I'm truly shocked that we made it out alive.
I thought we had prepared well for the snow/ice/windstorm until my husband, who was seated facing our picture window, said "there it goes!". I didn't immediately know what he meant, but I instinctively shut my eyes and put my hands over my head, then everything was black and I was choking on insulation. Our huge old oak tree (150 feet?) fell a foot to the right of where we were sitting and the roof came down on our heads. It took us 15 minutes to find and dig out the dogs. They were totally silent, but one was trapped under the coffee table and one was stuck behind the sofa and we are all fine. I truly cannot believe it.
I'm thankful for so much--that the tree didn't hit our neighbors' houses, that it happened during daylight hours, that the power had already been out all day so we didn't have a fire, that several of our neighbors were home . . .
Our neighbors were so kind and let us and the dogs wait in their houses for the sheriff (all the fire departments were deployed and backlogged) and one lent us their SUV to slowly drive to my sister's tiny apartment where we're holed up with her and her two dogs. I didn't sleep at all last night and I'm so nauseated I can't eat. We probably won't hear from an insurance adjuster until mid-week due to all of the storm damage.
We got the gas, water and electricity shut off with the help of the sheriff before we left. I'm worried because my husband wants to go over today and "secure things". I'm afraid the tree will shift and settle further plus, it's still below freezing.
Ugh, I have to find a hotel that will take dogs until we can find an apartment and find an arborist and I don't know what all. I can't think straight and I don't want to go in and start pulling things out of the front rooms that don't have tree limbs poking through the roof until a professional assesses the situation, but I don't want to leave my husband to be foolhardy and be killed after surviving this.
Thank you for listening to me ramble. I know we're facing an abundance of red tape and nonsense and details from now on and it's only stuff. I'm just so tired already.
UPDATE 1/15/24 Thank you everyone for the well-wishes and advice. ❤️ Still no insurance adjuster or arborist due to demand, weather, weekend, holiday, etc. Freezing rain is predicted for tomorrow which will make everything worse, since the roof is open over every room but two. Still focusing on the fact that we're alive and together.

Holy crapoly. I'm so glad you guys made it out okay! I hope your husband will change his mind about going in. It would be awful for him to get hurt now after surviving that.
Tucking you up safely in my thoughts while you navigate a lot of moving parts.

I am so so sorry and wish you luck as you navigate what will, probably, be a long and arduous process.
I am so happy that both you, your husband and pets are all okay. Feel free to vent anytime.
It is so scary. I actually slept in my living room one night this week as we had wicked winds and I am surrounded by large trees. I figured if one came down, while not a great preventative, at least gave it a roof and floor to get through as to just a roof.

Oh gosh, you poor thing! You must be in shock still unsurprisingly. You were truly lucky and I hope that thought overtakes the shock and horror soon and that you’re back in your home sooner than you think.

WOW!!! Just WOW..How frightening....Glad you are OK.....Please don't let your DH go there until the situation is secured and deemed safe. The last thing you need is for him to be harmed. Again glad you and the fur babies are OK.

I am so very sorry this happened to you. What a nightmare.
Please call your insurance agent first thing. Even if no one can get out there right away, they can send the necessary people to remove the tree and secure the house. That doesn’t need to be your burden.
Sending best wishes your way.

I am so glad that all of you managed to escape injury. I’m sorry you have to deal with all of the stresses that go along with something like this. It’s a lot of work.

Oh I am so sorry. How incredibly scary! One of my good friends sent me a picture of the house across the street from hers where a tree fell into their house into their nursey. Their baby was in the crib. Thankfully, the baby was fine but HOLY *&$^.
Please know that what is important is that you all are ok!!! The rest will be a process for sure but just keep focusing on that you are all ok. Be kind to yourself.

That is so scary! So glad you are all ok.
Several years ago we had our Ash tree cut down. It was in our front yard and about eight feet from our bedroom. It was about 40+ feet tall and was around 50 years old. I LOVED that tree. It protected us from the afternoon sun in the summer and was natural air conditioning for the house. I could lie in my bed and watch the birds and wildlife.
Then we had a couple of bad storms and I started getting paranoid about it coming down and killing us in our sleep. It would have taken out half of the house if it had crashed. It had some rotten limbs so we had it taken down. I really miss that tree but it was a big relief not to worry about it anymore. It cost us a small fortune to remove it.

OMG, I’m so sorry! Glad everyone is safe!
Residence Inn by Marriott takes dogs. My SIL stays with them frequently. Plus, you get a small kitchen. Sounds like it’s going to be a while. Good luck!

Oh my. I can't imagine how frightening that was for you.
We recently stayed at a Home2 that was pet friendly, had a full kitchen and a nice setup. Save all your receipts as I would think your insurance would reimburse temp housing.

I am so sorry. Glad you and your pets are safe and have a place to go. I hope your husband is safe. I understand his need to go see what happened. Just remind him that you are worried about him and need him to just be safe and cautious.

OMG, that sounds terrifying.
A few years ago, my friend's bathroom fan caught on fire. The red tape and mess it took to get them back into their house was ridiculous. I hope your situation is less complicated! Hang in there.
