In New Zealand we have started screen people on flights from China today, but as symptoms can take up to 14 days to develop, I'd imagine there's still a risk of something getting through. Now there are cases in Australia I think it's only a matter of time.

That’s comforting for now. Thank you. My intent was not to alarm you at all ! Just to let you know. Proceed with caution that is all! No-I was sincere. It was comforting for today to know that I didn’t walk right passed the patient they just confirmed. I didn’t know the 2-3 day thing. I’ll continue to be vigilant if something changes but for today, it was comforting

Reported potential case here in CT, a Wesleyan student who had just returned from China. I’m really concerned about my daughters elementary school. We share a cafeteria with the HS and they eat together. At least half of their student body is from Asia, a lot of them just returned this week from Christmas break. If the little kids aren’t hot lunch they eat in their classroom so I’m considering banning DD from the cafeteria for now.

They're reporting that our case is a member of ASU Community-one of the largest Universities in the state. They did say he doesn't live in dorms but they said the diagnosing hospital released him after suspecting and testing for it but before confirming it. They report that he was in China for close to a month in Dec-Jan and was at the market where an (the?) outbreak was concentrated.

Although only one case has been confirmed in Chicago, they are testing 3 more people for the virus, per my coworker’s wife, who works for the infectious disease dept for the city.
For what it’s worth the one in Chicago sounds like its in the suburbs, as the woman is being treated in Hoffman Estates, not the city.
I feel slightly concerned given that I’m pregnant and somewhat immunocompromised because of it. Overall really glad I’m not due for another couple of months.

I’m a little freaked out. I live literally less than 2 miles from ASU campus and my pharmacy is only a block away from campus. I’m supposed to have surgery this week at St. Joe’s which is in Phoenix. Im wondering if the patient went to St Luke’s because it’s literally right down the street from campus.

We’re in an ER in Az with our son. I heard a nurse exiting another room saying “corona virus screening.” I have no context to know if she was talking about one or ordering one but it did hit hard home. Awe I’m so sorry! I’m guessing he went to St Luke’s since it’s the closest. Prayers for your little one!

The one in NoVA is rumored to be a George Mason student who just came back from break in China.

I read an article in USA Today over the weekend that suggested that the Coronavirus is not as deadly as the flu currently going around.

I will be relieved when they find out enough about the virus to let us know how long it lasts on contact surfaces, whether it is killed by disinfectants, whether hand washing is effective in reducing chances of contracting it, etc. It would be nice to know that scientists are understanding more about this virus.
(we should all be washing our hands and cleaning our kitchens and bathrooms, or course, but things like norovirus aren’t killed by regular hand washing and regular cleaning - you need bleach that sits on surface for 2+ minutes)

I have a number of friends living in China on my FB feed.
One posted a video yesterday (he lives in an apartment 588 miles from Wuhan) of the city sounding the warning sirens that mean stay inside (they sounded like our tornado sirens). He said they had been ordered to stay inside and a gvmnt agency was delivering boxes of food.
Another friend lives in Beijing and posted that school (she has a 7 yr old) has been suspended for three weeks.
I’m off to look for news stories about these things now.

I went to the doctor today for my yearly physical and when I was checking in one of the questions they asked was "Have you been to China or in any major airports in the last few weeks". 3 reported cases in my state.

I was listening to talk radio right now, (Bill Handel 640 KFI) and he's got me really worried. He's saying stock market is starting to tank because China is essentially being shut down.
I never worry about this kind of thing because of all the scares in the past but this definitely feels different. I'm scared. Ugh. I never get scared. This feels..I won't even say it.

China is essentially being shut down. This is a normal time for much of China to be closed down for the New Year celebrations. But, yes, this is different! They may close for an extended time to celebrate later, who knows!

DH had to have a procedure today at the hospital. I was joking with him that if we were in a apocalypse movie, we would be getting a virus here. Came home to "OSDH testing 2 in Oklahoma for possible coronavirus"

Me too Yvonne and I am never worried about this sort of stuff. I had a come to Jesus meeting with the kids this morning about washing their hands...I said if you are not washing your hands 5-6 times a day than you are not doing it enough!! Makes me nervous how fast this can/will spread.

It's the same with the flu...in fact more have died from the flu than the coronavirus Well, that kind of goes without saying seeing as 2019-nCoV is a new mutation that only made the jump from animals to humans in the last couple of weeks and at this point we really have no idea how it is going to affect the human population in the coming weeks and months. You can't use the comparison of the flu because no-one yet knows what we are dealing with in the longer term with this virus.

Seasonal flu also continually mutates. It does but they are relatively minor mutations and it doesn't change into a whole new virus

You are correct that many more people have died from the flu but the the coronavirus has a much higher mortality rate. I think it will be more like the spanish flu or Ebola as far as mortality rates. Very scary!

Very scary! I think those are pretty big variances between spanish flu and ebola. It looks like spanish flu had a mortality rate of <20%, ebola can be up to 90% and SARS (closer relationship) had a 14% mortality rate, if my googling is correct. Current strain appears to be well under 10% so far. Not that a 5% mortality rate on a virus with no treatment isn't scary. It's just not ebola.

So the WHO has officially declared it a Global Health Emergency now, primarily due to how effectively it can be treated and handled in poorer countries. British folk were evacuated from China last night and have been taken to a hospital to be quarantined. It must be a relief to be back in the UK at least. I was wondering though, as they all came home on one plane...what if one person was incubating the illness, wouldn't he then infect everyone else even if they were clear? I guess they'd thought of that and took precautions though And I think I heard that a vaccine is close to be produced - anyone else hear that? Think it was on the BBC news last night but I haven't searched this morning.
