not sure this has been discussed before but saw this on twitter asking which fictional death hit you hard....
i am a crier (movies, books, commercials... you name it, it has made me cry) but i remember watching top gun and when goose died...it physically hurt. every time i have watched top gun since, i cry harder when it happens. it's like subconsciously i keep hoping for it not to happen, but it still does.
the other one i am thinking of is in "we need to talk about kevin"... the book. when celia dies, i was laying in bed sobbing. i have not seen the movie... not sure i could stomach it, knowing it is coming.
what fictional character death stands out to you as one that provoked a strong emotional response?

I can't remember specific ones, but I know I have cried at the death of characters (both in movies and books) and animals. What is that Will Smith movie where he has to shoot his dog? I've never seen that movie and I don't really want to because I don't want to see the dog die.

I typically don't get that wrapped up in characters, but the death in The Poisonwood Bible hit me hard. On TV, Chidi from The Good Place and Henry Blake on MASH.
ETA: I just asked my DD her answer to this. She said the dad from How to Train Your Dragon. That one was pretty sad.

From TV: Opie in Sons of Anarchy, Adriana in The Sopranos and Matthew Crawley in Downton Abbey are the first to come to mind. Books: the boys in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (would have to look up the names ).

I wonder if any other pea will know what I’m talking about - as a kid I read A Summer to Die and I cried super hard. I also really cried in Steel Magnolias.

The movie "Me before You", the scene when Lou is with Will, before he passes. Heart wrenching.

Every character, basically. I’m a sap. Me too! When Sophia comes out of the barn in the Walking Dead. As a matter of fact a lot of the characters on the Walking Dead. And most were zombies

Gutted might be a little strong, but it took a while to come to terms with the death of Will on The Good Wife.

Bobby Simone in NYPD Blue. XDH and I both sobbed our hearts out. I’ve had a soft spot for Jimmy Smits ever since.

The very first person who came to mind was Henry Blake on MASH. I will never forget that moment.
My second thought was Sybil on Downton. That was gut wrenching.

I agree about the dogs - I will avoid watching a movie if I know the dog is going to die. I will sob. Other fictional character deaths that really upset me were Mark Green's death on ER, Shelby's in Steel Magnolias and Colin Creevey in Harry Potter.
I was sad when other HP characters died (Dumbledore, Dobby, Hedwig, Fred) but for some reason I was so upset with Colin died..I think because he was just so sweet, young and innocent.

Kate on "NCIS". Even though I wasn't wild about her character her death was a total shock. Ziva on "NCIS". So sad. (even though it turned out not to be true, but we didn't learn that for quite a long time). Henry Blake on "MASH".

(Dr) Sweets on Bones. Mark on ER--when I think of or hear Over the Rainbow, that's the version I hear.

Most recently, Ty on Heartland, Had to remove my contacts after binging that season, I cried so much.
Angel from the musical Rent.
Enzo from Art of racing in the rain.
(the last two deaths changed my life)

Henry Blake also. Many might know this, but the cast did not know what Radar was going to say, no one knew Henry was going to die. Their reactions were real, not scripted. The episodes when they were being interviewed were also not scripted. They just replied in character. That was a great show.

I am a crier so there have been many. I haven’t read the responses yet because I know I am going to agree with so many of them…the tears will come…and I won’t be able to see to write. 😉😆
Rocky Dennis in Mask. (Not really a fictional character but the movie portrayal of his death) Wade Garrett in Roadhouse

The first one that comes to mind is Charlotte, I was only about 8 but I was devastated. The last passage can still make me cry. Then Hans Huberman and Rudy Steiner from The Book Thief. I did the ugly cry for a good hour and gave myself a migraine.

Not Dumbledore as much but Dobby SLAYED me. And if you’ve ever read the book “A Little Life” - oh, Lord. I walked around in a slump for a week after I finished it.

Leo McGarry on West Wing. I sob through the memorial episode every time I watch that episode. I loved the character and was a big fan of John Spencer and that he died in real life made it even more emotional for me.
