Once upon a time I was probably the biggest fan of HGTV ever. Until they seemingly got rid of all decor shows and I gave up on them.
Every once in a while I check for decor shows and over the years all I ever see is House Hunters and home demolishing renovation shows. I've been checking again the last few days and still no decor shows.
Just checked again and no decor shows. Starting at 4:30 they will be running House Hunters for 24hours tomorrow. Interrupted only by a couple of paid advertising shows and Castle Hunters. Then following the Rose Parade are hours (days?) of more real estate and demolition shows. After all these years of basically nothing but House Hunters aren't people tired of it and only it yet? Are the numbers really still that encouraging to them?
Someone needs to make a new channel for people to get their decor fix because it sure seems like HGTV just gave up the on the whole concept years ago and I can't be the only one left that would like to watch some decor shows, can I?

I hate it.

I stopped watching that channel years ago when they just kept re-airing years old episodes. There was one Canadian designer, Candace something or other whose show I loved. She was a tall and quirky blonde with such a great eye for design. Now the only show I really watch is Fixer Upper...new episodes coming soon. She remodels a home with her husband and has a shabby/country chic design style. But yeah, I really wish they would bring back more decor shows. I loved the inspiration and unique ideas many designers shared.

I'll have to check out Fixer Upper, I do like that style too. It was one of the shows listed in the next couple of days. It might be the only decor fix I can get even though it sounds like a demolition show and not as much decor.

I used to watch a channel called Create a couple of years ago. It was awesome. All types of shows for cooking, crafting, decorating, etc. Then one day it was gone. What a sad day that was for me. Melissa

Ah, I went and looked it up and it is licensed to our local public broadcasting station so they must have just stopped licensing it. Boo!

Our cable network in Singapore are giving a free trial of HGTV until May 2015 and I was so excited. After only one month watching I am getting bored with the constant repeats and Selling LA, Selling NY type of shows. I think most of the shows are older 2007 perhaps?
At the moment I am getting Cousins on Call, Property Brothers, Extreme Homes, House Hunters, Design on a Dime, The High/Low Project, Bang for your Buck, Rehab Addict? (don't know if that's the correct name) and the Selling shows.
I don't mind some of the renovation shows, I love Sabrina Soto, she is just so sweet. She is never bitchy and stressed like some others and I rather like Design on a Dime. I still enjoy House Hunters, I love seeing how much house you can get for the money in different parts of the US and I like to shout at the TV at the spoiled woman who wants everything and the lack of a huge laundry room in an otherwise perfect house is a deal breaker. I also love it when the paint colour is not to their liking and the agent says 'that's a quick fix' and they bite back and say 'yes, but more money and we want move-in ready' Haha, what house is ever really decorated exactly to ones taste?
I'm still having fun with it and I enjoy watching whist crocheting a very, very easy blanket

I know it was on TLC, but still a decorating show that I miss - Trading Spaces! Used to be so obsessed with that show. My college roommates and I always scheduled our study breaks around it, lol.
I used to love the British version too, can't remember what channel it was on, but we were able to watch it here in the States.

I know!! When my kids were little I used to watch Decorating Cent$ and I loved it. You could really do a lot for a little and I loved how they'd rearrange one room in the house with existing other furniture/decorations. There were tons of shows like that. Now it's all the House Hunters and while a little of that is fine, I hate so much of it.

I miss those shows too, but I'm guessing the reno/selling shows must get higher ratings.

I miss the crafty shows too. I am a pretty creative kind of girl, but very much self taught. There are always tips and hints that taught me something I didn't know (or didn't know I needed to know )

Oh come on Ladies...we are all very rich and can afford those big homes...right?
I miss the old shows that would redo a piece of furniture or take a room and use what you have and I miss Carol Duvall...wish they would run her series again ...

Not a big hgtv fan, but I used to catch the show where they came in and uncluttered the almost-hoarders' homes and remodeled. The before and after was amazing.....

The "House Hunter" type shows have to go. I know this has been said ad-nauseum on here, but the "Oh, I'm only 23, but I can't settle for less than all granite and marble and 5 bedrooms and 20 closets, and, and" are really, REALLY old. We CAN'T be the only ones who think this way? Who is watching this stuff?

I miss Candace Olson, David Bromstadt and Sarah Richardson (and Tommy!). Those shows were my favorite summer vacation watching until they all disappeared a few years ago.
At least Food Network continues actual cooking shows on the Cooking Channel.

Spinning off from the HGTV channel (although this same logic holds true for that) and discussing the Food Network, I'll admit that I love the competition cooking shows. Top Chef and Chopped are probably two of my very favorite shows--I love them. But can't we have balance? There's still plenty of room for cooking shows too. I don't know why they have to go way over to one end or the other--there's room for both!
And yeah, that Diners, Drive-ins and Dives show does nothing for me. My dh had that on the other day and I said "Can we please find something else? I feel like all I'm watching is Guy wrapping his big mouth around some huge sandwich over and over and over."

I enjoyed shows like $30 a Day, Duff Goldman's cake decorating show (I cannot think of the name of it), Unwrapped, and Throw Down. But then they started having all the cake and cupcake contest shows which led to the network being all competition shows during the evening. It's so freaking boring. PBS Create is so much better than the Food Network.

I too miss the old HGTV. All of this happened about the same time QVC decided crafting and scrapbooking wasn't as profitable as continually selling vacuums. I was at a Bernina event where Alex Anderson was the speaker...her show had just been cancelled on HGTV. She was upset. Said that the network didn't like the audience the shows were attracting and was changing the direction of the network hoping to attract a different set of viewers. Thus we have what is on now...I'm so sick of Love It or List It, Property Brothers, etc. I loved Carol Duval and the decorating shows. As far as Create TV...it is PBS...I liked it a lot but can't get it now that we have Direct instead of Cox.

I miss those shows too, but I'm guessing the reno/selling shows must get higher ratings. See, I have a theory about this... When all the shows were about decorating and crafts, a new show about house-hunting would have attracted lots of viewers -- it's new, different, people are curious, etc. So ratings for that new show are high. Thus network says, "Look how many people are watching this. We need more shows like this." Then ALL the shows are like that. So all the shows have same ratings. And network smugly says, "See, we gave the people what they wanted." Hummmppff. What we need is some daring producer to create a decorating show and start the stampede in the opposite direction.

Me, too! I used to run into the living room and get comfy every Friday night at 7PM to watch all of the new design show episodes. I don't watch HGTV anymore at all, unless I run across a House Hunters Renovation show.

I really miss decorating shows too. I loved Design on a Dime and Decorating Cents, I was also a fan of Christopher Lowell. I like getting ideas for how to change my decorating inexpensively. I miss those shows. I get tired of seeing shows about houses in countries I can never afford to buy LOL

Candice Olson on HGTV
Good News! It appears that Candice Olson is still on HGTV. Bad News - I can't figure out when. You can watch episodes on the HGTV website. I agree with everyone about there being too many real estate shows.

I think it's time we took the bull by the horns and started bombarding them with emails demanding a better mix of shows. Let them know we need a better mix of programming. I miss all the shows mentioned especially Carol Duvall.
Does es anyone remember the woman that had the quilting show? Can't think of her name but she inspired me to try my first quilt.

I like Property Brothers and don't mind Love It or List It because I like to see how the existing homes are renovated and redecorated, but I just can't get into House Hunters/House Hunters International at all. They seem to run that show all the time when I have a little down time at night and no energy to do anything else. I need to remember to program the DVR to record the shows I'd rather watch.
