When this happened to my sister (8 weeks, in Australia) and a friend of mine (12 weeks, in Germany), they both had D&Cs within a couple of days. To my mind, and to their doctors, there was no issue of it being an abortion, as the fetuses had no heartbeats, and so were no longer alive. As for your comment: technically a D&C is an abortion - not necessarily. Women have D&Cs for many reasons, not only the removal of a fetus. My D&C was not an abortion - I had heavy bleeding and an overgrowth of my uterine lining. That will not happen in Texas. Those are modern countries with a comprehensive healthcare system, and an understanding of science. Even if Texas’s law states - as Ireland’s did - that a non viable or dead fetus is exempt from the abortion ban, the practice is very very different. Doctors in Ireland were terrified of investigation and losing their licenses, so you could literally be carrying a dead fetus and be refused an abortion. An abortion that under law you are entitled to. So women died, other women were permanently scarred and families were broken because of it. Which was the law’s purpose: to hurt women. It’s barbaric. Correction: relatively wealthy women in Texas will get a D&C from their usual gynecologist or one referred by them, who will list the procedure as medically necessary for some other reason. Worst case, they will go out of state to get an abortion. Poor women, mostly women of color, who rely on county clinics and/or use Medicaid, will not be able to do that. They’ll end up having a back alley abortion or trying to do it themselves. Or they’ll have a child they didn’t want and/or can’t afford.

Wealthy women have wealthy friends, and a wealthy friend who snitches on her to the Abortion Informant Line or even directly to the state, will get that doctor investigated and ruined even faster than a regular doctor providing care. It won’t matter that he’s within the law, the suspicion will be enough to kill his career in Texas. How will he prove that the fetus was dead? He might have a chance before a Houston or Dallas jury, but for the most part, these people don’t accept basic biology and will convict him anyway. I don’t think you can get another medical license in any state if you’ve gone to prison for something you did medically. A wealthy woman will have to travel as well.

One of the reasons the Dr wanted to do a D&C was that: it had been 6 weeks and there hadn’t been a ‘natural’ miscarriage not any signs of uterine contractions but was running a low grade fever ( 99.9-100 ) and they were worried about infection.
So I guess during covid that woman is extra screwed as then she could not travel from Texas with a low grade fever anyway.

You have good people doing good work in all states, and writing off the south/Texas gets us exactly nowhere.

Lets be clear about one thing here. The majority of Texas voters voted to put these individuals in office that have come up with this law and the soon to be signed voter suppression law. No one else. And my guess is if the general election was held this November instead of next year any of these legislators who are up for re-election would be re-elected by the same majority who elected them in the first place.
Yes this thread is aimed at both the state legislators and the majority of Texas voters who elected them.
There could be another thread like this but aimed at the Democratic voters of CA if they decide to sit out this ridiculous recall election and we find out after September 14 that Larry Elder, a trump supporter and nut case, is the new Governor of California.
Bottom line is a lot of what ails this country is because of the choices voters , on both sides, make.

I just got an email from the ACLU that the Supreme Court did not respond to their emergency request to block the bill. This country elected Trump to put a conservative court in place. Votes have consequences. And so does not voting.

I think as this plays out we'll see that the people most likely to "enforce" the law by filing a lawsuit are not as inclined to do so by targeting their well-off private practice friends - because who knows when their wife, sister, or daughter may need such a service. This is meant to make the county health providers shake in their shoes and to do harm to poor people. The white and wealthy here are always tacitly exempt from onerous laws.

You can stand in solidarity with us or continue to bitch, but ultimately, the centrist president you wanted and the blue-state-representing senate majority leader have not followed through on their promise to protect voting rights. Without that, it doesn't matter how many of us vote for women's rights in Texas. The deck is stacked against us. And elitist coastal liberals like you are helping them by continuing to dump on us and using the GOP talking points about "socialists" when talking about our candidates who might actually take action. Remember that the next time you cast a presidential primary vote for someone best described as a political sidekick, and kindly fuck off. Now I'm out of this thread and off to start calling my representatives AGAIN.

Remember that the next time you cast a presidential primary vote for someone best described as a political sidekick, and kindly fuck off. Now I'm out of this thread and off to start calling my representatives AGAIN. A couple of points. First you need to take off your rose colored glasses and look at the reality of what this country is facing. Second I voted for Pete Buttigieg in the CA primary. Who I believed you mentioned in an earlier post would be a better president then President Biden. Speaking of President Biden. I’m curious, just exactly what do you think The President and Chuck Schumer should do about the obstacles standing in their way of removing the filibuster aka as Democratic Senators Manchin and Sinema? Do you think they should get some hit squad to take them out and then replace them with doubles to vote for removing the filibuster? Or that they should talk to George Lucas and see if that “force be with you “ thing is real and that maybe Luke Skywalker can manipulate them enough to vote yes? Old Luke was pretty masterful in the Mandalorian when he walked through that that group of bad guys on that ship. It’s amazing what one can do with the “force”. Standing in solidarity has nothing to do with pointing out the facts. One shouldn’t point out what the majority of voters in Texas have done because it hurts your feelings? That we should just ignore the fact that these individuals the majority of voters in Texas elected may have come up with a way to overturn Roe v Wade? No question that voter suppression laws and gerrymandering are huge problems in some states and there those fighting gerrymandering and voter suppression laws in the courts. In fact almost as soon as the Texas Voter Suppression law is signed there will be law suits filed. And yes it would be nice if we could somehow get Manchin and Sinema to vote to eliminate the filibuster to pass the VRA. If you have any suggestions on how to accomplish this let President Biden or Senator Schumer know. I’m sure they would like to hear from you if you do. But that doesn’t change the fact that how people vote are at the root of a lot that ails this country. Its not just who one votes for or what issue they for or if they even bother to vote or even registered to vote. All of them apply and all are problematic. Especially those who don’t show up for every election or any election for that matter. Those numbers are disgraceful. They should be at least 95% for every election if not at 100%. From Brookings… The non-college white turnout spike helped to increase the overall white turnout in 2020 (from 65% to 71%), elevating the overall white turnout level, which continues to exceed other race and ethnic groups. Yet increased turnout was also evident for Asian American voters (a 10-point increase) and Latino and Hispanic voters (a 6-point increase). Black voters also showed a turnout spurt from their dip in the 2016 election. While 2020’s Black turnout—at 63%—still exceeded that of Latino or Hispanic or Asian American voters, it remains below the rate of the two elections won by Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012 (Download Table A).GEN Z PROPELLED A SURGE IN YOUNG ADULT TURNOUT
Consistent with much of the recent past, older adults voted at higher rates in 2020 than their younger counterparts. However, younger age groups showed the greatest turnout increase in that election, rising by 8 points for those aged 18 to 29. In total, over half of these young adults turned out to vote. Even more remarkable is the rise in turnout of the youngest of this group: those aged 18 to 24, who are now mostly members of “Gen Z.” This group was especially notable in 2020, as they comprised a large part of the summer’s political and racial justice protests, leading analysts to speculate if this activism would translate into voter turnout.”Calling your representative again is going to do what exactly? If you are talking about your local representative and that person is a Democrat what do you expect them to do? If they are a Republican, I suspect they will politely listen while giving you the finger. Our politicians have become very good at insulating themselves from the public if they want and especially if they know that no matter what they say or do they will get re-elected. Meaning there is no accountability for more than a few elected officials. There are exceptions to this as nothing is absolute, but not nearly enough are held accountable or asked to justify their vote as there should be.

“abortion is settled law” and it’s not something anyone should consider when voting. Anyone who really thinks/thought that is beyond moronic in their thinking. They will push and push and push and push and never give up cuz their special book tells them so. They will chip away at it until they can destroy it completely. If that is ever not true, it won't be for decades yet. IT MATTERS. VOTING MATTERS. DONATIONS MATTER. ADVOCACY MATTERS. I honestly felt that about abortion laws for a long time because of Roe v Wade .

You are the one who needs to take off some glasses. This has nothing to do with hurt feelings and everything to do with y’all throwing away 38 electoral votes that are yours for the taking because CA folks prefer looking down their noses at red states rather than actually grappling with societal problems. It’s shortsighted and stupid. You’re as bad as Republicans - you’ve got yours, so screw those hapless red state Democrats who haven’t yet overcome their lack of voting protections to save your right to reproductive freedom.
Buttigieg is a centrist and would have been just as bad as Biden with this. Nothing in my post implies anything except that Christians wouldn’t have allowed him in the White House.
The DNC, if directed by Biden, could put financial pressure on Manchin and Sinema to get them in line. That’s what the RNC does, and it’s very effective. Biden is too afraid of upsetting the Republicans to do that.
Yes, we have a turnout problem, but you know as well as I that a lot of that is precipitated by the fact that people here feel their votes done count. And the Democratic majority in Congress hasn’t done a single thing to fix that.
Honestly, I kinda hope the CA recall effort succeeds. I think y’all deserve a little taste of this. Can wait to fly my middle finger at the rich coastal liberals who only want democracy if it doesn’t cost them too much.
I have a Democratic US rep and a Democratic state rep, because hey, we’re not all mouth-breathing cretins down here. And they’re both active in voting rights efforts, which includes putting financial pressure on Democrats who cave. Since Feinstein won’t help us with that, apparently. Maybe you could hit her up.

Just remember they are pro- birth. None of them care about assisting mothers out of poverty or feeding kids.
Being hungry causes problem with kids in school, which affects learning and them being able to do better.
I've been poor. There were times when my DS and I had cheese and crackers for dinner. And yes it was the 5pound block of government surplus cheese, powdered milk, peanut butter that had to be mixed, and a few other assorted things. Too much in general for two but surely not enough for for mom and 3 kids.

With all of the extreme gerrymandering in Texas, the representatives may not have been elected by a majority of voters. Which is exactly why the Senate needs to get their act together and pass a voting rights bill. Do whatever it takes to pass the bill - eliminate the filibuster or carve out an exception. Democrats need to unite behind a national voting rights bill.

I would also like to point out that the Texas bill is terrible, but many other states have passed or will pass equally terrible ones. In other words, this is not just a Texas problem. www.npr.org/2021/09/01/1033202132/texas-abortion-ban-what-happens-nextIf the federal courts ultimately allow this law to stand, it's very likely that other conservative states will move to pass similar laws. Seago, with Texas Right to Life, said his organization is working with activists in multiple states who are eager to replicate this model if it succeeds in blocking access to most abortions in Texas. "It is still a bit untested. We're still working on what these lawsuits are going to look like if the industry decides to break the law," Seago said. "So it is a new model that we're still testing out."

And the GOP will say they should have kept their legs together. Maybe keeping their legs together is what it would take. If all women of childbearing age could go on a sex strike for a month or two, maybe men would take notice. “If I can’t have reasonable access to birth control or abortion, this is the only way I can guarantee I won’t get pregnant. So not tonight dear. Go solo or take a cold shower.” And yes, I know it’s not realistic because many women are in no position to say no. But a girl can dream, can’t she?
