What do you have? I'm trying to find an alternative for my kitchen. I definitely don't want any type of fabric. And I don't want to spend a ton of money. Does a thing even exist? In a perfect world, I would rip them out and replace with French doors!

If not fabric you can tie back, put nothing unless you want verticals which you said are out.. I hate trying to cover difficult to cover doors.
We have a large 8 foot tall by 12 foot wide door that opens all the way up to make a 12 foot wide opening. It’s made of 4 “windows” that open and fold back. Each window has it’s own fabric panel. We can open and close whichever panels we want. The door has a right hand opener and a left hand swing back, like french doors. The other 2 panels accordion fold with the left hand door..

They aren’t in my kitchen so we did go with fabric.

I don't know if this would work for you but there are a lot of styles of stick on glass film. Like these

We just moved into a new home that has sliding doors in the dining/eat in part of my open concept, kitchen, family, dining room. We did not want the verticals but opted to put up long curtains....the one's with grommets. They are easy to slide open and pull closed in the evening. So much easier to care for than verticals and inexpensive enough to change every few years if need be.

We have curtains on our sliders in the kitchen. Not sure what else there is besides curtains or verticals. 😄

I’d rather have bare windows/doors than vertical blinds. They’re heinous. I don’t have a good solution, but please, no vertical blinds!

We have vertical blinds. They are cream and so very sturdy. It wouldn't be my first choice, but we have dogs, had kids, and nothing else was practical. Several of my neighbors have curtains and they like the look but hate how impractical they are and how dirty they get.
They need make blinds that can read your mind.

Do you have to have anything? We have sliding doors in our bedroom which are bare. Are vertical blinds what they sound like? I definitely wouldn’t do those. And I wouldn’t do fabric in a kitchen. What about bamboo shades? Those always look nice.

I just replaced the sliding glass door from my kitchen to the deck. We had vertical blinds and I hated them. Now we have blinds between the glass and I love it!!
It's not a cheap alternative but it was what I wanted and it works so much better for us.

We changed from vertical to horizontal in our last house . It was only ok.
In this house we have California shutters on our sliders. I love them. We have 2 sliders that we have nothing on and 2 sliders with the California shutters.

We have pleated fabric blinds (which are vertical) for our patio door at home, and at the lake cabin we previously had a french door patio door with curtains (also fabric) that were hung with café curtain rods at the top and bottom of the windows. I much prefer our pleated fabric blinds than the icky clacky plastic vertical blinds we had at our last house that covered some large picture windows. Other than those options or a stick on or cling privacy film like THIS from Amazon, or buying the expensive patio door with the blinds enclosed between the glass, I don’t think there are too many other viable options. And FWIW, the french door style patio doors that we had/have SUCK big time. We still have the one door in the basement, but now that our construction is complete we almost never use that door as a primary entry point anymore. MIL put it in a dozen years ago when she had the original cabin lifted to add a walkout basement and DH and I have both hated that stupid door ever since. Knowing what I do now, I would never ever choose that style of door especially for a location that’s used frequently.

I had blinds on mine for years and they were a bitch to keep clean. Now I have floor to ceiling white cotton drapes. It takes about five minutes to take them down and toss in the washing machine. I hang them back up after the spin cycle (that takes another five minutes) and they dry on the rod. Never have to iron them as they dry perfectly even though they look wrinkled when I first hang them. By the time they dry they look like I have ironed them. Admittedly I have a thing for white drapes. So easy.

I HATE blinds. Just all blinds. They are always breaking, and wonky looking, and hard to clean. I'd do curtains, and then tie them back, or have a curtain holder.

I hate vertical slat blinds and replaced ours with curtains. I'm linking a previous thread for other suggestions and a side discussion on the limitations of French doors.

Well, this is pretty much what I was going to say. I don’t like blinds in general, and verticals in particular. But even more, I hate bare windows. I don’t like feeling that anyone could be looking inside at night and I wouldn’t see them. I have embroidered semi-sheers on my sliders with holdbacks so I can pull them aside when I want to let the light in and/or open the doors. They weren’t terribly expensive (BB&B), and they come down for washing.

There are nice vertical blinds out there, but they are not cheap.

I have vertical pleated shades on both my patio doors. link They slide open/closed very easily. They take up maybe 5" when opened. I love them! I hated my French door. I replaced it with a patio door. It was always in the way when it was open.

We don't have anything. But we have woods behind us and only one neighbor who could possibly see in. And we do not walk around naked downstairs either so no big deal!

I don't have them nor do I have anything on my sliding glass door. I absolutely HATE the look of those vertical blinds and if someone wants to look into my dining room, so be it.

Nothing. But we also don’t have anyone that can see in. We back up to a 12 acre wooded lot and have motion sensor lights that flood the backyard if anyone is back there (so far it’s only been an occasional critter).
