Confirmed cases in France...one in Paris, which is where my family will be going in 6 weeks. Nervous too. Think how many people in airports, planes, etc were exposed to it.

My understanding was that people probably aren't contagious until they have symptoms. Has that changed now? I know that people can by asymptomatic for up to a week.

Canada - There is the first case in Toronto. From cbc.ca
Canada confirmed its first "presumptive" case of coronavirus in Toronto as the number of infections worldwide surpasses 1,900 cases.
Public health officials announced Saturday afternoon the patient — a man in his 50s who had travelled to Wuhan, China — was found at Toronto's Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.
Within a day of arriving, officials say, he became "quite ill," said Dr. Barbara Yaffe, associate chief medical officer of health with the provincial Ministry of Health.
Officials say lab results were received Saturday afternoon. The man is in stable condition.
While the case has been confirmed by a test in Toronto, officials said it has yet to complete separate testing by the National Collaborating Centre for Infectious Diseases in Winnipeg. The illness can't be officially confirmed until that testing is completed. Officials said the man took a flight on Jan. 21 from Wuhan to Guangzhou, then from Guangzhou to Toronto, arriving on Jan. 22.
He is believed to have travelled "privately" from the airport to his home. Officials do not believe he took public transit. They have not said what part of the city the man lives in.
Upon arriving, he told family members he felt ill and called 911. Officials say paramedics arrived prepared, taking all necessary precautions "right from first contact" until the hand-off to the hospital's emergency department on Jan. 23, officials say.

From cbc.caAll performances of Cirque du Soleil's first and only permanent show in China have been cancelled until further notice, citing the ongoing coronavirus outbreak in the country. "As a responsible actor, it's the thing to do," said Daniel Lamarre, the chief executive officer of Cirque du Soleil. "It's a preventative measure from the Chinese authorities and it's important to collaborate with them." * * * ** * ** * Does anyone remember a TV show from about a couple of years ago where the plot was about the City of Atlanta and they try to build a wall around the area in the city where there is an outbreak of something nasty? When I was watching the news and the barriers that the Chinese people were putting up, resembled that show. was it Hot Zone? I think on cnn or something There was also a movie called Outbreak for the marburg virus And a book from the 90s called that was about Ebola

freecharlie No, it was a show on regular net-work tv, about a cop and his girlfriend (she was a teacher) and the setting was in Atlanta. The city used old train cargo-cars and made a barrier around the part of Atlanta that was affected. No zombies or anything like that. The start of the story/series was that the girlfriend was taking her class to a hospital for a field trip and then the hospital went on lock-down. A bunch of wild stories, people getting sick, how they survived without fresh food and how people were trying to escape the locked down part of Atlanta and going to the "free zone". Probably an 8-12 week show.

My husband is going to Paris this week and I am nervous. I read an article that a lady traveled from Wushan knowing she had a fever. She took something to lower her fever so she wouldn't get stopped at the healthy screening at the airport. Then once in Paris, she traveled the city posting brags on Instagram about eating at the best restaurants and having a fever. She was tracked down and the Embassy told her to go straight to the hospital. Stupid, selfish woman put people in jeopardy. www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-51231593

I would be more concerned about the flu or the Norovirus.

From what I've read, this virus is different from SARS in that it can spread before there are symptoms. SARS generally did not spread in that time.

I was in Vietnam during the bird flu outbreak in Summer 2004. I remember going through the airport with heat registering cameras mounted everywhere looking for people with a fever.

(CNN) China's health minister Ma Xiaowei made a startling statement Sunday about the Wuhan coronavirus: He said people can spread it before they become symptomatic."This is a game changer," said Dr. William Schaffner, a longtime adviser to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It's much harder to contain a virus -- to track down a patient's contacts and quarantine them immediately -- if the patient was spreading the disease for days or weeks before they even realized they had it. "It means the infection is much more contagious than we originally thought," said Schaffner, an infectious disease specialist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. "This is worse than we anticipated." ** 'We're going to have to reevaluate our strategy' US health officials believe the Wuhan virus has an incubation period of about two weeks, according to Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, who spoke at a press briefing Friday. But as recently as Friday, health officials said they thought there wasn't much risk of transmitting the disease during this incubation period. "Based on what we know now about this virus, our concern for transmission before symptoms develop is low, so that is reassuring," Dr. Jennifer Layden, an epidemiologist with the Illinois Department of Health, said at the Friday briefing. The update from the Chinese health minister should encourage health officials to change that thinking, some infectious disease experts told CNN. "Assuming that Ma is correct, we're going to have to re-evaluate our strategy, that's for sure," Schaffner said** www.cnn.com/2020/01/26/health/coronavirus-spread-symptoms-chinese-officials/index.html

The Chinese authorities are currently building a 1000 bed hospital which should be ready for Feb 3rd! It’s only at the diggers and excavators stage but with fabricated construction should be quick and relatively cheap. I can’t imagine anything like a hospital being built that fast in the UK 😳 I wonder if the planning etc was already done or if this is entirely new! My aunt and uncle just moved, but they lived in Shanghai for about 5 years. They said that in a matter of days buildings are constructed and/or torn down. They said that there was a block with stores and shops that had been there for quite awhile. All of a sudden within a week the shops were torn down and a park was made where they were. They said it was because someone ticked off the government. Anyway, it is hard to believe that they could build a big hospital like that in a few weeks. I might be a little weary about going inside of it.

I have a lot more coming and just place a order yesterday. It's not impossible, but I think it's highly unlikely (although I am of course not an expert). Here is an article from the NHS (national health service in the UK). It says that while in the right conditions, viruses can survive for over a week outside the human body, they generally do not survive longer than 24 hours. That's true for cold, flu, and similar respiratory viruses. Considering the amount of time your package spends in transit, any virus on your dies is probably long dead upon arrival.

We’re in an ER in Az with our son. I heard a nurse exiting another room saying “corona virus screening.” I have no context to know if she was talking about one or ordering one but it did hit hard home.

Yes they announced it in our county shortly after I overheard what I heard. I’m hoping it’s just coincidence. We were walking passed the room she was exiting as she said it.
