Prayers for his recovery! How scary. Great reminder. I need to show this to my son. He's a good one for "forgetting" it. And it's taken a few nasty spills in his time that the helmet saved his block head.

I hope he heals quickly!
When I was younger, I dated a guy whose mother died in a biking accident. She wasn't wearing a helmet. He was a freaking mess of a dude. He was with her when she died, so how could he be unscathed. Ugh. Since I've had my own kids, i think of her every time I want to ride my bike. If I can't find my helmet, I don't get on.

How awful for him. I wish him a speedy recovery and I thank you for sharing the story.
We insist on helmets here, but I still worry about my own DH who bikes to and from work each day in the warmer seasons.
Many good thoughts for your DH!

I'm glad he will be OK. I had a biking accident many years ago. We were riding on a bike path and the pathway ended and I didn't expect it to. My front tire got caught between the blacktop and the dirt. I fell hard. So hard that my helmet was flattened on the side. Plus I "almost" broke my thumb. I say "almost" because I had all of the pain, but not the fracture. I was all scraped up and had to ride 11 miles back to the car.
Wear your helmets!
ETA: I contacted the helmet manufacturer to thank them and tell them it helped keep my head safe and they requested I ship it to them with detail of my accident for study. Then they sent me new helmet free!

Sorry for bumping this but I have been away since last Thursday. I wanted to say thanks to SMayer for that tip. I will tell my husband to contact them.

How scary , hope he is on the road to recovery. Bike accidents can happen so easily. I'm surprised to read that so many people see people riding without helmets. I can't remember the last time I saw anyone ride without one. We can be fined here if we don't wear them. Several friends have had accidents which involved cars and would probably not be here if not for their helmets. Thanks for sharing your story, especially the details of his recovery. It brings home the reality of dealing with injuries long term.

Dh is an avid mountain bike racer and his helmet and oakley sunglasses have saved his hide a few times. He was in a race a few months before we met and was hit by another racer and he careened into a tree. Helmet saved his noggin and the glasses saved his eye. There was a nub where a branch had fallen off and it hit him square in the cheek. The glasses pushed back into his face but kept the tree from sliding up into his eye. He has a huge scar, had a broken nose and lacerations on his thigh but he was able to ride the 14 miles back to the start to get help. 20 years later, he still gets little festers where bark is coming out of his cheek.
I flipped over the handle bars of a bike when I was about 13 and got the biggest egg on my head. I'm lucky I didn't get a concussion or die. Helmets just weren't a thought back then. Today, my kids can't long board, ride bikes or use their scooters without helmets. In fact we took the long boards down to the RV this week and 2 can't find their helmets so I told them no riding.

Timely for me to read as I have thought about not wearing my helmet a time or too.
I hope your DH is feeling better.

I am so sorry that happened but thankful that he will be ok. And I will admit, I am guilty of not wearing a helmet when I ride. As a matter of fact, I don't even own one. But this post is such a great reminder to me that I have got to get one. Riding without one is so dangerous; it's stupid really. I promise I won't ride again until I get one. So, THANK YOU for the message! Miss Ang,
That actually made me tear up. Thank you for that promise!
Hey there! Just wanted to let you know that I followed through and picked up a bicycle helmet yesterday! Hoping to get out for a ride this evening! How is your husband doing?

Thinking good thoughts for a speedy recovery!
It drives me NUTS when I see people without helmets on. It is law here that under 16 needs a bike helmet - but the amount of kids I see out there without one...where are the parents??
I know DS can remove his out of my site, but he knows if I catch him, he loses the bike and has to walk to all his friends' places.

Thanks for asking, he is doing pretty good. His first dr appointment was yesterday and they have taken the sling off his shoulder which was a relief for him. He still is in the neck and back brace for another 2.5 months but at least he is able to use both arms now.
Glad you got that helmet!!

I have no brain cells left and can't remember if I responded to this already. So sorry about your hubby's accident!
My sister was in a similar biking accident six years and still has a small amount of brain damage and a little physical damage, too. We are very lucky she survived. Her helmet cracked on impact.
Best wishes to your DH for a full recovery. And you hang in there, too.
