If this has been asked and answered I am sorry, but is there a legitimate medical reason someone would not be able to wear a mask? I do feel like I can find a reliable source online for a real answer.
Thank you.

I’ve heard people give asthma or COPD as reasons, but everyone I know with asthma doesn’t have a problem with the basic surgical masks — those are super breathable. I can understand if it were something with higher filtration like an N95 (even I have trouble breathing in those), but those light blue basic surgical masks shouldn’t be a problem.

I have what they call "severe' asthma, and I can wear a mask just fine.
I'd really be interested to know why asthma is a valid reason. I've tried finding the answer and can't find one really either.
COPD I totally get, especially if the person is on oxygen.

I also have severe asthma and masks don't affect it.

COPD I totally get, especially if the person is on oxygen. I wonder if the asthma reason is really a combination of claustrophobia and asthma. The claustrophobia and panic is what's causing the asthma attack. I imagine extreme claustrophobia could cause physical reactions that make wearing a mask problematic.

I have severe asthma and can't wear them at my job for 8+ hours. I do wear a surgical type while I shop. I still find it difficult but I don't shop for long periods either.

My BIL had covid and is now on oxygen 24/7 due to COPD-like symptoms. He wears a mask OVER the canula. No reason for someone already at very high risk of getting sick to go without a mask.

We had a guy on the local news claim his "medical" reason for not wearing a mask was because of balance issues and he needs to see his feet. I'm not sure how the mask blocked his view of his feet. I was skeptical because the guy had a belly bigger than me at nine months pregnancy and I'm pretty sure he hasn't seen his feet in years.

Is panic a reason not to wear one?
( I bought one from brave gown and can wear it. I really suggest people try those. )

I'm thinking they may have had a thicker cloth one since the paper masks were in short supply Also, the people who made triple layers plus a filter and then complained they couldn't breath.

If I am out and about and see someone inside a store without one, I just increase my distance from them.

I was also thinking of my autistic son. He cannot wear them for long periods of time. Stacy This I would totally understand and would respect. I can also understand someone with extreme claustrophobia, and some with high anxiety issues. It would not be expected to be on for 8 straights hours a day, but an hour here and there. Thank you for the responses. I have a feeling someone is making excuses, or maybe are very fearful and would rather say they can't wear a mask rather than they are just afraid. I think I will give them the benefit of doubt.

My younger son with Autism won’t wear any kind of mask with elastic, but he will wear a gaiter pulled up over his mouth and nose. There are creative ways to “mask” one’s nose and mouth if one is motivated to figure out what works for oneself.

I work with a student with some severe physical disabilities who can barely keep his glasses on (his wheelchair head support bumps them askew quite a bit). I think his mask would twist everywhere and we'd be adjusting it constantly. He's difficult to understand as it is, and having a mask on would really exacerbate that.
Our school district is exploring the possibility of having students/staff wear face shields and possibly eat with the shields on. I don't see that happening for anyone, really, but especially not this student in particular. He can self-feed but it is effortful and his movements are not precise.

I have allergies and my nose drips all day (sorry if that is TMI)... I wore one (first time in a store in 3 months yesterday) and by the time I was done shopping (a little less than an hour) I REALLY needed to take it off to wipe my nose. I'm not sure if I could wear it longer than an hour without stuffing tissues up my nostrils.
ETA: I know it's not medical. It's just super icky and annoying.

My son has chronic bloody noses, he typically heavy bleeds for 20 minutes even with bleed cease. He will wear a mask over his mouth but he can’t wear it over his nose or he starts to bleed.

I'm just saying there's something about wearing a mask that makes me feel like I can't see. Like I said, I'll have my glasses on thinking I need to go find my glasses because I can't see.

PTSD.
For us it is medical PTSD and it is real and sucks. Add that to Autism and SPD and well it is bad.
Ds can now wear a mask for 10 min.
But it is also not safe due to his already low 0xygen Sat due to pulmonary hypertension and his medical conditions.

Anyone who wears progressive lenses may have trouble wearing a mask and seeing their feet. The bottom level is for reading and close up, and it makes my feet and the floor area blurry. I have tripped over things while wearing them and not paying attention. The mask probably interferes too. I would take my glasses off temporarily to walk around.

My coworker said that her blood pressure is too high when she wears a mask. She said it was “verified when she went to the doctor”.

I'm sure there are people with legitimate medical reasons but I think there are a lot who say they can't because they don't want to wear one.

Ultimate Selfish Dickhead Syndrome except for the small percentage of valid reasons ( some mentioned here), . Can they be uncomfortable? Hell, yeah they can, especially in the heat. But a lot I've heard is just ignorant excuse making.
