I've never had a touch screen laptop and have no desire to have one it's time to purchase a new one. It seems to me that 90% of them are touchscreen. Can I just ignore it and use the keyboard or should I jump on the bandwagon and two months from now say..."wow, why didn't I do this sooner". I do a lot of typing of text so for me, it's just easier to keep my fingers on the keyboard. While I'm asking, I insist on a Dell, 15.5 screen or thereabouts, lightweight and fairly fast processing skills and won't break the bank. What are your suggestions?

I don't think all are. The one I got last summer is not. The one my DH got just prior to mine is. He does not use the touch, he uses the keyboard.
For suggestions, I can't help. I just put in my criteria on Best Buy and looked for a sale. I figure at this point, one is not better than the other. Unless you get an Alienware. Those do seem to be the Cadillac of laptops but dang!, they are pricey and heavy. Or at least the one my ODS has is.

Mine is, and 99.9% of the time I just ignore it. The other .1% is when I try to remove a cat hair from the screen and accidentally scroll. Not a big deal.

I didn't want a touch screen but all the laptops I liked only came with them. I just ignore it.

I have a new dell. It has a touch screen. I HATE IT. I ignore it as much as possible. There might be a way to turn it off, but I haven’t had a chance to explore that yet. It is only an issue if I am trying to wipe away a spot or fuzz ball. Then things go crazy.

I find that if you are, ahem, of a certain age, the touch screen is useful for enlarging text on the screen. Just like the smartphones.

There are times I prefer my iPad over my laptop because it has a touch screen. Using my phone so much I find myself often wanting to touch the screen of my laptop.

Both of my kids have newer laptops and they are specifically not touch screens. There's a lot of problems with the touch screens and they avoided them. DD just bought a new laptop last month and she got the G3 15 laptop for under $1,000. It is a gaming laptop, so you may not need one with as fast of a processor. But if you keep files, movies, a lot of photos, or music on your laptop, yet the larger hard drive.
She bought hers from the dell website and we had excellent customer service when she ordered the wrong laptop and exchanged it for a different one.

Not all are, no. That being said, whenever I use my son's laptop, I'm constantly reaching for the screen to scroll up or down before I realize his isn't touchscreen.

I don’t think so. I wanted touch screen because I wasn’t sure about the current version of windows at the time and thought touch could be faster.
If I recall, it probably did cost more.

I use the touch screen mostly for scrolling - never for typing. I didn't really think I'd use it much, but then I go and touch my sons and realize that I use it more than I thought I would.

(I hate using the touchpad for moving around.) Honestly, I forget that mine IS a touchscreen, until every once in a while I point at something or go to wipe off a smudge and I'm startled when the screen moves, loL!!

I think the mouse is the big difference - my husband just bought a new laptop and didn't want a touchscreen as he always uses a mouse. I have completely converted to touchpad as I'm always picking up my laptop and moving it around and sometimes browse on the couch with no place for a mouse. For scrolling the touchscreen is better than the touchpad.

I do have one, but the only time I use the touch screen is when I want to zoom in on something. It's very rare, but I like having the option.

I use a Dell XPS for my personal computer and have a Macbook Air for my work computer. The XPS is Dell's answer to the Macbook Air, very thin and lightweight. The Dell has a touch screen and I really like it. I rarely use a mouse and I like to be able to scroll and zoom on the screen. I am constantly trying to scroll on my Macbook screen and disappointed when it doesn't work. I wanted the touchscreen for my Mac, but it wasn't available or was a big upcharge-I don't really remember.

I have a 15-inch Dell Inspiron with touch screen. I mostly ignore the touch screen. Occasionally I use it to enlarge small type, as others have said. I have been happy with it.

now say..."wow, why didn't I do this sooner". You can completely ignore the touchscreen. There is nothing there you have to do with the screen and can still do everything with the keyboard but once you have a touchscreen, you won't go back. It is so much faster to scroll, if nothing else. I'll never have another machine without touchscreen and my full keyboard as well. The thing I compromised on the last time was giving up a backlit keyboard in favor of a CD drive. I'll get the backlit keyboard next time. ETA: What is funny is that I keep trying to press options on DH's computer screen and get frustrated that nothing happens because he doesn't have a touch screen.

Not a big deal. or the dog touches it with her nose I didn't want it, but at the time I wanted the dvd player and it was the only one with a decent price point with the dvd. I use the touch screen when the stupid mouse freezes up

Apple doesn't make touch screen laptops and I'm fairly disgruntled about it.
For pc laptops, you can absolutely use the laptop without touching the screen, even if it has the touchscreen. I've had two work PCs with touchscreens so far, and I actually really like them for certain things (not typing - there is still a regular keyboard for that, but I hate PC track pads and often times navigating the operating system is easier with the touchscreen). I would suggest getting one and if you don't like it, no need to use it, but it's there in case you want it.

We just started looking at replacing my old laptop so our son has something faster to do school work on and there definitely are some without a touchscreen. My current laptop doesn't have a touchscreen which is just fine because I can't imagine needing to touch the screen, but then again mine sits on a desk most of the time. One laptop we are looking at is a flip type that can either be a normal laptop or fold into a tablet, now touchscreen on that makes a ton of sense.

If you want to enlarge without a touchscreen use the [Ctrl +] button and will enlarge the screen. [Ctrl -] to decrease..

I found a touch screen irritating. I would touch it to point out something to hubby or a friend and it cause issues. Then when it got dusty or cat hair on it, it would cause issues. PLUS one time one of my cats sat on the closed laptop and the screen broke. Because it was a touch screen, it would have cost more than the laptop itself to replace it, but I had purchased a warranty so it was free.
I purchased an Acer laptop early this summer and am really pleased with it. Dell laptops are not longer considered top notch. In fact I was unhappy with my Dell I just had and was so happy when it came time to replace it. From the first day it had problems with charging. It was constantly telling me that I did not have the right cord when it WAS the right cord. Eventually, it would not charge unless you jiggled the plug. I Googled the problem and it was a very well know problem and yet Dell never fixed it in later versions. There were other issues as well. Best Buy would not work on it and I had to send it out of town to get it worked on which meant extra long time without it.
