I've already asked about gift ideas for my BFF now I need ideas for a care package. My friend is having surgery on her spine, very high up. She has a disease and this surgery will hopefully greatly improve her life. She's had a poor quality of life for about 10 yrs now. She lives in a different state and I'm not going to be able to see her but I want her to have some love and care from me.
I know she won't be up and about for awhile so I"m thinking of comfort type of things for her. PJs, fuzzy socks, lotion, etc. I'm staying away from things with scents bec I know she's had problems with migraines and I don't want to cause one.
What would you like to receive in a care package if you were going to not be mobile for awhile??
TIA!

Magazines, because I don’t buy them.

Magazines or if she has an ipad, maybe some itunes gift cards. Also, lip balm, kleenex, facial wipes. I'm trying to think of items she may want to have close by and not have to get up to retrieve them.

I'm trying to remember what I wanted when I was recuperating - here are a few hand sanitizer and paper towels, perhaps even baby wipes an organizer bag to hold everything a smallish pillow to put under knees or other places a game card with money on it to play my computer games hard candy discs to suck on for the dry mouth from pain killers lip balm hand cream soft brush extra charging cords for my electronic devices
While I was in the hospital, I had a quilt that I brought from home to liven up the place. I really liked having it there, a bit home in such a sterile place.

I would want gummy bears. I never buy them for myself, but I love when someone gives me a package of them.

Favorite snacks Favorite treat Favorite lotion Itunes card Puzzle
I say "favorite", that way one receives what that like. Personally, I end up tossing or giving away random basket, care package type stuff because I don't care for that particular item.

I guess people just text each other if they need something but in the past a bell might have been cute.
Hope your friend makes out ok.

When I had my surgeries one of the best things I was given was a lightweight Kipling bag . I could hook it on the IV stand or wear it on the shoulder later for carrying anything valuable or things I needed to take to the bathroom . I also had a lightweight microfibre towel, a lovely fleecy blanket and a good quality eye mask and ear plugs .

A fruit basket that also has individual serving sized bottles of juice, crackers, cheese, pretzels and hard candy for dry mouth.
It can be kept by the bed and is good when you need to have some food with a medication and you just aren't able to fix anything for yourself.
I'll start sending positive vibes out for your BFF.

My brother in law just had back surgery. A neighbor bought him a large Sherpa throw blanket. He kept it on his recliner and sat on it. It was very comforting.

Maybe a nice pair of slip on slippers (which sounds redundant, but I mean ones with open backs, not ones that you maybe have to work to get up over your heel like shoes) instead of socks... I'm wondering whether she'll be able to bend to put socks on if she's having back surgery. Also, maybe a nice thermal cup of some kind-- a yeti thing or a s'well bottle or something that can be filled with water and kept at her bedside, that will keep the water nice and cool for a long time. Maybe a package or two of Olay face wipes like these. They are premoistened and unscented. Nice to be able to clean your face even if you can't get up and shower.

I’ve had surgery three times in the last three years. I already have tons of throws and fuzzy socks, nice slippers that I love, a cozy robe and a drawer full of lip balms so I wouldn’t need any of those things. I could use: iTunes gift cards for easy entertainment on my iPad. Amazon gift cards for all the things I didn’t realize I needed until I couldn’t drive to the store to go get them. I ended up needing some weird things that I found on Amazon that I wouldn’t be able to easily get locally. (Weird long loose socks to wear under my orthotic boot, I’m looking at you, LOL. The boot came with one sock. ONE. How many days do you think a person can wear the same sock inside that hot plastic and foam boot before it gets really rank? ) A big thermal tumbler that will keep my drink cold longer without sweating. A small bag with nice handles that I can keep by my chair or by my bed that I can keep all my prescriptions, OTC meds, my phone and charger, a book or magazines or my iPad and any other small things in that I might want or need to carry around with me. I made a small tote for a Disney trip years ago that has pockets on the inside and outside that’s perfect for this, and it worked great to throw over the handles of my knee walker both times I’ve had to use one to bring the stuff I needed along with me anywhere I needed to go. Gift cards for food places that deliver to my house so my DH wouldn’t have to cook all the time, since he would already be picking up extra slack for many of the things I normally do and it would give him a bit of a break.

Just give her your company! Phone and message her on a regular basis, just chat about normal, everyday things, what you've been doing etc. When you've had surgery and have limited mobility, having someone to chat to is a big boredom buster...and much better than any "stuff"

Don't laugh. The one thing I would definitely want if I knew I was going to the hospital would be a Snuggie. Hospitals are so cold and it's hard to keep warm. The blankets are thin and small. How do you put on a robe with an IV? Snuggies look like the perfect solution.

How do you put on a robe with an IV? These days most people don't have an IV for very long. I had major back surgery last year and had my IV in for less than 8 hrs. At work I discontinue most people's IV the night of, or the morning after their surgery. And it's quite easy to have a robe on with an IV in...the nurse will thread it through for you.

Thank you all for the ideas! Many of these I hadn't thought of.

Take her some ginger ale. As a nurse, I never could find any ginger ale on the unit and had to hoof it down to the kitchen to get it for my patients. It’s very soothing after surgery to drink something cold that helps settle the stomach.

Personally if I was giving a care package it would be for something once she is home - these days a lengthy stay in hospital is certainly not the norm - in and out in a couple of days.
I would be giving gift vouchers for food services so at least some meals are taken care of, a house cleaning service voucher so that chore is taken care of once or twice so it is not a worry.

I"m going to mail it to her so that it arrives before they leave (out of state) for her surgery that way she can decide if she wants the items for the hospital stay or once she's back home.

I once saw a jar (you could use anything, though) that you fill with little notes...what you love about your friend, special quotes, positive words of encouragement, etc. Your friend can open one a day or when she needs a pick me up.
