. Who stopped her, and why did they stop her? What reason-if any-was given? She was driving in an unfamiliar area (her dad was temporarily stationed at Ft Bliss and she had gone to participate in an important ceremony, was only there for 6 hours total) at night and found herself near the border on her way home. She felt she'd gone the wrong direction and didn't want to cross the border since she did not have her passport with her. So she did a u-turn (probably normally a ill advised move.. but still) and within about a minute she was being pulled over. She said it wasn't immediate, but she was still trying to get her bearings when she saw the local cops lights and a border control vehicle right behind it. The local guy took off immediately, and she said neither of them really gave her a reason. We all assume it was the u-turn near the border. ETA: she was about 30 miles from the border but thought she was closer. Also, at the time (2 years ago) her state did not issue licenses to undocumented people. They do now.

You learn something new every day. That is one thing we don’t have to deal with in Ohio.

If you stop your car anywhere near a border check point here in SoCal the border police will be at your side in minutes! My friend had a flat tire just before a checkpoint and he pulled over. Almost immediately a couple of border cars were there checking out the situation. They assume you may be dumping off/or picking up illegals that are trying to avoid the checkpoint. And after they knew he just had a flat, they left. Didn’t even help him. Lol!
