Are you a tomato sauce base or brown gravy type? I grew up brown gravy. ..I make mine with an egg, breadcrumbs, spices, mustard, etc then make brown gravy and mashed potatoes.
DH grew up eating it with tomatoe sauce base (to me it's Like a huge meatball) so I'm not a fan of his mom's.

Neither. We put a tiny bit iof ketchup just down the center when cooking and serve with it on the side. But I've never made gravy or coated it in tomato sauce.

Applesauce! My meat mixture has chopped onion, celery, applesauce, egg, ketchup, spices. Then I put it in a pan into a ring so the center has a big hole like a doughnut. Then mix up applesauce, 1-2 tablespoon brown sugar and a bit of mustard. Pour that in the hole and bake till brown. YUMMY

We have done mostly ketchup all my life. The past few years I have been doing a combo of Heinz 57 sauce and ketchup. Last week I came up with a good mix the other night when we did stuffed peppers. it was tomato sauce, roasted garlic powder, sea salt and pepper with Parmesan cheese ( the canned kind). I mixed it together and put it on top of the filling in the bell peppers. We liked it so much that I am going to do it on the meat loaf the next time I make meat loaf. I am also going to mix some in... I usually put some shredded cheddar cheese in my meatloaf so I think it will be good with the Parmesan cheese.

I haven't made meatloaf for probably 3 or 4 years, (thanks, WeightWatchers), but after seeing this post I plan to make it very soon! Yum! My meatloaf is simply adorned with ketchup, like scrappower's.

I use my mom's recipe with ketchup. Gravy is for Salisbury Steaks. I don't like gravy on meatloaf.

Well, this is going to make me sound like a hick from the sticks...but I grew up with meatloaf covered with cream of mushroom sauce and surrounded by potatoes and carrots. Beyond that, my all time favorite Meatloaf is served with hot patooties and a side of soul blessing.

My meatloaf has a bit of ketchup in it and like scrappower we also use ketchup on the side. I've never made gravy from the drippings however and always thought they were too greasy looking to make gravy.

My mother would put the meatloaf in a casserole dish, and then cut the potatoes into quarters along with large pieces of carrots, then cover the whole thing in cream of mushroom soup. The potatoes/carrots were sort of roasted, but the cream of mushroom made something like a sauce. ETA: the potatoes and carrots are placed around the meatloaf in the casserole dish...

I make a sweet and sour sauce and pour over meatloaf the last 5 minutes of baking. My dh loves it that way.

Brown gravy, but my kids hate it so I never make it anymore. My kids like my meatloaf (well Tyler's Ultimate meatloaf) so much that my 15 yr asked for it as her birthday meal last year and my 32 yr old ds asked for the recipe But then again, my 15 yr old LOVES mushrooms and salads!

Neither,; mine's as basic as it gets: meat, onion, egg, bread crumbs, salt, pepper and a little milk, and then I spread ketchup/brown sugar mixture on top.
I cannot stand tomato-based stuff--soups, roasts, or whatever else has tomato as a base.

Never liked meatloaf when I was a kid and never made it as an adult...until I tried it at Cap City Diner in Columbus, OH. Now, I love it! I use Sweet Baby Ray's Barbecue Sauce and use beef and pork but no veal. www.food.com/recipe/cap-city-diner-meatloaf-151960Still haven't figured out how to link.

I use the recipe on the Lipton Onion Soup box, there is Catsup in the recipe. I use fresh bread crumbs rather than the dry bread crumbs called for in the recipe. I bake the meatloaf plain and serve it with brown gravy. My MIL used the same recipe but uses a can of undiluted golden mushroom soup on top of the meatloaf when she bakes it.

Leftovers are fried the next day and served gyro style
