I make a broccoli with a soy sauce and cashews. It is amazing and tastes good with the traditional Thanksgiving flavors. What non traditional dish do you serve? Broccoli Cashew Recipe

I always make spanakopita (spinach & feta in phyllo pastry) for DH and usually get asked to bring them if we aren't hosting dinner. ETA I don't have a true recipe, just a little of this, little of that I learned from my MIL. There are tons of recipes out there, and this is the one closest to what I make. Spanakopita
Parmesan is a substitute for the Greek cheese kefalotyri (usually available at a Mediterranean market or Whole Foods). I also add about 1/4 tsp of nutmeg and a little finely chopped lemon zest. I never add any salt because the feta is salty enough and I use salted butter. If you don't want to make triangles, layer 5-6 sheets of phyllo in a 9x13 baking pan, add the filling and top with more layers of phyllo and just bake a little longer than the individual pies (35-40 min?).

We always have someone put together 7-layer salad. Not sure if you consider that traditional or not.

My stepmother makes this jello thing with cranberries and nuts and cream cheese and more. It is very adult (for jello) and even the food snobs love it. Well, actually we make her bring it for every big dinner, not just Thanksgiving.

Where I live most people have keibasi with all holiday meals but I don't think that's traditional in most areas. So its sort of traditional and sort of not.

She got a huge glass bowl as a wedding gift and brought a double-batch in that bowl the first several years...so we named it "big green".

And how could I forget the waldorf salad my Mom always makes. Apples, grapes, walnuts and a sweet mayonnaise based sauce.

I wrote this in a different post, but we always start Thanksgiving dinner with a pasta course, usually cavatelli with tomato sauce. It's an Italian thing.

A family member used to always make an "adult" jello that had big soft black cherries soaked in port as well as pecans and other stuff. Everyone raved about it ( I was a kid and not allowed to try it). These days I dont eat jello. If you haven't seen it yet, check out the old jello salad thread on the history board which will have you in stitches

Always a chocolate cream pie, homemade. I always make a chocolate pie as well. It seems like people enjoy mixing a little slice of chocolate along with the other more traditional Thanksgiving flavors.

Ours is more of a potluck. The host does turkey and potatoes, everyone else brings the rest.
I'm assigned salad; chicken, romaine lettuce, cucumbers, carrots, green onions, poppy seed dressing and chinese noodles. No exact recipe. Also need to bring an appetizer; probably those meatballs in grape jelly and chili sauce.

On my side of the family we have lefse and we also have chocolate cake. My uncle's birthday is right around Thanksgiving so we cake as well as pie. Works out great for me, as I am not a pie eater.

trollie, your dish sounds yummy. My sister is planning on having her boyfriend bring jumbo shrimp with cocktail sauce. She is going to make a sour dough bread with onions and cheese. Otherwise, we have the same menu as the last 40+ years.

We always have a pasta dish to start and I serve guacamole and chips as one of the appetizers. A lot of us love guacamole and chips (I make a really good guacamole!) and everyone always requests it, so I make it for all the big holidays! It definitely isn't a traditional Thanksgiving course but it is pretty darn delicious!

We always have a green salad. It's not that untraditional, but I don't often see it on the Thanksgiving menus shared here.

We usually have some kind of seafood - usually shrimp dish but occasionally gumbo. Mom is trying to get down to the boats today to pick up the shrimp.
We also always have a green salad (at pretty much every meal at my parent's house), but I probably wouldn't list it on the menu either. I would just forget.

WE have to have lime jello with pineapple & carrots. My mom used to put chopped walnuts in it but my kids have nut allergies so we leave them out.

Many times I bring one and people are surprised to see it. It's a salad, it's not alarming. In my family it's against the rules to have salad for Thanksgiving or Christmas. Why? Because you can't put gravy on it! My SIL tried to sneak one on the table a few Christmases ago (her family always has green salad) but we quickly nipped that in the bud! Totally random aside, but your post made me think of that. We do salads for every other meal, Christmas and Thanksgiving are a no go due to the gravy factor. ETA: And the broccoli cashew sounds like something I want to try for tonight's "we have to use up as many vegetables as possible because the fridge is bursting" meal.

Thanks for asking, I'm happy to share . This is one I learned from MIL, so I've never had a written recipe and was surprised to see how many variations are out there. I added a link to one that is very close to ours.

Not sure if this is non-traditional since it's traditional for our family, but I make my Grandma's fruit salad every year. It's a combination of apples, bananas, walnuts, cranberry sauce and whipped cream. It's more a dessert than salad but we always have it on holidays
