A spinoff on mymindseyedpea thread on names... If you had to choose a different first name now, what would it be? I had an aunt named Emma and I always liked that name, so that is what I would pick now. When I was a kid, I felt my name was unusual and wanted something common. If asked at that age, my answer would have been Cindy or Lisa. I'm sure there are some who would say they would never change their name - but this is just for fun.

when I was in middle school, I hated my name. no one could pronounce it correctly, no one could spell it right.. and so when I went to summer camp, I told people my name was Robin. kept it up for a week. when I grew up, I appreciated my name more.. as I am the 4th one in a row with this name. I never met the grandmother I was named after.. I was going to be named after my living grandmother.. but she objected.. so my sister was named Edith.. 10 yrs later.. and I had the dead grandmother's name.

It's not that I love my name or anything. In fact, I literally never think about it and can't imagine what I would change it to that I like any more (or less).
My nickname, Jo, has more meaning to me because only those closest to me ever use it - wouldn't trade that.

I DID change my first and middle names as an adult. It is now Allison Elizabeth ( E is after my grandmother).

When I went to a different school at age 12, nobody knew me there so I told them to call me by a different name, which they did. Even the teachers did. I really liked the anonymity of it.
I had umpteen different names I wanted to be when I was little. From memory; Julie-Ann, Anne-Marie, Perdita, Della, Callie, Nicola, Natalie, Claire/Clara (to rhyme with airer, not Zara), Beth, Katharine, Christine. Probably every heroine from all my favourite books, actually!

I don't have a specific name I would choose, as I don't mind my name, I just want something more fun to write. Something that starts with an S or an L, then a Q for a middle initial. Laverne Q. Snicklefritz or something like that. My first and last name are super boring to write as they have lots of up and down letters. No curly or fancy letters.

When my mom was pregnant with me, my parents had a big debate. My dad wanted to name me Rebecca and my mom was of the opinion they should just name me Becki. And I guess they could not come to any agreement about it and therefore decided to name me Roxanne. Well I came out and they took one look at me and decided I was a Becki. I don't like that I was given a nickname and with a misspelling too. But I think my name suits me and I can't imagine changing it. However, I do think it would be very cool had my name been Roxanne.

If asked at that age, my answer would have been Cindy or Lisa. Too funny, Cindy was my pick as a child. Or Holly. I thought they were just beautiful names. If I were changing it now I'd go for the lovely Genevieve and happily correct everyone who mispronounces it.

I am a 60ish YO Susan, and as a child I always hated it. There were always 4 or 5 Susans in my class at school, and I wanted to have something less common. Now I am older, I appreciate my name more - I was named for one of my mum's aunties, who died in an accident as a young child and that has more meaning to me now. Mum said she always intended to name her first daughter Susan, and it just happened that I was born during a boom time for the name. I don't think I ever had another name I wanted to be, I just didn't like my name.

I always HATED my name as a kid. Nobody every spelled it correctly, and it was always mispronounced (I'm a TONYA spelled as Tanya). And there were never magnets or pencils or keychains with my name on them! As I've gotten older I've stopped correcting people when they say it wrong, and while I still don't love it I have accepted it & couldn't imagine a different name. When I was in my 20s and pregnant my mom told me she almost named me Molly. I think I'm happy she chose what she did!
My dd is an Allison. With 2 L's. She always gets people spelling it wrong too. And while her dad & a few of her friends call her Ally, she always introduces herself as Allison. And her boyfriend calls her by her full name also.

I can’t say that I love my name, but do wish that it was spelled with one L vs the Americanized double L. (Michelle vs Michele). I always had 2 or 3 other Michelles in my classes and I grew up in a smallish town. I do think that the name Michelle is thought of as a bitchy person. I’ll own that some of the time!

I dislike my name. It is definitely identifiable to a certain time period. It’s also a bit of a mouthful with my married name (which obviously could not have been predicted). So if I could pick I’d go with a timeless straightforward name like Claire.

I don't mind my name.
If I had to change it, I would pick a weird old man's name, like Frankie or Charlie or Billy. I like to think I am cool enough to pull it off
Mind you, I do have a unisex name, and most people assume I am a male, but it's just not a hip greaser name.

When I was a kid, I went thru a Bambi phase. Also Libby.
Now, I think Tess Olivia McKenzie would be cool. People would call me "Tommy", for my initials--- then when meeting me, they'd be surprised that I'm a girl.

The only thing I remember thinking about my name when I was a kid was that the only other woman with my name was an old lady. So in my 5 year old brain I considered Christine an old lady name. I don't recall having something else in mind though.

Remember in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, when his sister met Charlie Sheen at the police station, and tried to get him to call her Shawna?

57 year old Lisa. One of the millions born in the 60s. I love my middle name, Charlotte, but it never occurred to me as a kid that I could choose what to be called.
My mom said she always wanted to name her daughter, Chimène, from El Cid. By the time she was pregnant with my older brother she had settled on Lisa if she had a girl.
My mother legally changed her name as an adult. She went from Renae NMI to Diane Renae. She also chose a new last name that had nothing to do with our family. There were reasons, that I will not go into, other than to say she did some shady shit that could have gotten her some prison time. She also got a new SSN.

I am Susan, Sue for short. Very plain, very straightforward, it suits me and I don't remember ever wanting another name. My Dad wanted to name me Valerie Ann when I was born. Mom objected, so they compromised and Valerie became my middle name. I don't identify with that name but occasionally my husband calls me Val and I'm okay with that. If I really had to choose a different name it would be Margaret, Maggie for short, after a great-grandmother.

I have about the most damn common name from my era, but misspelled. But, it is what it is… If I were changing it now I'd go for the lovely Genevieve and happily correct everyone who mispronounces it. What’s the correct pronunciation? (Please be the French one. 🤞🏻)

I like my name. Even though it is popular it shows up often in my genealogy. I like that I was named after family.
I don't have a middle name and that has always been a disappointment. I would chose Ellesbeth.
And I would love to change my last name. I would take my mom's madien name in a heart beat.

My name is Susan, not Sue, or Suzy or Suzanne. That's what my mom and my older sister taught me from very young to tell people. It must have worked because no one calls me any of those. A handful of close friends and sometimes DH call me SueSue, but I can live with that.
When I was a kid, all of my girl little people were named Alicia (A lee sha). I guess I would pick that name if I had to chose another name. I wouldn't mind a classic name like Elizabeth, Margaret, or Anna. Oh, how about Josephine and be called Jo- I kinda like that too.

What’s the correct pronunciation? ( Please be the French one. 🤞🏻) Of course! I once worked with the most effortlessly stylish Genevieve from Monaco, although she was introduced to me as "Jenny". She said it was less painful to be called that than the mangled versions she'd get of Genevieve. We became immediate friends when I said her name correctly (courtesy of spending a year in France).

I don't dislike my name, but never totally loved it either. Since my given name ("Wendy") can also be a nickname for "Gwendolyn" (which I really dislike!!), when I was growing up I often had to do the whole explanation: My name is Wendy-with-a-Y, not Gwendolyn, not Wendy-with-an-I. And still some friends(??) thought it was funny to call me Gwendolyn - ugh, it's not my name!! There were also 2 other Wendys (same spelling, also their given names, not nicknames) in my tiny town, so we stuck together in our name righteousness, LOL.
When I was a child I wanted to be named Suzanne, Danielle, or Genevieve - not any of their shortened/nickname forms. Nothing wrong with the nicknames, they just weren't for me. I just thought those 3 names were so pretty, classic, and feminine. I sill like those names, but like others equally well. I like my name well enough that I don't think I'd ever change it.

(My BIL's initials are ASS, and it totally suits him.) On top of having a unisex name that most people assume is male, my married last name is Punjabi. On a daily basis, I have to explain / defend why I am not an Indian man!

I didn't like my name as a child - it was super common and there were always several of us in any class (and I moved a ton as a kid) and I hated being Linda Mac (my last name started with Mac - and there was usually already a Linda M). As an adult, most of the women I run into with my name are 5-20 years older.
BUT my parents told me it was a compromise - Dad wanted Gwendolyn and to call me Wendy; Mum wanted Deirdre and to call me DeeDee...looking at those options, Linda doesn't seem quite so bad, just boring, lol
