Are the blending brushes worth the $ and the space? I’ve just used the old TH handle and foams but was wondering if the brushes are actually better for backgrounds and object coloring. Do you just use them for the oxides or original distress?

The brushes give a softer blend than the foams. And there are no rings or lines to try to work out from using the foams. I only use them for the oxide inks. But if I ever win the lottery I may get them for my regular distress inks.
I have The Stamp Market version, medium size. I bought a pack of the PF ones last year and I like them but the "neck" part (between handle and head) seems weak. TSM version feels stronger to me. Plus if you order directly from TSM you can buy individually rather than a pack. I have one for each color family plus one each dedicated to spun sugar and tumbled glass, since they are so light. I put a label on the back of the head of each with the color family.
ETA: I know I can buy a generic pack cheaper, but I really like the medium size only. The largest one seemed too big and the smaller ones work, IMO, only for detailed stencils.

I have the TH mini ink blending tool but recently got a set of makeup brushes from Amazon to try out as blending brushes. I find them a lot easier to blend with than the TH handle - much easier to get a smooth blend without circle marks etc.

Thank you. Seems like they are worth trying.

I have the round foam tools, the Tim Holtz retractable brush, and the generic makeup brushes from Amazon that look like the Picket Fence fancy brushes ( link for multi size set). I am heavy handed and impatient so I get much better results with the brushes than the foams. If I needed a really heavy coloring I would still use the foam tool. But for stencils and softer coloring I reach for the makeup brushes. I hold them up near the head to minimize the chances of breaking the handles. The TH retractable brush is cool in theory but it sheds a bit too much and doesn't give as nice results - more lines, less smooth, harder to control the shading. I got it with a kit. I only have Oxide inks so I can't comment on using with other inks. I'd love a pretty rainbow set of brushes but I don't like ink blending enough to justify the price.

I actually like them quite a bit, more than I thought I would. I bought them after someone else at a crop let me use hers. I used them to blend out memento (dye) inks. I went with the five piece set because although larger sets were not much more expensive, I really didn't see myself using more than like 2 brushes anyway-- they don't hold onto the colors at all, so it's easy to use one brush with multiple colors.

I'm trying to dedicate one to blues and never use yellow with it after I accidentally made a green sky! But I probably don't need to - I just failed to clean the brush off when I switched colors. And the green sky was pretty cool. lol.

Walmart has a set of 3 for for $4.99 or $5.99 not sure. Dollar Tree also has some brushes. I haven’t found them in stock yet, but you can also order a case of 24 for $24, there are 3 sizes. Also not sure if you live near a Daiso, but they also have them and in 3 sizes.

Honestly, I still like the foam blenders better for backgrounds without stencils. I find the brushes kind of splotchy. I think they're good for stencils because they don't shred like the foam blenders, though.

For a softer blended background yes they are worth it if you can get them cheap. I got 10 from AliExpress for $0.99 each. Well worth it for that price.

I use the blending sponges from TH and also have the makeup brushes from Amazon. I love them. Honestly, I want the color coded ones but they're too expensive. I'm keeping an eye on Amazon as they are starting to carry different color coded ones that are very affordable. I'm waiting more for them to have more variety!

I bought the Picket Fence Studio ones and I like them. Simon Says Stamp just came out with really cute colorful ones and they are much cheaper than the rainbow ones from the other company.

Is it best to buy a set, or should I just get a few of the medium size?

I’ve tried all of the above too. I also think the PF handle seems weak. My current preference for stencils are the cheap Amazon brushes and use one for each color family. I put a piece of wasabi around the handle to identify the color. I’m curious, has anyone tried the Nuvo? They have a short handle which appeals to me. The TH blender tool is still my preference for backgrounds most of the time. The brushes are a *must* in my opinion for stencils.

If you do get the brushes, grab generic makeup ones. They're absolutely identical at a fraction of the price. Don't pay the craft tax!

Is it best to buy a set, or should I just get a few of the medium size? Personally I think I'd rather have a bunch the same size and keep them assigned to different color families. I got the mixed size set but now I keep the medium one is for blues and a small one for yellows - but that sucks if I then want to do a big yellow background. I just think it would be easier to have all mediums. If you get the cheap ones you could get a set of mediums and then a few of the tiny ones if you find you need them.

I also prefer a set of all mediums. I started out with cheap make-up brushes from Amazon. They work, but many of the brushes in the set are way too small to use. I caved (and paid the craft tax) on the Taylored Expressions brushes and love them. They make me happy just to look at them.

Walmart has a set of 3 for for $4.99 or $5.99 not sure. Has anyone tried the walmart ones? I was looking at them, but didn't bite. I love mine from WalMart. DH got them for me as a gift. I use them with my Stampin Up Inks. I am using the Dollar General and Dollar Tree ones with my Distress Inks. I love those sets too. I was only going to buy one medium size. I ended up buying different sizes. I am glad to have them in different sizes. I found I am using the small ones over the large ones most often.
I also got one off of Ebay and it is identical to the ones from Dollar Tree. I might have to mark mine with a piece of Wasabi, ROFL! I love auto correct. I wrote Altoids one time on my Shopping List and auto correct fixed it for me as sprouts, lol.
If you type in oval toothbrushes at Ebay and Ali you will get really great hits with even better prices for our blending brushes. Yes, I am not joking- oval toothbrushes. I have a two year old sense of humor I type that in occasionally to find more brushes, lol.
