Our governor just announced that as of March 10, masks are no longer mandated and all businesses are open at 100%.
Counties may enact mask mandates under certain circumstances, but cannot enforce them with any kind of punishment or fine.
The business openings doesn’t surprise me and honestly doesn’t feel like that big of a deal because everything has been open at 50-75% capacity since summer.
I don’t love lifting the mask order. Of course private businesses can still require masks, but this just makes it that much harder for them to get people to comply, IMO.
The timing is suspicious - I feel like he just did this to get everyone to stop talking about the energy grid.

What a foolish thing to do. I hope that he does not regret it.

I hope it's the right move and it doesn't cause a spike. I really do.

I do wish he had waited until after Spring Break.
Let’s open Six Flags at 100% capacity with no masks for Spring Break and then send everyone back to school the next week! Fabulous idea!

What is the infection/hospitalization rate like in Texas now?
I think it is too soon to go totally maskless. I wish them luck!

Yeah I don't understand why he couldn't have waited until after March, once we had a better idea as to how the variants are impacting cases. I agree that he is trying to take everyone's focus from the grid shitshow. I didn't even realize that some schools were still having spring break. The college my youngest DD goes to dumped theirs last semester. I just found out last week that some schools will still have a break. That said, I am not abandoning my masks. DD #1 works at a museum. I will be curious to see if they will still require the masks.

So short sighted.
Texas is still averaging over 7,000 new cases a day.

To make it even worse, teachers in Texas do not currently qualify for a COVID-19 vaccine unless they have underlying health conditions. But let’s send all of those unmasked kids to school after spring break to expose the teachers.
Is it too much to ask to wish Texas could go 24 hours without being an embarrassment?

I am a teacher in Texas and worry that the lifting of the mandate will give parents more ammo to fight masks in schools. Thay have already changed close contact in my district from 6 feet to 3 feet. I hope we keep mask requirements in schools at least through the end of the year.

If he HAD to do this, why not wait til after Spring Break? edited: I didnt see others are saying the same thing. Should have read through all the posts.

Ugh. That sucks.
In Tulsa ours is still in place till April 15th. I think our Mayor wants to keep it in place till we get to our cities 65% vaccinated number.

Political pressure. Trying to deflect some of the heat he’s gotten over the power debacle.
I notice he didn’t say whether schools will still be allowed to mandate masks.

Texas is #8 per capita in active cases, #7 per capital in Covid deaths, is one of 8 states at high risk level for an outbreak, and of the 20 counties in the US with the highest recent cases and we capita, 11 counties are in Texas.
Yes, this is a sound decision, Gov. Abbott. (eye roll)

Why do these “leaders” not listen to medical community? CDC just addressed the importance of not letting our guard down too soon.

Tarrant county (Fort Worth area) judge just lifted the mask requirements effective immediately.
Lifting the mask mandate when we still have so many ill and unvaccinated people here in Texas is such a slap in the face to every healthcare worker in the state.

My brother lives up in rural Wise county and he said that about 50% of people don't wear masks up there anyway and no one is enforcing anything. I live in the DFW suburbs and I'm hoping that the county will still require masks. I'm not ready to be around people without masks yet and as much as I hate wearing them, I'm going to continue on!

It has been a number of years since I have thought “damn I am glad to be from Indiana” but today I will go with that. A Republican governor who believes in science and is making sound pandemic decisions (despite getting heat from his own party 🙄), a mask mandate still in place, and what has been a very smooth vaccine rollout by all accounts. We got news today that the next eligible group is up for vaccines and at this rate DH should be able to get vaccinated this month which will relieve a lot of stress in our household. And the sun is actually shining here today, it really has been a great day so far 🤞🏻

I will say - it’s not like the mask mandate has been enforced here. My guess is that the people who have been wearing masks will keep doing so, and those who haven’t been aren’t going to start. Those who have been avoiding crowds will keep avoiding crowds.
There’s been nothing about Texas’ rules that kept anyone from doing as they pleased before so, SSDD?

Oh crap, how many other states will follow along. My Gov. (Utah) has predicted easing on masks 8 weeks after 1.4 Million have been fully vaccinated (about half the state population) We are at 700K now and did 20K vax yesterday, so, it's coming up fast. He said he thinks by July 4th we should be totally open/mask less. The Health Department disagrees. I work primarily with the elderly. They are all talking about getting or have already gotten the vax. Most of them are excited about it. There is also a growing segment showing up without masks. Generally, the late adopters are also the early abandoners. They all complain about it. But masks have been especially difficult for their demographic.

I am beyond angry right now. New variants and so so SO MANY people still trying to get vaccines.
I don't know what this will mean for school districts.
