If you are fed up with MSP, you might consider buying the Stamparatus from Stampin’ Up. I am not a rep, but I think it’s a good alternative. I assume they are still selling them, despite the lawsuit.
I also love my Tim Holtz positioners. I use them the most. However, they may be getting harder to find. You do need to use them on a firm surface, preferably one that has no give to it.
Some still think their pink positioner by MSP works better for them. I have never used one, so I can’t compare, but I refuse to buy hers.
There are other options.

We R Memory Keepers has one as well, they sell them at Michaels! You can use a coupon.

I second the Stamparatus! Not a rep, just a big fan. I got one a few months ago and haven't touched my Misti since. It is so much more versatile; I have a ton of layering stamps, and the Stamparatus saves a lot of time when doing multiples. I can stick all of the layers on each of the two lids - line everything up for the first card and they are already in place for the subsequent cards. All I have to do is stamp, flip the lid, stamp and repeat until I have stamped all layers. Also because the lid can be moved up or down, it is easy to do gradient sentiments and abstract paint stripes stamps. I am going to get some replacement lids to have just incase one of them breaks in the future, and MSP has forced them to stop selling it. While the Misti was the best tool ever when I got it a couple of years ago, the Stamparatus has taken first place for me.

I've been contemplating the AliEx version of the stamping tool, but haven't made the jump. The price is certainly attractive, and it's not like there's anything complicated about two flat surfaces connected by hinges. I'd imagine theirs is acrylic, and not plexiglass, so I may just save my pennies and build one at some point. Looks like an easy afternoon project in the workshop.

I bought 2 extra lids so I have 4 in total - it's excellent for using layering stamps with, like you said. I also like the size and the fact that the sides are open so any size paper fits in it.

I looked at the Ali Express positioner out of curiosity. It looked cheaply made to me, just looking at the photo. One piece looked ever so slightly skewed. It may just be the angle that the photo was taken from, or maybe I’m just spoiled by the stamp positioners that I have. The Ali Ex version looks like junk by comparison.

I have both Tim's and the misti. I use Tim's. I can not get good images from the misti.
