This makes me wonder about putting lime-sugared nuts on top of Ocean Spray jellied cranberry sauce. J/k... kinda.

My mom always made cranberry salad at Thanksgiving, but although it had jello in it, it did not look like jello. It had oranges, chopped apple and nuts in it, and it was delicious. I haven’t had it for years. This recipe is similar: food52.com/recipes/7554-mama-s-cranberry-salad

Hmmm, I'll need to find my Jello recipe. It had orange jello, orange sherbet and mandarin oranges. My sister makes my Nana's cranberry jello salad every thanksgiving.

My mom used to make the same thing. She also made a jello "salad" with fruit cocktail in it, "frosted" with dream whip and topped with grated cheese. Both of these were on our Christmas dinner table. Childhood memories.

The other weird jello salad that mom made was orange jello with finely grated carrots and crushed pineapple. We always had this in lemon flavoured jelly (jello) at Christmas when I was a kid. On the Dec Daily thread on the GS board we've been discussing these, both the salads and the NYT article, and I'm fairly committed to the idea of making this one for our family dinner.

Ugh, I had so much jello salad growing up, I am definitely not ready for it to make a comeback.

I make one with raspberry jello, whole berry cranberry gel, crushed pineapple, walnuts and apple juice. It’s topped with a sour cream and cream cheese topping. We all love it. It sounds strange and extended family was dubious until they tried it. I grew up with it so the recipe is over 50 years old.

My mom made the orange-carrot- pineapple jello when i was a kid, too. When I was in chemo in 2020 and didn't feel like eating much, and couldn't travel home to see my mom because of covid, I made a pan of that jello and ate it for several days. Very tasty and comforting. I like a cranberry jello as well. I think putting tart things into the jello helps cut the sweetness a bit. But no weird stuff! Looking at the recipe from the NYT, I see that it doesn't use Jello, but unflavored gelatin, which is great because you can then control the sweetness and use all different kinds of juices to flavor it. No artificial colors, either.

Jello dishes were not a thing in my family. Some of what is being described sounds scary to me, lol.
The only jello dessert I’ve enjoyed includes a crust made from crushed pretzels and a cream cheese layer in the middle.

As someone who grew up on the old school orange jello with pineapple and grated carrots - I think it’s time to introduce GenZ to its deliciousness.

mollycoddle - the recipe you linked says in 2017 and 2018 it was the site's most visited page for November! 😃 "thatmidwesternmom" had an Instagram story about this NY Times jello salad feature My daughter always requests fresh cranberry orange relish for Thanksgiving, but she was living cross country so I skated by with Trader Joe's. Since she'll be home this year, I have to go cranberry shopping(apologies--no jello.)

It really is delicious-a bit tart, which is a nice balance to other Thanksgiving dishes. Mom’s had jello mixed in, but it definitely looked like a relish. It probably was just used to bind and to add sweetened to the cranberries. I should find that recipe.

We always had jello salad at Thanksgiving and Christmas. I really loved one that had apples and walnuts and I think red hot candy was dissolved in it. It was cinnamon flavored and delicious.
I absolutely love the strawberry pretzel one. I could eat the whole pan.
I also remember a ribbon one with layers of different colors of jello. That one was always tricky because the layers slid away from each other when you put it on the plate.
I know jello salads are outdated but now I'm really craving one.
The vegetable aspic things that the peas post are disgusting, though.
This also reminds me that I need to make jello shots.

My dh grew up with a cranberry jello salad for Thanksgiving. I make it every year.
I did switch up the recipe to use sugar-free black cherry jello and also less added sugar. It has chopped fresh cranberries, crushed pineapple, chopped celery, chopped orange, and chopped walnuts. Dh can't taste that it is sugar-free jello - it has more add-ins than jello.
I actually like it.

My great aunt always made a jello ring for Thanksgiving. Lime. Made creamy. with shredded cheddar cheese in it.Strange that no one has offered to pick that up in her stead.

Cranberry Salad
1 6 oz package raspberry Jell-O 1 cup hot water 1 16 oz can whole cranberry sauce 1 13 ¼ oz can crushed pineapple, un-drained 2/3 cup port wine or fruit juice ½ cup chopped walnuts
Topping: Blend 6 oz cream cheese (softened) and 1 cup sour cream.
Dissolve Jell-O in hot water. Pour into 9x13 pan. Stir in other ingredients. Chill until firm then top with topping.
They don't make cans of pineapple that size anymore so I just wing it and then have a little extra to eat I use apple or cranapple for the juice.

My family used to make the ambrosia stuff with the jello, mini marshmallows, canned fruit salad, coconut and I don’t know what else. I was never a huge fan. I have only vague recollections of jello with shredded carrots in it so it must not have been a staple in our household growing up. I do like the strawberry pretzel jello dessert. I prefer it more like bars though and less like a trifle.

We practically fought over who got to have the last of the jello mold my mother made for Thanksgiving. It was lime jello, sour cream, crushed pineapple and chopped walnuts.
So it didn’t look like see-through jello, looked more like creamy pistachio or mint ice cream.
Googling it, some have cherries or pecans or marshmallows but ours didn’t. I’d eat it now but can’t (lactose intolerant and to another ingredient even lactose free milk has.)

I make a layered jello *salad* for Christmas and use a clear bowl so that the colours are visible and the layers don't slide.
Bottom layer - Lime jello made with 1 cup hot (boiling) water and the drained crushed pineapple from a can. Reserve the pineapple liquid as this is used in the 2nd layer. Chill until set
2nd layer - Lemon or pineapple jello made with juice from above pineapple can and add hot water to make 1 cup. Heat this liquid (in a 4 cup glass bowl) for a minute on high in the microwave, stir in the jello powder and let cool. While this jello is cooling down, soften a package of cream cheese. Follow the directions on a package of dream whip, that you have already made (or 1/2 cup of whipping cream, whipped). Blend the softened cream cheese and the dream whip together until smooth and slowly add the cooled jello. The jello mix will be thick and will blend well with the cream cheese/dream whip mixture. Chill until set.
Top Layer - 1 package of cherry jello made as directed on the package. Let this cool down and then gently pour over the middle layer. This should be a clear topping. Chill overnight and cover bowl with plastic wrap. Delicious!
