I was reading this article about a man who went inside a Walmart, only bought a $5 pizza, and then walked out without showing his receipt. The security guy pinned him, reenforcement came in the form of the police, there was some violence, but eventually the guy was released and issued a ticket (which the charge was later dropped). I hope the guy sues for the way he was treated. Anyways, this story brought to mind a couple of questions. 1 - Do you show your receipt at Walmart? I really hate showing my receipt at Walmart. I did not sign any contract that says I have to (like at Costco), and there are no signs up that say to show the receipt. I know to show my receipt at BestBuy because there are signs up. The first few times I shopped at Walmart after they started asking for receipts, I had already shoved the receipt into my purse. So I had to stand there and dig it out. And then they barely look at it. 2 - Is it unusual in your area to see people walk out of a grocery store with unbagged items? People in the comment section mention that it is odd for someone to walk out without their item in a bag. That is not unusual here since stores charge for bags now. I've walked out with my items not in a bag. Sometimes I forget the bags in the car and just push the cart to my car and then put the items in a bag that is in the trunk of my car. www.yahoo.com/news/video-man-being-pinned-police-204018436.html

1. I don’t shop at Walmart. But if I did I would not like having to show a receipt and that would probably lead me to no longer shopping there
2. People walk out without bags all the time here

I never have my items in a bag. When I shop, I place all items with the barcode facing up and scan them quickly that way with the hand-held scanner. Sometimes there is someone to show the receipt to, which I do, and sometimes they do not. I have the bags standing up in the back of my SUV and quickly put my items in there from the cart. Works for me and it's very efficient.

I am only an infrequent Walmart shopper. I have been only asked once to show receipt out of last 4 or 5 visits and that was around Thanksgiving last year. Earlier this year I went to 3 different Walmarts in one day. I was never asked to show receipt to person at door.
I never have items in a bag at Walmart. When I shop there I am only there for a specific item.

I was never asked to show receipt to person at door. Ours has someone at the "exit" side everyday, or at least every time I go there which is at least once a week. They even started to put someone near the "entrance" side because I guess shopper are now exiting that way to avoid the receipt checkers.

With all the shoplifting and theft going on these days I don't mind showing my receipt at all. It only take a couple of seconds. No biggie.

The Walmarts near me are not consistent on their receipt checking at all. I feel like I am often singled out because I will respond to the door greeter and stop when they ask me to whereas most people just keep walking. We get charged for bags here so it's pretty common for people to leave without their items in bags.

The walmarts I go to, have receipt checker(s), but they don't check every persons receipt. Nor do they go over the receipt and compare the items in the cart to the to the items on the receipt, unless it's a pricier item or it's an a not bagged item.
I won't stand in a multiple people long line to show my receipt, I go around the receipt checker. If any store wants to check every single receipt, then they better hire enough staff to do the receipt checking.....to make it a quick departure out of the store for the sake of the customers. I refuse to stand in line for that, because my time is valuable to me.

I forget the massive amounts of money some of our local Wal-marts have lost due to theft but it's awful. One store you show your receipt, another you don't. One tends to get more theft than the other. I don't mind but I also shop at Sam's mostly over Wal-mart anymore.

The one I frequent does have a door checker. I always bag my stuff, they don't charge for bags. I have no issue showing my receipt but I do think it's silly if they are going to have so many self-checkout lanes. You trust me enough to allow me to check myself out but you still want to see the receipt? And like previous posters have said, they don't do a good job at it.

I wouldn't mind doing so if asked but no one has ever asked. There is no one stationed at the exit door at our Walmart. Self checkout is right by the door, so the person monitoring that would see me check out and leave anyway.

When asked at Wal Mart, I respond with, “are you accusing me of shoplifting?” They say no, so I keep walking.
I once read that it violates our right to privacy. Interesting take on it.
ETA Sometimes I just say no thank you and they look at me confused.

1. Canada - but I've never been asked to show it at our Walmart. I know for a fact another person in town has - because it was the self checkout, the receipt thing wasn't printing and he had paid. The self area cashier came running after him (after seeing him ring in his stuff) to provide proof he paid. He was also black. And that was his issue.
2. No stores here provide bags any more unless you pay for cloth bags. I walk out all the time with stuff not in a bag if I've forgotten to bring some with me.

I seldom shop at Walmart, but would be fine with showing my receipt. However, I have never been asked to show it.

I rarely shop at Walmart these days. If I do it's a quick stop for one or two items. I feel like in the past they have occasionally asked to see my receipt if I had a larger order, but I really do not remember as it's been so long.
Since it's so infrequent that I'm there, I do not recall if people walk out with unbagged items. I know it happens at other stores, I have done it if I only have one or two items. But in those cases I try to remember to keep my receipt with me and easily available.
I only watched a bit of the video but that seems excessive for a $25 pizza! Unless there is more to it that I didn't see.

There was a news story about this not too long ago and someone asked how is this different than Costco/BJs. At Costco/BJs you are buying a membership and have to abide by the warehouse rules one of which is show your receipt on the way out. I think consensus was that, technically, you are not legally required to show your receipt and Walmart employees have no right to detain you. However if it escalates and the police are called you can either be ticketed or arrested if the situation deteriorates.
If Walmart wants to institute this policy, they need to be consistent across stores and there has to be people specifically trained to deescalate if needed. But that isn't going to solve their theft problem. The people stealing full carriages of goods aren't even going to skip a beat when they blast by the receipt checker. A receipt checker is not a deterrent to these people.

Our local Walmart always has someone at the door but they don’t check everyone’s receipt. I’ve always been curious how they decide whose to look at and what they are looking for since they don’t seem to inspect it very closely.
Yesterday I was at Costco and they had two people asking to look at peoples cards as they got into the self checkout line. One of the people said that it was to compare pictures to the person in line. In the time that I was in that area I didn’t see them catching anyone who shouldn’t have been there so it seems like paying two extra people to do that is pointless.

At the Walmart I frequent they have always have a Nazi type person at one entrance/exit who insists on checking everyone's receipt. Now at the other entrance/exit it is hit or miss if someone is there and if they actually ask to look at your receipt.
About 2 years ago DH and I went through the self checkout and got stopped by an older lady manning the door. She asks to see our receipt which was annoying, but fine. At the bottom was listed the case of water we paid for and the case of water that accidently scanned twice and was removed by the man supervising the self checkout area. So there was the case of water at the bottom of our cart and a deleted item on the receipt. That woman for the life of her couldn't figured out the receipt. She couldn't seem to decide if we had actually paid for the case of water in our cart. We tried to explain the receipt to her, but she dragged us over to customer service. There the lady working looked at the receipt and declared yes we had paid for our case of water. As we were walking away I could still her declaring how she just didn't understand the receipt. DH who tends to be more patient than me even said if you are going to work the door you better be able to understand how to read a receipt.

It’s hit or miss on whether they have a receipt checker at WMs around here. We still have plastic bags readily available and I’ve found if everything is in a bag they don’t stop me.
I don’t really care either way, the only time I did get annoyed was when they stopped me and I said “the receipt is in that bag right there on the top, you can grab it” and she said no, they’re not allowed to take the receipt out of the bag. That annoyed me, they can’t grab the receipt right on top but they can pull open the bag and peek inside, wtf.

I think it depends a lot on the Walmart. There is one near me in an upscale area that is the nicest Walmart I have ever been in. They don't check receipts and don't have many products locked up. I've been in others that are the complete opposite.
A few years ago I flew to another town to meet with a client and needed to bring back a lot of documents. My associate and I went to the local Walmart in full business suits to buy a suitcase to transport the documents back to our office. They looked at us so suspiciously and went through every nook and cranny of that suitcase at checkout and again at the door.
I expected them to check the suitcase, but it was funny how thorough they were. Usually, I get better treatment in a suit--but maybe it was suspect in this circumstance?
Anyway, I don't really care if they check receipts as long as they aren't slowing me down.

I literally just got back from WM - we usually go on Sunday but went today. Our regular door lady wasn't there, so this one took extra time. I feel like they mostly look at the carts with stuff under the cart and hanging on the side, bc those are the items people either forget or on purpose dont scan and they are expensive (ie, drinks or toilet papers/paper towels, etc). This one seemed more thorough but we always have stuff under our cart or hanging on the sides, so it doesn't bother me.
at our WM last year, someone took off with a big ass TV. that surprised me bc I thought the parking lots also had cameras and could get the license plate pretty easy.

I just keep my receipt out and offer it to the door checkers. Sometimes they look at it, sometimes they don’t. But it’s their job and I don’t feel like being rude to them is good practice even if I don’t agree with having them there. I’m sure they get plenty of harassment on a daily basis.

It's a different world, and people need to get over being pissy about getting asked for a receipt, or scanning their own items. I'm tired of people losing their minds over it.
I have been asked, and they were polite in their request - which I think is ESSENTIAL! I feel it is possible to make a mistake scanning, and I would much rather be asked politely if there might be a problem, than getting thrown to the ground over it.
I use Scan and Go, so I scan with my phone, place in a tote, and then just scan my phone at self-checkout. Boom, done, fast. I always make eye contact with the self checkout people and ask "Am I OK?" - they usually say "Yes" and call me by my name, since I used the app, they have my info. I just feel better about checking in with them, because although I try very hard to make sure I have done things right, mistakes happen. Once in a while, they will check an item that I have stowed below, just to make sure it was included. Perfectly fine.

I almost always have my son with me and he loves to hold the receipt and hand it over, so I let him do it. They always draw a happy face on the receipt like they do at Costco. If I’m alone I don’t usually stop to show them my receipt and I’ve never been hassled or detained.
I buy the take and bake pizzas pretty frequently and never put them in a bag. I don’t want my pizza going sideways.

I rarely go to our Walmart, so not sure the policy there, but usually don't mind showing a receipt if they're efficient about it. If there's a long queue it will annoy me. I can't think of any store that asks regularly around here except Costco of course - and best buy. Although I did lug out tv a few months ago and the guy didn't bother asking - so even there it's very inconsistent.

I can't remember when I was last in a real Walmart. We shop the little grocery store only Walmart because it is 3 blocks from our home. The receipt checking person waves us on out of the store.
At Sam's the receipt person looks at the receipt and then randomly looks--but I have noticed the receipt states how many items were purchased. I believe the checker quickly counts how many items are in your cart.
Do I care? Not really--too much theft now.
