TL;DR - DoorDash charges a lot in fees. I am old and crotchety. Neither of these is a newsflash. DH and I both had a really long day today, so we decided to get delivery Chinese food. I plugged everything in on their site, only to discover they no longer offer delivery, you have to go through DoorDash, etc. Now, I know the prices are inflated, plus you have to add in a tip, etc. (I mean, 25 cents should be good enough, right? ) But just for fun, I compared the totals of what I'd spend for the delivery direct from the place, plus fee and tip, vs. DoorDash with fees and tips. At first, I was pleasantly surprised that the difference between something like 4 entrees and 2 apps was only something like $4 (like $77 vs $73). I assumed the same tip for each order. My DoorDash delivery fee was free, the restaurant would have charged $3. But by the time you added in the other fees, DoorDash was $32 more than the restaurant delivery! I guess that's why they no longer offer the direct from restaurant one. Every time I go to order with these apps, I'm shocked anew. I end up not paying it about 3/4 of the time. Tonight I did.

Ha, I posted a very similar thread not that long ago. I'd kind of become numb to the prices because my previous employer gave us a co-working/coffee shop stipend (remote company - to encourage people to get out of their home offices sometimes) that morphed to a food delivery stipend during covid. So it just didn't really matter to me that my lunch was nearly 2x what it would be in the restaurant or as take-out. But now that I'm paying with my own money again, I've kind of given up on the services. After yet another late, slow delivery of lukewarm food at a huge price premium, I decided I was done.
I feel your pain.

One of our goals this year is to reduce the amount we spend on restaurants and DoorDash/GrubHug has been banished it increases the cost SO much. But man, is it convenient. It was even worse when I wanted Chinese, DH wanted sushi, and DD wanted Olive Garden. Now I want Chinese.

Restaurants.
We eat out a lot. The other night we were at Epic Steak in San Francisco and the bill for 2 of us was $250….

I can't feel your pain. LOL!
Though the prices you quote shock me, I would dearly love to have anything delivered to me. I remember one time when we were vacationing and stopped to see some friends. The opened the 'menu' drawer and told my kids to pick what they wanted delivered for supper. It was a concept that blew their minds. And when they went off to college, my daughter called me to say "Mom, I am having cookies delivered to my dorm!" - HA!
No Door Dash, Grub Hub, Pizza or groceries delivered to me. I'm happy UPS can get to me!

I'm cheap. Even if I really didn't want to go pick up the food, I would rather than paying $32.00 more.
But, I know A LOT of people use doordash because I see them at just about every restaurant I go to.

Ha, I posted a very similar thread not that long ago. I'm sorry I missed it. (I know that wasn't your intent, I was just surprised!) Now I want Chinese. I have to say, this particular place is actually pretty good. Short of one of those places in the Chinese part of town (which we don't have here, but if anything, we're in the part of town with the most Chinese people!), it's probably the best (American) Chinese food I've had. And there are usually mostly Chinese people eating there, so I figure that's a decent sign, too! Sorry I can't send you some!

All the delivery services are so high. I quit having our groceries delivered and went back to curbside pickup, which is much cheaper. And we're really trying to limit our restaurant delivery to once a week if that. All the upcharges and extra fees and tips aside, half the time our order is messed up and/or arrives ice cold.
We like to order from the local pizza place that still maintains their own delivery drivers and has reasonable prices.

I wouldn't say I am shocked at the price of drive thrus and take out meals, but I am shocked at how much money some people spend eating out or picking up "work day" lunch, almost every single day. When they complain about always being broke.......I think to myself, you easily spend $40 to $75 a week on work lunch, that's $160 to $300 a month on lunch.

I have never used any of these services, because I'm too cheap. I'm also lazy, but I'd prefer to drag my arse off the couch and go pick up food than pay $32 extra for delivery. I guess my laziness is outweighed by my cheapness! DS and his mates use Uber Eats all the time.

I'm cheap. Even if I really didn't want to go pick up the food, I would rather than paying $32.00 more. I am almost always of that opinion, too. I think the only other time I did it when I had the option to say no was when I discovered a $25 gift card I still had. But in addition to the long day, we both still have a long night ahead of us with work stuff, so I ran with it. But it is kind of sticking in my craw that I'm paying $77 for the food (for 4, plus at least a couple lunches) plus $32 in fees. I guess the fact I got to keep working rather than spending at least an hour driving to and from the place in rush hour traffic should factor in to my calculations. Of course, my job is a volunteer one, so there's no economic upside to continuing to work for that hour, lol.

When DH worked in an office he would spend $25-30/day on lunch, on average. All the guys would go to a sit-down restaurant every day. Do the math. I was SO mad at him sometimes, as I was packing a homemade lunch that could be wolfed down in 20 minutes every day - as teachers don't have time to go out for lunch. Now he works from home so work lunches out are much less often.

It is crazy what DD etc charge.
That said, other than pizza and Jimmy John's, we can't get anything else delivered except via DD, Uber Eats etc. We live in a small town and we are lucky that we can even use those delivery services. It's only been the last few years, mostly since pandemic.
We order delivery once or twice a week. But there are times when I will sit down and start the order, get to the end and say "nope". This week dd and I have been down with COVID and we have relied far too much on DD. For both food and kleenex/meds.

I have literally never done DoorDash or other food deliver services.
Between the fees, the tip, and the overall sketchiness of someone else handling your food, I don’t understand the appeal.

The sadder thing (IMHO) is what DoorDash etc charges the restaurants. They are losing about 30% of their costs to DD. I admit to using it, but when I can order direct from the restaurant for delivery or just go pick up - I do. I don't want my favorite places to suffer and close!

I am one of the cheap ones too. We are lucky to have access to several restaurants with less than a 5 minute drive. And my daughter is happy to pick it up rather than have my everyday cooking!

After yet another late, slow delivery of lukewarm food at a huge price premium, I decided I was done. . I just got tired of paying top dollar from good restaurants and ending up with mediocre food - and disappointed. We have cut back on eating out in general and never order delivery anymore. Occasionally we'll call in an order and pick it up ourselves, but we've even cut that back.

Funny, I just placed a Door Dash food order and came here and saw this. We ordered Chinese and for the two of us, it lasts two dinners and one lunch, so I figure we make out ok. We had a local Italian place that delivered, but our food was always cold. Once they changed to Door Dash, the food arrived hot! I think we were last on their delivery route every time and with Door Dash we are the only order being delivered.

We like to order from the local pizza place that still maintains their own delivery drivers and has reasonable prices. I just started having our groceries delivered lol. Fred Meyer (Kroger) started offering a subscription for delivery (Instacart does the shopping). The prices are the same as in-store, any discounts or digital coupons are clearly labeled in the app, there’s no delivery charge (beyond the monthly $10 for unlimited orders $35 and over), so the only extra cost is a tip. I’m half way through my free 30 day trial and I’m hooked. I’ve always resisted delivery because I’m sooo picky about produce but so far everything has been well chosen. I’ve placed five orders - which is about how many times I would have been at one store or another in two weeks - and it’s saved me a ton of time. It’s quicker than pickup orders because it’s 2-4 hour delivery (or you can pick later, if you want) and i whenever I placed pickup orders, the next day was usually the soonest available tome.

We’d only tried them out when they first started so I had no idea the fees went up that much.
My dd will sometimes get an emergency Diet Coke delivered to her school. McDonalds is a block away but she can’t just leave her class. Every time the delivery is done by my brother’s ex. Then she contacts my brother to let him know. I can only imagine what she’s paying for $1 Diet Coke.

I want to say it was about $9 (but was from Taco Bell, so like $3 base price, not $1). Insanity, but no regrets lol

That is insane. I’d never pay that kind of fee to have food delivered.
Guess my “I’m old” edition is that I’d carry out from a restaurant in my PJs & slippers before I’d pay those fees. 😉

My husband is Door Dash gold star customer (if such titles existed😉), but he’s on a diet and cooking his own food. I can’t tell you how much we are saving! I hope he’s kicked his Door Dash habit.
I picked up a sandwich the other day-just a regular sub and it was $12.99. When did a sub cost more than $10. Clearly I don’t buy them often.

We live in a rural area and never had any food delivered. That being said, we are too cheap to pay those fees. I had some coworkers that would have lunch delivered regularly and would complain about food being cold and being broke! I have never ordered groceries for pick up either.

Our local Chinese restaurant went to using DoorDash or Grub Hub for delivery for a short period of time. The first time I tried it (didn't realize they had switched) I ended up just doing takeout because I couldn't justify the extra cost when we live just a few blocks away. A lot of times we try to just pick it up anyway. They have now gone back to using their own delivery driver. I think that seems better.

We are fortunate that most places we would eat at are local. So we always do pickup. We only used doordash two times and it was for our college daughter 5 hrs. away that was really sick and couldn't make it to the dining hall. I have no idea what it cost because my other daughter did the order for her sister.
I wander if they stopped delivery because they don't have enough employees. The 2 McDonalds near us are only opened for dining M-F from 7am-4pm if they have enough employees. They haven't been opened for dining in on the weekend since before the pandemic. The restaurants around us are still very short staffed, and often close because not enough workers.

We did it a few times back in 2020 but pretty much either cook or do carry out. So many places do carry out now and it’s a win for the restaurants and does not cost so much extra.
I do love carry out and curb side pick up vs going in places and use both services. But I’m too frugal for the service charges - I would be thinking about all of the other things I could buy with that money!
