When the US military stops canceling training and moving and holding deployments and lets members and their families start traveling freely around the globe.

Yes, trails being overcrowded has been a problem everywhere (as well as people traveling out of their region - Utah had a horrible problem with this and finally had to close down much of the parks to county residents only). Nobody knows what will happen with this virus, so we are playing it by ear and will see as the time gets closer. My husband sent in the application for the permit and it's an area that is not heavily as trafficked as other parts of the Sierras. I'm not terribly worried about crowds there because: 1) you have to have a permit to backpack, so that helps control the numbers 2) the area is more visited by backpackers, so won't be crowded with day hikers (and even if there are day hikers, once deeper into the backcountry it will be fine - we would likely do a 5-7 day trip) 3) the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada is not as visited as the western side, so fewer people anyway. It's too far from the major population centers for a day trip. 4) you don't have to camp in designated campsites. It's not hard to find campsites away from people. I keep thinking about our hike on the John Muir Trail a few years back and using that as a reference point (we hiked around 110 miles and were out for 12 days). That is one of the most visited sections of the backcountry (including Mt. Whitney) and I think with a few alterations, it wouldn't be hard to socially distance. We rarely camped by anyone else and while we passed people on the trail, the areas that had people congregating were Mt. Whitney and some of the passes - although there weren't excessive amounts of people. At any rate - who knows. Since we would drive there and be camping, the only thing we have to plan ahead for is the permit. If for some reason they aren't open, it doesn't seem wise to go, etc. it's not a big deal for us to cancel. I'm more worried about crowds where we live anyway. We live at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and I'm a little worried what is going to happen once they open the park back up. They will implement safety measures I'm sure to still comply with social distancing, etc. but I still think there are going to be a ton of people. I think you are making the right call getting the permit then play it by ear. My daughter did the Bells thinking once she was in back country, it would thin out, and it did a bit, but really just not enough. She thinks it's because so many people are out of work, and therefore have decided to take the opportunity to do things that are hard to come up with enough vacation time to do. I'm in a super dense eastern state, and it's just absolutely amazing how many people are outside right now! Even on not so nice days. As a person that is usually outside, and enjoying the quiet, it's wild to me how few people I normally would encounter and they are just everywhere right now. The number of dogs that must never be walked is astounding. As for me, spring rafting in West Virginia is near and dear to my heart, and we were so sad to miss it this year. We've talked about about a June/July time frame trip, and I'm doing the same thing you're doing, going to book it, drive 15 hours and go see. If it doesn't pan out, I'm sure we can pivot and find something to do instead. So we finished our backpack this week and it was a successful trip! We ended up going out of Sequoia National Park and it was busy in the front country, but even outdoors the majority of people were wearing masks. But we were only in that part for half a day. We spent seven days in the backcountry (for our trailhead I think they permit 20 people entering a day). We had several days where we didn't see another person and the others only a few people. It was a nice break from reality for seven days!

I need to add an addendum to my original statement.
I am happy to go as soon as it's allowed. Right now, travel within Canada is allowed, no quarantine required. Thing is, there isn't any place in Canada I want to visit, so that doesn't help.
I want to go to the USA. But there are no spectators allowed at soccer games anyway, so its moot. And right now, the Canada/US border is closed, which I am ambivalent about. I am irritated that even if I could go to the US (which, I mean, I could if I flew), I would have to quarantine for 2 weeks when I got home. And realistically, I don't mind that I would have to quarantine.... I could easily do it. But because I'm getting older, I find it easier with the wheelchair to have someone with me so I hire a friend of mine who actually is a private contract support worker for adults with disabilities.
So for her to take me on a 2 night/3 day trip, she then has to take 2 weeks off work when we get back... which then makes a hassle for her other clients.
It irritates me; it creates an extra barrier for people with disabilities.

It is not just going to disappear, it will take at least a year and quite possibly two! pray for a vaccine Please do research, study the Spanish Flu This 100%. We' re planning our next vacation to St. John USVI I'm looking at 2021 or even 2022 whenever it's safe. We always go the first 2 weeks in December (the end of low season). We've been twice before but it's been far too long since the last visit and I really want to see the coral before it all dies. DH wants to go to Germany but I told him Germany will be there-the coral won't.

We have nothing planned. I would possibly be open to a vacation in the early fall (in the US) depending on how things are looking. I was going to reply to this thread not realizing it was older and saw I already did! My feelings have changed. I am not interested in a fall vacation. Dh wants to go to Vegas but knows I’m not into it (we typically go 1-2 times a year). Besides the risk, I just don’t feel it would be fun with masks and many things different or closed. I’m not sure what would change my mind or make me feel comfortable.

We aren’t doing any of our planned activities, but we are just finishing a four day camping trip to Minnesota’s Lake Superior North Shore. A cancellation at a campground occurred and we grabbed it. Good social distancing here overall. We get some encroachers, but we either move our my body language gets them to move.
We have been able to keep things pretty safe. A lot is outdoors. Sometimes we drive by when the amount of cars is too much (Some trailheads are overfilling), but we know a lot about the area and have timed things well to avoid big crowds. Somethings aren’t open and most that we did go into had small limits and asked for masks.
Heading home today.

I feel that we can safely fly as we all have N95 masks and bathe in hand sanitizer whenever we are out. But depending on trending cases, who know if we will feel safe later. I rented the home for two days before we actually arrive, so it can be cleaned and then just sit empty for two days. Costly, but peace of mind is priceless. Covid tests are now required from "hot spot" states, but I imagine it will eventually be all states. I can't imagine the island surviving for a year or more without tourists, so they will have to require tests to be as safe as possible - never 100%. I also bought Cancel for any Reason trip insurance. So we essentially paid a decent amount more to either try to make it as safe as possible or to recoup our money should travel not happen. As you know, it's worth it!

We will have no vacation this summer. We have just visited my mil first the first time since lockdown. In her house, she has no garden, 2 m apart and wearing masks. We have a break booked for Dec. It is self catering and we will see how things go with schools returning in sept. I think masks will be part of life for a while yet. And time be honest I do not understand why it is such a big issue for people. I am stumped at people on facebook moaning about how the mask is a such a huge problem first them. I don't enjoy wearing one, nor do my kids. But we will and continue to do so to help reduce the impact of the virus. Edited to add....currently there is no way you would get me on public transport or leaving the country to go on holiday. Just don't think it is worth the risk.

We decided to skip our vacation this summer so we’re out the entire cost of our Delaware beach rental which was to have been for the last week of this month. Delaware is now on the list of quarantine states for CT and their numbers have been climbing, to where they’re now mandating masks on the beach. Don’t know when the next vacation will happen. I’m not planning anything at this point.

I'm super happy that a 2 week quarantine is a barrier for ANYONE to cross the border. It's not designed as a barrier for the disabled, it's designed to keep Canadians safe. Let me mention now that I have a member of my family in a wheelchair and I provide 24/7 care. Would I take him to the US now? Hell NO. In terms of travel, I will be travelling in Canada for the foreseeable future. I live near the US border but unless something changes in the next year or two, I won't be crossing the bridge.

We do dispersed camping so it was easy to be away from people. On the trails we met a few people, but everyone was respectful of each other. We met up with some friends and we know she has some concerns and when going inside we said we would put on a mask if she wanted us to, she did. Outside she was ok with us not wearing one, but we also stayed apart. We also planned much better this time so we only had to stop for gas and a quick bite through a drive through if needed. These are the trips we are comfortable doing now. We wanted to go a few more touristy spots, but those are on hold for now, hopefully next summer. I know some towns are looking at city wide mask ordinances and I totally get that because there are so many from out of town. I also know a few locals are not happy about it. They want they tourists, but are not understanding the risks of it. I did hear there was a little kerfluffle outside "The World's Best Donuts" so that might be a reason for a city wide mask ordinance. Takes some pressure off of businesses to have to come up with guidelines and try to enforce.

DH and I are borrowing a ski condo next weekend, small lake, kayak and some hiking trails. DD is happy as she is planning a staycation with her GF... (they had hoped for w weekend in Montreal as a grad present).... then hopefully DD and I will head to my parents in Northern Ontario at the end of the month and we are driving DD to the east coast for university at the end of the summer... hopefully the quarantine will be lifted by then and we can spend a few days DH needs to get to Northern Ireland to visit his mom, but not worth it to be quarantined the entire visit

We were in OC, MD for 2 weeks. Well, my youngest and I only stayed a week because she had pom tryouts last week. I was impressed with most people wearing masks (not at the beach though, but in stores, takeout lines). We drove to Bethany and Rehoboth boardwalks, but just walked into a couple stores (with our masks on). I didn't realize they now must wear masks on the beach. Good idea. Are you worried about so many cases or is it because of the quarantine upon return. Our state (PA) requires a quarantine for those visiting Delaware, but not Maryland.

I answered earlier but things have changed now. We missed trips th we had plans Jackson Hole and California). We canceled our second trip to Cali that was supposed to be this fall. A&M football is most likely off the table now too. We were invited to Cabo in August but turned them down. At this point, I figure it’ll be next summer before we go anywhere significant.

We just got back from vacation yesterday, and also took a long weekend two weeks ago. But they were both driving vacations, we stayed in vacation rentals, took as much of our food as possible and only ate a couple meals out (and of course wore masks, distanced, etc when we did) and spent most of our time out birding in remote areas where we didn’t see anyone.
I’m comfortable with our choices.

Hopefully we can go to Disney World next summer. I'm really hoping it will have died down by then. I'm scheduled to go to Europe in 2022- it has been planned for quite a while. I was initially disappointed that I couldn't go next summer but now I'm glad I have the extra year. I'm hoping Europe will have me by then.

I'm also still planning vacations for this summer/fall but they are all: - Driving - Staying in a cabin and cooking most of our food - Consist of outdoor activities such as hiking and kayaking I'm planning a week in August and I'm debating between the Eastern Sierra (staying in Mammoth area) or a road trip to Bend which seems riskier so it will probably be Mammoth.

We had made no plans (we’re mostly last minute travelers). But camping at the beach opened up. We considered it for a minute. Only half the spots would be open, but the bathrooms AND dump station would be closed. What exactly are we supposed to do with our literal shit? So we didn’t.

We had not made any plans for this summer although I thought about a taking the kids to Crater Lake. Most of Crater Lake is closed (boat tours/lodge) and since it is an 8 hour drive, we aren't going. We were planning to go somewhere at Christmas - either London or NYC. Luckily, we hadn't book anything yet because I don't think it will be enjoyable to travel at Christmas this year. Next summer we were supposed to go to Japan. Everything is on hold with that right now. I don't think we will make any travel plans until early 2021 and that is assuming things are much more under control and there is a vaccine available world wide.

They’re fun, and a great perspective on the lake, but the experience is not lesser-than if you can’t do a boat trip. (I’ve been there many times and have only done the boat once - it was neat but not the defining experience of being there).

I want to take the kids on the boat tour so if it isn't operating we will wait for another time. Also hoping to fit in a trip to the Oregon Caves on the same trip and they are closed too.

We had to cancel our trip to Scotland that we had planned for May.
We are headed to the beach in a couple of weeks. We will drive there in one long day. Staying in a vacation rental beach house. We will do a Walmart pickup after we arrive and cook our own meals (we may get takeout a couple of times but will not eat in a restaurant). We have been there many times and the beach is never crowded.
I think it is a fairly low risk situation. DH will go back to teaching (university) when we get back and that will increase our exposure considerably more than the vacation.

I really wanted to go to northern Minnesota this summer, but so many things popped up (Covid, new car for DS, cancer surgery for my boss the 2 weeks we could possibly go, etc.) that it didn't happen. However, if the high school football season gets cancelled before it starts we'd have a week (or more if marching band doesn't happen either) where we could go if we could find lodging...but almost everything is booked like it always is.

I work in a tourist area in Florida, which just reopened two weeks ago. 96% of our visitors are from out of state. People are.choosing to come here with our record breaking Covid numbers.
Who in their right mind would vacation in Florida right now?

In the summer, our B.C. wine country is amazing. We already went for a week and it was heavenly. We can’t wait to go back next week. I’d love the border to open when it’s safe but the medical coverage is going to be so difficult I’m not sure we‘ll be able to go.
