**UPDATE** Justice comin' in hot! Did any peas happen to see this woman’s 2 Instagram reels about an alleged kidnapping attempt of her two kids? It appears her Instagram account has now been deleted. If you open the tweet in twitter there are a couple of clips but it’s not the full 15 minutes that I saw yesterday. If you saw it, what are your thoughts? My main thought was why the hell did you leave the store? http://instagr.am/p/CIzTkyyFVXr

What a bizarre story. I don’t know enough to make a judgment one way or the other. I am curious about the ethnicities of the various parties.

I saw her Instagram video yesterday. She claims that the man said something to the effect that they should steal her son (who is autistic and wasn’t wearing a mask) because his mother obviously didn’t love him enough to put a mask on him. There was nothing in her story to suggest to me that a kidnapping was about to take place in broad daylight but you could see she was terrified of some unseen danger. I feel that the Qanon conspiracy theories and that organization Our Rescue (she is a follower of theirs) have scared the living daylights out of these young, mainly Trump-supporting, mainly Christian women.

So are they charging the people or are the charges going to be against her?

Obviously I don't know the details but this sounds a lot like all those FB posts about alleged kidnapping attempts in dressing rooms or bathrooms where the vigilant mom saved the day but you should ALL BE AWARE and it always happened to so-and-so friend of a friend. Usually Target or Walmart.
So she might really think that that ring of sex traffickers headed by Oprah and Tom Hanks we hear so much about was behind a real attempt on her kids, but I'm guessing she didn't do a lot of critical thinking here.

Further to the “classic white van story” referenced by a commenter on the Instagram post, my husband was approached a couple of weeks ago by a woman while he was putting gas in his car. She came up to him and asked him what his license plate meant as he has a personalized plate. He told her what it meant and then she said she had seen naked children fleeing from a white van. His car is white. And I presume that she thought his license plate contained some sort of secret code. If you were actually this frightened or actually witnessed such things why wouldn’t you go immediately to the police?

Stranger kidnapping is so exceedingly rare. Certainly it was possible here, but I think it's more likely that she's overreacting and would not be surprised if there was some bias in her perception of danger.

I'm a little suspicious when your SM account of the incident has more information than what you reported to the police.

There was a Code Pink (abduction code?, not sure if this is a universal code) at Children's Hospital Anschutz today while we were in ortho for DS scoliosis appt. Two babies last seen in NICU on 4th and 3rd floor alerts. Lasted about 15 minutes. Not sure of the outcome. Hope all was well.

Your kids are at far greater danger of being molested by people they(you) know: coach, pastor, youth group leader, scout leader, etc. www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/04/120413100854.htm"The Petaluma Police Department’s press release says they found “insufficient evidence to establish that a crime had occurred” at the Michael’s on December 7. Sorensen, who identified two persons of interest shown in a video still included with the release, told the police that she “did not want anyone arrested but wanted to draw attention to the concerning behavior.” Katie Sorensen says strangers tried to kidnap her kids outside the Petaluma @michaelsstores after following them around inside. Her @instagram video (partial here) has hit 2M views. @petaluma_police investigating. She & @pollydad speak out to @ktvu 5:15, 6:15, 7:30 p.m. pic.twitter.com/cG0wnm2JgQ — Henry K. Lee (@henrykleektvu) December 15, 2020 You think two people tried to kidnap your kids and YOU DON'T WANT THEM ARRESTED??!?! I'd sure as S#$* want people who attempted to kidnap my kids ARRESTED, TRIED, CONVICTED. This smells off. The account given in the Instagram video, which received over two million views on Monday before Sorensen went private, includes details the police department says were not shared with them in the initial report." influence.co/nofilter/katie-sorensen-motherhoodessentials-attempted-kidnapping-video-police“Petaluma Police Department officers and detectives have subsequently conducted follow-up,” the release reads. “Inconsistencies between the two accounts of the incident need to be resolved before criminal charges can be considered.”

It's hard for me to put any stock in this story when there are inconsistencies to be resolved between the police report and the Instagram post.

UPDATE: Police have cleared the couple of all charges. Read the update here. "In a press conference on Friday afternoon, the couple accused came forward. Sadie Vega-Martinez said when she recognized herself and her husband, Eddie Martinez, in the photo being circulated by police as the suspects, she was shocked. “I couldn’t believe it. It’s like we’re literally guilty of being brown while shopping,” she said at the press conference, according to The Petaluma Argus-Courier. Vega-Martinez's daughter, Esaia Gonzalez, told BuzzFeed News her mom and stepdad are of Latino descent, and have five children between them and two grandchildren. Her stepdad works in the community as a UPS driver." www.buzzfeednews.com/article/stephaniemcneal/couple-cleared-in-katie-sorensen-caseInfluencers who use their kids to make money SUCK HUGE. And those who lie about others and accuse them of vile crimes should be put in jail themselves.

Bigotry, classism, attention whoring with a little bit of Qanon idiocy sprinkled in. Delightful.
I am so sick of idiots that know nothing about sex/human trafficking and kidnapping claiming that a (usually) dark skinned person was trolling Target for some white, suburban babies.
In this case, I think she knew she was lying or at least exaggerating but wanted the likes on Instagram. What a disgusting piece of work.

That woman's lies will follow that couple forever, though. Despite them being cleared, people will still be suspicious. It's awful and she should be ashamed and punished.

These stories often seem to be at Michael's or Hobby Lobby. Are crafters just more likely to fall for conspiracy theories and more likely to crave attention for them? Or more likely to be frequented by sheltered white women who live in fear of those not like them?

Sounds like she was trying to scam him or try to see if she could take advantage of him some way.

We lived two towns south of Petaluma (San Rafael) and it would be complete idiocy to attempt an abduction there. The 101 is the only main road in or out. There are smaller roads that lead to Napa and Sonoma, but it would be hard to get away with stuff like this in that area.

These stories often seem to be at Michael's or Hobby Lobby. Are crafters just more likely to fall for conspiracy theories and more likely to crave attention for them? Interestingly enough. I had a crazy experience at Michaels 16 years ago. I believe I posted about it on Two Peas. I brought my one year old son with me to shop for scrapbooking supplies and as I was looking at paper, I noticed a man get close to my son. At first I thought he was trying to make him laugh. Then I noticed what was really happening and I can tell you I went into complete shock. He was exposing himself to my son. He tried to get him to touch IT!!! Before I could say a word, he yelled "it is not what you think" and ran. This was before Cell phone cameras and I only had a pager at that time. I grabbed my son and bolted to the front but he was gone and I asked an employee to call the police. I have been so overprotective of my kids and aware of my surroundings in public places ever since!! So when I saw the subject of this thread...I thought the worse. .

I follow a mom on IG and she shared it. Pretty scary! Did you read the thread? The white woman imagined it, made it up, embellished it...whatever, but it didn’t happen. I’ve never heard of the woman “influencer.” I’ve always said I won’t let my kids have social media because kids have the power to use technology to ruin each other’s lives. It’s horrible that adults who should know better are wielding that power and even more disgusting that it’s done in the cloak of “PSA.”

So I saw the first Reel on IG. Someone shared it. I know there was a second but I couldn’t find it. I thought it was fishy and it seems I was right. Nothing will happen to this woman. I hate that people can act / do things like this and will face no consequences.

What a little attention whore. I feel really bad for that couple. Can you imagine trying to be friendly and find out later that someone was accusing you of a crime? Wtf

An aspiring Bay Area 'mom influencer' said her kids were almost kidnapped. Then came the backlash. www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/katie-sorensen-viral-video-kidnap-petaluma-15819497.php"“I saw these people. They didn’t look necessarily clean-cut,” she said on KTVU. “I felt uncomfortable around them, and instead of making them uncomfortable with my discomfort, I choose to remain in my discomfort."" Racist white lady translation to English: I saw some people who weren't color coordinated in this season's trendy fashions and kicky boots and hat. Because I was trying to be "woke" I didn't immediately start screaming in the store that "Your kind doesn't belong here!!" But when I got back to the car, I immediately regretted my woke-ness and realized I could also turn this into a viral video for way more followers, influence and cash! Cha-ching!!!!"
