I'm so sorry to hear about your DH's accident. I agree with you, it could have been a lot worse if he wasn't wearing a helmet. As an ad campaign over here said "If you don't need a head, you don't need a helmet". I hope his recovery goes smoothly.

Wow! So glad he'll be okay, even if it will take awhile.
Yes, helmets save lives. What always gets me is when I see parens riding bikes with their kids, and the kids have helmets on but the adults don't. It is the law here that anyone under 16 has to wear one, but not adults. But what is that teaching the kids?
My ds fell off his bike when he was in elementary school and hit his head. His helmet was cracked in about six pieces but the foam cushiony stuff was fine. The police resource officer from the school asked us if he could keep it to use when he did bike safety talks.

Wow! Hope your DH heals quickly. As an avid cyclist, I am always shocked when I see people riding without helmets. Especially living in Houston where it's not exactly a bike-friendly city. I was mountain biking yesterday, and there was a guy on the trails without a helmet. I think I have cracked my helmet at least 3 times on those trails just from low-hanging branches. That guy was an idiot.

That guy was an idiot. I'm an avid cyclist too. Never in a million years would I ride a trail or the road without a helmet. I've seen what happens too many times when riders slip on wet trails and hit their head on a rock or side of a tree. It is not a pretty site and could have been easily avoided. Last year I had a patient that was hit from behind on his road bike. He was wearing a helmet but was also listening to music as he rode. I gave him an earful about that. I hate when patients make me act like a nurse.

So glad he had a helmet on.
Soon after dh & I got married we witnessed a fatal hit & run between a bicyclist & a car. The car never stopped and possibly was unaware of hitting the young man. We tried to follow the car but there were so many options. We were both hypnotized but couldn't remember enough for a clear description. The young man's mom called us & thanked us, but her pain & suffering just broke my heart. He was not wearing a helmet
My friends dd was skiing over to a vending machine at the bottom of h hill when she fell, cracked her helmet & broke her nose. The dr said that she would have been in bad shape without it.

My husband thinks people are being over-cautious by making kids wear helmets, and we have had several arguments about me making our son wear one.
However, I put my foot down, and my son has worn his helmet when he rides his bike.
I'm so glad your DH was wearing a helmet. Thanks for sharing his story with us.

I'm glad your DH will be okay. We are planning on getting our little girl a bike and helmet soon. My DH is kind of "meh" on the helmet thing. I'm going to tell him about your DH's experience. He needs to know the importance of the helmet.

I am so glad his injuries were not worse!
I totally understand about the difficulties of taking care of someone. I am here if you need to vent. My Mom just about drove me insane during the 2 weeks I took care of her.

So glad things turned out the way they did. Hoping for a speedy recovery!! I cringe whenever I see bikers no wearing helmets. So dangerous!

I'm so sorry you are dealing with so much right now, but very glad your husband's injuries will heal. Between your mom, your DH, and your family gathering, don't forget to take care of yourself.
And thank you for the valuable reminder about helmets. ALL cyclists - whether regular or motor - need to be wearing helmets!

I am so glad he will be OK, but sorry for all he has to go through to get there. And yes, helmets do save lives! A college friend of mine was just in a terrible bike accident and broke his pelvis, femur and ankle. He also got a concussion and a broken nose and broken orbital bone, despite wearing a helmet. All his doctors say he almost certainly would have died from head trauma if not for the helmet. His mom just posted this x-ray of his pelvis after surgery. (Also has screws, plates, etc. in his femur and ankle.) Anyone who's unsure about helmets - if the force of a bad crash could do this to a hip, what do you think it could do to an unprotected skull. And this was a skilled rider, just commuting from work to home, not trail riding or doing anything dangerous.
