I can’t read that article. It looks like it’s behind a pay wall. But I did read it on a different site. Apparently she has a very rare form of pneumonia.

I hope they can get her better soon.
The no insurance has me kerflummoxed. I can't imagine she hasn't made a ton of money over the years with her fame. Unless her ex got a lot of money when they divorced or something. Or bad investments. Who knows, just struck me as odd.

I just looked her up on wikipedia. I didn't know she had gotten divorced.

How sad. I hope she pulls through!! I don’t understand the no insurance thing too.
We had tickets to the gymnastics events and I got to watch her in the 1984 Olympics in LA. She was amazing to watch.

Is it possible she has had serious health issues that make insurance very, very expensive? I’m not familiar with any endorsements or work she has done, I haven’t heard her name in years; but if you’ve had cancer insurance costs can be much more insane than they are for the rest of us.

This makes me sad for so many reasons. I sincerely hope she recovers from this illness.

I know she has done commentary at events for TV before. I don’t know how well that pays.

That’s really sad. I was in high school gymnastics when she won all those medals in the Olympics and she was such an inspiration because she was close in age to us then. I hope she is able to recover.

How sad! I hope she makes a full recovery. How scary! I'm surprised to hear that she is uninsured.

I think it is really strange and sad that she doesn’t have health insurance. I would have thought she was set financially. Perhaps she was given poor financial advice with investments when she did have money coming in. It makes me sad if she is struggling financially now, in addition to struggling with this unusual pneumonia. That will just add to her stress levels and that won’t help her get better.

Sad to see anyone sick and I hope she can overcome this beast.
I just looked up her net worth and several sites indicate she's worth 8 million.
Seems odd to me to not be able to afford health insurnace. They could apply now as one can not be denied for pre-existing conditions.

The fundraiser that her daughter posted has raised $65,000. If she’s worth over $8 million is someone posted why is there a fundraiser?

She could be self-insured if she is worth $8 million. So I don’t understand the GoFundMe account.

Just because someone has 2, 4, 8 million dollar worth doesnt mean they have that cash on hand. It could very well be her name and any organizations with her name. ETA and I am fully aware of how quickly medical expenses can add up. I was in the highest level ICU for 3 days post surgery and my amount was almost 500k. I owed about $30k after insurance and what not.

When she was an Olympic athlete, all USA athletes HAD to be “amateurs,” meaning that they could not be paid. They could receive no monetary payment for their sport while competing at the Olympic level. That changed in 1988 when athletes could be professionals. So, unlike current Olympic athletes, she wasn’t able to earn a living being a gymnast. Nor, at the time, were sponsorships the lucrative deals they are now, although, even now, for gymnasts, I don’t think corporate sponsorships are the same as for athletes who use things like shoes (think Nikes) or skis or other equipment that can be used recreationally in their sports in brands sold to the masses.

Her nephew was one of my graduate assistants a few years ago (really great kid!). He was with our office for two years, and IIRC she was getting divorced during his first year on the job. She was on “Damcing with the Stars” not too long after the divorce, and my GA was one of her guests for the final episode she was in.
I don’t remember all the details, but I think she was having health issues at the time, and I know she had financial setbacks after the divorce.
I hope she pulls through.

My understanding was that the Affordable Care Act prevented insurance companies from denying coverage or charging more if you have a pre-existing condition. I have never been asked questions about my health when choosing my health insurance during open enrollment each year and I buy my own insurance. It's now $1000 per month with a huge deductible but there were other options available with lower deductibles with a higher cost. If her income is low, she should qualify for the tax credit that makes insurance more affordable.

And even if she does have insurance, there is no guarantee that her hospital stay will be covered.

Sad to read about her being seriously ill and hospitalized. Certainly hope she is able to recover. She was always peppy and smiling. And yes she has been doing a commercial. Not sure although it could be ColonialPenn($9.95 a month) as mentioned above.

This is sad to hear. I hope she recovers. I remember being glued to the tv during the olympics. I was in awe of her! pantsonfire, that is a staggering and sobering amount to owe. Here I've been complaining about the $4000 I owe.

Here I've been complaining about the $4000 I owe. Sucky thing is it had to come out of my money I got from the insurance company. It would have been more but my lawyer got it down to that amount. Our insurance didn't cover accident caused by another (this was for the DUI). And is why ERs ask was this caused by anyone else or due to an accident because they (your insurance) will go after them. Anyway out of laying they will find.

We haven’t had to purchase insurance on our own (outside of work) for years and years. My last knowledge of this was MIL trying to insure herself and SIL and it was cost prohibitive. At the time they weren’t turned down but the premiums were absolutely insane with much less coverage than what we had. We pay the same as you, but for 2 of us, I’m sorry yours is so high. It’s the low(er) deductible plan but it’s the same deductible as the high deductible plan was just a few years ago.

This is no longer true. Thanks to the American Care Act (ACA) insurance premiums can only be based on age and zip code. linkI was shocked she doesn't have health insurance.

Not to mention that female athletes generally don’t garner the same kind of pay for anything that their male counterparts do, even now.

Gosh, this was shocking to hear. In my mind she's still that wide, square grinned bright eyed dynamo.
I hope she gets enough attention and support from her community and that she makes a full recovery, poor babe.
