That is terrifying! So glad you are ok!
Our neighbors front yard has a ginormous tree. I am constantly worried about something happening! It would crush our entire house.

How horrendous for your family! I was hit by a falling limb years ago and I still get nervous beneath trees. I'm so thankful you and the pets escaped without major injuries. I'll be praying that recovery will go as smoothly as possible. Please keep us posted!

Glad you guys made it out and have homeowners I insurance. One of our of Greatest concerns. We have had cut 30 plus trees taken down in the 5 years we have lived here. All pine trees, we lost a utility trailer during hurricane. There is one mammoths pine tree left that is healthy per the arborists. G

I'm truly shocked that we made it out alive. I thought we had prepared well for the snow/ice/windstorm until my husband, who was seated facing our picture window, said "there it goes!". I didn't know what he meant, but I shut my eyes and put my hands over my head, then everything was black and I was choking on insulation. Our huge old oak tree fell a foot to the right of where we were sitting and the roof came down on our heads. It took us 15 minutes to find and dig out the dogs. They were totally silent, but one was trapped under the coffee table and one was stuck behind the sofa and we are all fine. I truly cannot believe it. I'm thankful for so much--that the tree didn't hit our neighbors' houses, that it happened during daylight hours, that the power had already been out all day, that several of our neighbors were home . . . Our neighbors were so kind and let us and the dogs wait in their houses for the sheriff (all the fire departments were deployed and backlogged) and one lent us their SUV to slowly drive to my sister's tiny apartment where we're holed up with her and her two dogs. I didn't sleep at all last night and I'm so nauseated I can't eat. We probably won't hear from an insurance adjuster until mid-week due to all of the storm damage. We got the gas, water and electricity shut off with the help of the sheriff before we left. I'm worried because my husband wants to go over today and "secure things". I'm afraid the tree will shift and settle further plus, it's still below freezing. Ugh, I have to find a hotel that will take dogs until we can find an apartment and find an arborist and I don't know what all. I can't think straight and I don't want to go in and start pulling things out of the front rooms that don't have tree limbs poking through the roof until a professional assesses the situation, but I don't want to leave my husband to be foolhardy and be killed after surviving this. Thank you for listening to me ramble. I know we're facing an abundance of red tape and nonsense and details from now on and it's only stuff. I'm just so tired already. I'm so sorry you are going through this. I haven't read all the comments. I don't post here anymore but read the threads from time to time, mostly the scrapbook posts. i work for an insurance company. You should have ALE (additional living expenses) under you Homeowner policy, they can get you set up with a temp place with the dogs. If you have an agent in your area, reach out to them for help. Like others have said, thankful you both are OK and the dogs also made it out.

That sounds scary as hell. I’m glad all of you made it out okay. All your hubby can really do is get any really valuable paperwork and stuff out. Insurance should cover anything else.

I’m so sorry and so glad you all got out safely. We’re surrounded by tall trees and you have survived one of my worst fears. I’m sure the future is looking overwhelming right now but hopefully you’ll have the help and resources to get back into your home before too long. Big hugs!

Thank you everyone for your support and advice. This is all so surreal. I can't tell if I'm a pro at coping or if I'm in shock.
Quick update/non-update in my original post. Our neighbors know we made it out and are keeping an eye on things and we're not the only house in the neighborhood to suffer this fate. Fortunately, as far as I know, no one was killed, so that's a relief.

I am so sorry but happy everyone is safe, and I hope you get some solutions soon!
I used to love our wooded lot with towering oaks and pines in Raleigh. Until Hurricane Fran, that is. A tree fell on our house during the storm and fortunately caused very little damage, but the sounds of 30 trees falling, one by one, as we huddled in our bedroom riding out the storm were terrifying. Three or four could have done serious damage if they had fallen in a slightly different direction.
We have no trees close enough to damage our current house, and I am very happy about that as we can get some pretty light winds up here on the mountain.
