We have a Toyota that has the push button starter. I never liked it and now I really hate it.
My husband arrived home a few minutes after our daughter. She left the car running! It was in the garage still running. It could’ve been bad. It has a full tank of gas.
I’m so scared to think about what could’ve happened.
Has anyone heard of a trick or something to do to help this not happen again? We could make her park outside, but that’s all I can think of.

Where was the key? Mine plays an obnoxious alarm when the key leaves the vehicle while it’s running

Mine plays an alarm too when the car is running any I walk away with the key. I bet it automatically stops after so many minutes. Kinda like the auto start, we can start it from inside the house to warm up but if we don’t push the button it automatically turns off. I can’t believe a car would be made that would let a car keep running.

There was a pea who told the story about parking the car at the airport and coming back to an empty tank because of this. I recently left the engine running on DS’s Sentra. I looked up my car’s settings and it looks like I have an idle shutoff at 10 minutes (this default setting can be turned off). Maybe you have something similar?

The key was inside. She leaves it in the car. We’ve just always done that since it’s in the garage. Hmm. I wonder if our car will make a noise. I’ll try it- thank you!

I can’t believe a car would be made that would let a car keep running. I think in this case she left it running. She did not push the button to turn off the car so it would keep running. To the OP. Do you have carbon monoxide detectors in your home? I work for the fire department and we respond quite often for CO detector activations caused by cars accidently left running in the garage. CO detectors save lives. Everyone should have them in their home and check the expiry date. Replace them when they are 10 years old.

I hope you come up with a solution. I personally know 2 people (separate incidents) who died from carbon monoxide poisoning because a car was left running in the garage and they were in the house.

That’s so sad, LibraryLady. I’m sorry. We are definitely going to figure something out. I can’t take the chance. Yes, we have detectors in the house. Thank you for asking.

I don’t have a push button start car but my mom does and I’ve driven her car before. If I forget to turn it off and start to walk away the car starts beeping at me after a certain distance, it isn’t far. Make sure the car key is taken out of the car every single time.

First of all, everyone should have a CO detector. Put one on each floor.
Second, don't leave the keys in the car.
Third, I guess she'll need to learn to turn it off just like a keyed vehicle, the stove, a curling iron, etc. Have a place to hang keys conveniently inside the door and make sure it's utilized.

And check them every once in a while They do expire - CO detectors expire at either 5 or 7 years. The date of manufacture should be in fine print on the back. If it’s 7 or more years it should be replaced. Unless the CO is a dual with a 10 year smoke detector then it ‘expires’ after the 10 years after manufacture ( not installation! )

A garage isn't much safer place to leave an unlocked car than the street is. She needs to get in the habit of not leaving the car unlocked anywhere. When you leave it unlocked at home the day WILL come when you forget to take the key and lock the door at work or out shopping. My key fob lives in the side zipper pocket of my purse. My purse never stays in the car. Car door is locked even when parked in my garage.

I hate my push button ignition. I can never tell when the car is on, off, whether just the electricity is on, it’s off all the way, etc.
Seriously, I detest it.
I’m going to read this thread to see if anyone has suggestions.
My car does not stop if I walk away with the key. I’ll put the key in my purse and my DH will drop me off somewhere and I’ll take the key with me, but he can still drive the car. It doesn’t stop after a certain period of time or a certain distance. It only becomes an issue if you turn the car off and try to restart it.

No real help to give. My car will stay running if I walk away with the key, but it will beep. I assumed that if someone tried to put it in drive without the key it would shut down, similar to my previous car starters. But I never really looked it up and this is my first push button. I am so so on it…at this point I don’t hate it and I don’t love it.

Wow I don’t have this but it sounds so dangerous if people have died. You would think there would be some sort of safety mechanism so this couldn’t happen.
I can’t imagine leaving keys in my car even in the garage but it sounds like some do. I hope you figure out a way to prevent this in the future.
This reminds me we should check our carbon monoxide monitors.

I've had push button for at least 5 years and have never left my car running. Never left it running with keys either. Just put it in park and turn it off, at home or out - either by pushing or turning a key it's really no different. I love never digging around for my keys. I've never not had a vehicle, the motor, turn off when I've pushed the button. I've had 2 push button, DH has had 2 push button trucks and DD has a push button also. Some have a light on the button, which is nice.

If it was left running (like to warm it up) it would auto shutoff after 15 minutes. Leaving the key fob in the car is almost asking for the car to be stolen, even with it parked in the garage. Most big overhead garage doors are insanely easy to break into. Do a search on YouTube to see just how quickly someone can get in when they know what they’re doing and it will scare the crap out of you. You will never leave the key in your car or the service door between the house and the garage unlocked again.

I can’t imagine leaving my keys in the car even in the garage. I have my house key on my fob and I keep it in my purse along with my epipen. That way if I change purses it is easy to grab and I can’t be locked out of my house or car. I absolutely think your daughter needs to find out if her car has auto off after a certain time or not and also how far her key needs to be to keep her car running first off. But most importantly she needs to keep her key someplace safe, which is not in the car or near enough that the car recognizes it.

We stream music through Amazon Music when in the car, so the music ends when my kid pushes stop on his phone, usually when we turn onto our street. I guess I’ll have to get them in the habit of leaving it on all the way until we get out of the car.

I drove to the grocery store less than a mile away and turned the car off. Fortunately, I was able to walk to her PT site and get the keys. One of the office staff members was kind enough to drive me back to the car.

In my old neighborhood, we had a couple rashes of break ins of unlocked cars parked in driveways. In one instance, the burglars used the garage door opener to get inside the garage- and the door connecting the house to the garage was unlocked. The burglars then went into the house - and the homeowners were HOME. They were scared to death. I locked my doors constantly - I'd even lock my back door to my fully fenced backyard when I let my dogs out in the morning.

my car flashes "goodbye" on the screen when the car is off, and the music stops and there is a loud noise if I don't take the key.
you need to find ways to check what is happening.

The car is not dangerous. It is the same as a car with a key in the ignition. If the driver does not put the car in park and remove the key they are leaving it running. In the case of a push button start the driver puts the car in park and pushes the button where the key would be and it stops the car. Leaving the car running is driver error not a manufacturers defect or a fault with the system. My push button start on my Dodge Journey is a large button that says Start/Stop and on the ring around it it says OFF, ACC, RUN. Those words light up to tell me which one it is in. So when I push the button it says RUN and that stays lit up until I shut it off. Those of you who say you cannot tell when your vehicle is running on not, do you have something like that? Or somewhere on the dash it says the word RUN? Or the start button lights up? I don't know, I have driven a Jeep with a push button start and a Journey. Both were the same idea. In the case of the OP I think keeping the keys in her purse instead of leaving them in the car would solve the problem. The car beeps when the key leaves the vehicle. Or always drive with the radio on and if it does not turn off when you open the door you did not shut off your car.

A couple of times I thought I turned off the engine, but it was still on. I noticed when I opened the door and the radio was still on.
One time we took my car but SO was driving. He dropped me off to pick up something and because there was no parking, he drove off to circle the lot. I realized that I had the key. I was worried the car would stall. When he picked me up, he said the car was beeping the whole time, but the engine didn’t cut off.
One downside of push button cars is that I have to search for my house keys when I get home.
ETA - The push button on my car just says start/stop. There is no ACC/Run wording on it.

I agree with the others, start taking the keys out of the cars when you are home.
As for the car, I would take it back to the dealer and ask them to show you any tips/tricks you might have missed when first picking up the car. I'm sure they have seen this issue before and should have answers for you on how to avoid it (besides taking the keys out when you exit the car).

I honestly love my push button start and have no issues with it but if you're distracted I can see where it would be easy to leave it running. I think it's harder for the younger generation to have a good habit of turning the car off and taking the keys with you because the newer technology is all they know.
What if you put a sign on the door (BIG and colorful) asking "Did you turn the car off" as a reminder for her? Maybe that could help a little?
