This makes my heart hurt.
What has law enforcement become?

That is abhorrent. It makes me furious and sick to my stomach.
And there are still people who deny the existence of institutional racism. Unbelievable.

This makes my heart hurt. What has law enforcement become? They haven’t *become* anything. It’s always been this way.. We just hear about it now.

That is horrific! She was not a threat. He didn't ask her questions or identify himself. He just shot her in cold blood!

This is sickening. No one - NO ONE - should be shot and killed like this. It has to stop. Perceived threat is being used too often to justify lethal force. There was no reason for her to be shot.
I cannot imagine the pain, shock, horror, her nephew and other family members must be feeling.

I live in Ft Worth. Clearly the officer was in the wrong. I citizen has the right to be in their own home regardless of the time of day with the lights on and the door open.
I hate that this has happened. The article says she had a gun, but didn't say that she was carrying it. It doesn't matter. She has the right to carry a gun inside of her own home.
I'm going to have to follow this story to see what develops.

I am curious as to why the neighbors would think the lights on and the inside door opened was worthy of calling the police in the first place. The screen door was shut, it was just the inside door left open. Doesn't seem very "well check" worthy to be honest.

Thank goodness they can't "back room" it and make it go away while pretending the distraught families are just being "overly emotional". To make change, first you have to ACCEPT that there is a problem. I hope the scales continue to fall from the eyes of the white and privileged who have, for decades, denied we have a problem.

There's a video interview of him confirming to the media that he called the police non emergency line for a wellness check on her because he was worried about her. It was 2 am and he knew her grandmother, who also lives there was in hospital and she was there alone with her young nephew. He called them out of pure concern for her welfare. I feel really sorry for him. He's now feeling guilty for doing something he thought was right only to get her killed. This is just awful and horrific. I can understand why she was at the window, the police were walking round her house with flashlights without identifying themselves and according to the neighbour who had rang them, they had also parked their vehicle out of sight of the house. How was she to know that they were not intruders?

They need to address the issue of trigger happy officers.
They are trained to shoot to kill. They are afraid of being killed themselves.
Obviously, there needs to be much better training to both prepare them to recognize when to use force, and WEED OUT those who cannot use their brains correctly to tell the difference.
We’ve had this problem in Portland, Oregon, too. One mother called for help with her agitated mentally ill son. They killed him. And that’s just one.

This is horrible.
I feel for police officers...our current gun culture and the fact that so many people are carrying guns and shoot first, question later, makes their job much more difficult. But this is completely wrong and I don't understand anything that the officer did in this situation.

I'm just getting more and more mad about this. Now the police are saying that they found a gun in the residence (but not whether or not she had it on her when she was shot) and it seems like they're trying to build the "she was a threat" angle. SO WHAT??? As much as I wish guns weren't legal, they are. And if she heard a prowler in her backyard, it's entirely reasonable for her to have had her gun while checking it out. Hell, if she'd shot him - the prowler with a weapon who never identified himself as police - she could have claimed "stand your ground." (I'm sure the police would have been, "yeah, you're right, you were acting legally and within your rights, no charges will be filed." hahaahhahahahah)
This all such absolute bullshit.

What the actual hell? I don't know what protocol states, but if this is it, it's beyond messed up. (And I don't just mean the shooting part, but the prowling around without identification, etc.) And yeah, that poor neighbor. Bet he never calls the police for anything again. I bet he feels such a load of undeserved guilt.
