I was contacted this week to see if I was interested in being part of a study for a new medicine for hot flashes. I answered a few questions and am scheduled for a 3 hour long appointment soon- mammogram, physical, etc. After that, I'll go once a month for about a year, I'm assuming to give updates on how the treatment is going.
Part of me is having second thoughts and thinking I should back out, as I don't want to take a pill that would grow hair on my chest or something strange. But on the other hand, someone's got to be willing to participate in these studies so we can get relief from hot flashes!
Is that something you would do? Have you ever been a part of a study like that? What kind of questions should I ask at the first appointment?
TIA!

I would if I were having issues with hot flashes. I would want to know if it's a hormone based medication. I'm sure other questions would pop up to between now and then. Keep a little notebook or start a note on your phone for questions when they pop into your mind.

Isn't it possible you're going to end up with the placebo?

Isn't it possible you're going to end up with the placebo? Yes, it's possible I'd have a placebo. I'd prefer that to a hormone-based treatment, like pmm mentioned.

I would only do this type of study if it was presented to me by my doctor.
I would vet the whole thing and make sure that this was a true independent study.

I haven't has hot flashes yet, so I don't know what I am talking about, but I'm not sure I would want possible unknown side effects with this virus going around

I haven't has hot flashes yet, so I don't know what I am talking about, but I'm not sure I would want possible unknown side effects with this virus going around I agree with all of this. In normal times, I'd want to know a lot of details about the treatment so that I could decide if it was something I'd be willing to subject myself to if I did get the treatment vs. a placebo. There are plenty of medications for more significant illnesses that people choose not to take due to the side effects, so I would have to think very hard about something that was just for hot flashes. (I do recognize that saying "just" isn't completely fair since I've never had hot flashes so it could be much worse than I envision.)

I saw a blurb online several weeks ago about a study for hot flash relief and contacted them on their website. I never heard anything until a phone call the other day. I wish I could find the study site online, but it's not coming up on my google history.

Well, if you were to ask me in the middle of a hot flash, I'd be screaming hell yes! Give me anything that might help. But mine are particularly bad right now, not to mention the horrid night sweats.
Now my sensible mind would be contacting my doctor to see what they could find out about it and what their thoughts on it were.
I do hope one day there's something non hormonal that will alleviate these suckered. I don't know if everyone's are like mine, but for me, it's a personal hell.
