I miss all those decorating and crafty shows: Kitty Bartholomew, Joan Steffand, Shari and Matt (Room by Room), and Designing for the Sexes (can't think of his name) AND, I miss the gardening shows, too. Think Rebecca Kolls, Paul James, even Susie Cuelho (sp?), and the guy who met people at the garden center and re-did their yard in a weekend.... ETA: My DH was not so secretly in love with Amy Matthews the kitchen and bathroom renovator. Well heck, so was I! Michael Payne was the guy on Designing for the Sexes. Liked that show too and Room by Room. Thanks for that Link to Christopher Lowell's page, jonda1974.

I am NOT a yard person. Not even a tiny little bit, but do you remember the show where they redid the front of the house? Curb something or another? I liked that show a lot. Yes! Curb Appeal. I forgot it. Another of our favorites. When we lived in town, we re-did our front yard because of that show.

Oh I would love some gardening shows we need to redo a few small areas and I would love some ideas. I guess I need to search on pinterest.
Several have mentioned blogs on here - are there any you recommend? I need to look at a few as I need some ideas to freshen things up a bit.

I enjoy shows about things I might actually be able to do - physically and economically. I think the property brothers are creepy. I don't have cabe so it's all moot.

When I was searching last night I learned they have at least 4 versions of House Hunters. It's ridiculous. There's the original House Hunters, House Hunters International (which I knew about), Celebrity House Hunters, and the one that combines real estate with demolition, House Hunters Renovation. I'm sick of real estate shows and demolition shows. Give us some decor! More than that! They just don't have the word house hunters in the title - but there's Hawaii Life, castle Hunters, beachfront bargain hunt, there was an Alaska one, there's a 'big sky' one, Tiny House Hunters, there was an Island Hunters one...

Oh yeah, I did see Castle Hunters last night forgot about that one. Holy cow I didn't know about all the others though. They should just rename it HHTV, I mean that is their focus now.

I can't stand how unrealistic some of the shows are. What they are quoting for $ and time to revamp a home are completely unrealistic.
A normal family and contractor cannot revamp and entire home in 6 weeks for $50,000. Sorry - it's more like 6 months.

I miss the decorating show era - Christopher Lowell, Lynette Jennings, Trading Spaces, Design on a Dime, Designing for the Sexes, the show that did the color wheel. So many good shows And yes, even bad Trading Spaces was/is better then what they have now!

Earlier this year I posted about an online channel - The Design Network. They have many of the type of shows that HGTV has gotten rid of. It's been the best alternative I've found so far. As for HGTV, I now DVR the HH INternational shows. Then I watch them later, fast forwarding through all the garbage, because I just want to see the houses. I loved Candance Olsen, as well as Sarah Richardson. Sarah does have a new show - during the daytime only. And it is pretty much using the same stupid formula they all use: look at 3 houses, demolish a room or two, show a bit of the design work, then have a final reveal. At least her design work is good, but it is the same old, same old. Plus, there is no Tommy! Off to check that out! Thanks for sharing, again. I must have missed it the first time.

I still can't figure out why Poker Tournaments are on the Travel Channel! I also think TLC needs to be changed to the Religion or Drama channel.
Property Brothers and any other shows those two do drive me nutty. I do like Love It or List for the most part and HHI. But yes it has lost a lot of the old good ones. I used to LOVE Decorating Cents! Didn't they use to have one that was similar to Trading Spaces or is that what it was called? And for some reason I can't remember the yard sale one. Where they had to sell some stuff and then they would redecorate while they were selling stuff?

Queer Eye was on Bravo! Totally miss that show. Speaking of Food Network, when I was in college they would air Good Eats at 11 pm followed by Unwrapped. It was my favorite block of tv to watch before bed. I credit Alton Brown with teaching me most of my cooking techniques. If I didn't have to see another Diners, Drive-ins and Dives I would be so happy. Guy Fieri is rage inducing. I appreciate what he does for small, local businesses but there is only so many times I can watch him take the train to FLAVA TOWN. Me too! I learned pretty much all I know about cooking from watching Good Eats! It's on Cooking Channel now, and I'm tempted to start recording the shows again. When we had cable I had recorded and saved all of the episodes I wanted, but lost them when we switched to DirecTV. I actually prefer to watch Guy's Big Bite - I like seeing HIM do recipes, and my DH LOVES his backyard kitchen!

Not a big hgtv fan, but I used to catch the show where they came in and uncluttered the almost-hoarders' homes and remodeled. The before and after was amazing..... It was called "Neat" and I loved it, too! Great tips for organization.

I really miss his show too. They did him dirty. Here is his Facebook Page.
He seems to be a good person, and family man. I used to love to watch the decorator shows and learned a lot from them, as well as the gardening shows. Loved Gardening by the Yard with Paul James. I met him and had my picture made with him at a Home Show in Savannah one year. Maybe one day HGTV will wake up and realize that they are losing viewers with the choices that they are making. They should have a more varible line up that would appeal to all viewers. The need to just change the name of the channel to House Hunters. I have seen enough homes and more than enough renos.

I really miss decorating shows too. I loved Design on a Dime and Decorating Cents, I was also a fan of Christopher Lowell. I like getting ideas for how to change my decorating inexpensively. I miss those shows. I get tired of seeing shows about houses in countries I can never afford to buy LOL I miss all these and Candace Olsen too! I miss the old food network also, too many competition shows. It used to be real cooking and Iron Chef (the orginal) loved those. History channel is no longer history either, it's pretty much American Pickers 24/7. Bleh.

MTV used to play music videos...I feel like a dinosaur. Oh they still do... From 5:00am to 7:00am when no teenager or young adult would ever be up to watch them. I'll never understand this.

The show I loved was "If Walls Could Talk". They showed you old homes and talked about the past owners and what was found in walls, under floors, etc. when they were restoring the old houses. I really liked that show.

There was a segment on Design on a Dime, I think it was, where they went to a home and just re-arranged the furniture and accessories in the homeowners house. They would take a rug out of one room, the couch out of another, the art out of another, pull a throw from the linen closet, etc and put together a remarkably designed and cohesive room. I was so inspired by that segment. Now it's all shopping.

I'm feeling so nostalgic reading this thread. Obviously HGTV puts on what sells and the current market must be for what that are producing. I wish they would at least put different shows of home shopping on. Love it or List is exactly the same show whether is it #1or #2. Oy!

I miss the early days of Trading Spaces. Then it got ridiculous. But with what's on now....I'd even take the later TS. I hardly watch HGTV anymore. It's such manufactured drama for drama's sake. Why must every couple house shopping have exactly opposite tastes? Why must every renovation show hit some huge "unexpected" snag that costs a fortune and drives the cost up so much more? It's so stupid and unbelievable. Surely someone out there bought a house without major drama. This is my problem with pretty much all TV these days. DH and I were just pining away for the old days of A&E, the History Channel, the Biography Channel, etc. TLC is beyond a joke and so far off the rails of its beginnings. All the "reality" TV (manufactured drama) and competition shows (full of more manufactured drama) have ruined just about every channel out there. It's why we ditched cable-there is next to nothing on that is worth watching. But someone's watching, or the shit shows would have died a quick death. And just look at all the long and frequent Real Housewives, Kardashians, Kate whatsherface, and Duggar threads that are never far from the first page right here.

And the manufactured drama isn't even all that interesting. It's the same plot line every single time. Flip or flop really bugs be - they've been doing this for a while, but they are always shocked to find out that some issue pops up and will cost more than they planned. Oh no, will they be able to sell the house and still make a profit? Of course they will, just like the last 15 houses they've flipped.
After you've flipped about three houses, I'd think they would get the idea.

So, I tried to watch an episode of Beachfront Bargain last night. The only reason this one appealed to me, is that it was somewhat local, and curiosity got the best of me. The whiny voice of the wife made me want to turn it off within 5 minutes.
But the worst, was the husband who kept saying "The house is pink, the house is pink" 20 million times. And every time the agent had to tell him "you can paint it. It's just a color." And then the wife started to whine about one house being "unfurnished." Maybe it's different in other places, but how often do you buy a house furnished? And yes, the pregnant pauses, and the made up drama is just over the top. I was finished before I began.
