I think the house hunter shows are very lost cost to produce. They don't have to build a set, buy materials, etc. They could probably whip together an episode in a few days if they wanted to.
Candice, the 7 layers of design guy, etc. all take months to make an episode.

I enjoy the house hunting shows, both here an abroad, but can't stand any of the ones where houses are ripped apart. Looking at the guts of a house is like looking at the guts of a dead animal to me. Not going to do that. I'd love to see Candice back. And David.

I think it's time we took the bull by the horns and started bombarding them with emails demanding a better mix of shows. Let them know we need a better mix of programming. I miss all the shows mentioned especially Carol Duvall. Does es anyone remember the woman that had the quilting show? Can't think of her name but she inspired me to try my first quilt. Could it be Alex Anderson mentioned above? I miss some of the really old decorating shows too.

Just Found the website and she has lots of videos on youtube.

I only want to see the ends of the demo/reno shows for the finished product.

I know it was on TLC, but still a decorating show that I miss - Trading Spaces! Used to be so obsessed with that show. My college roommates and I always scheduled our study breaks around it, lol. I used to love the British version too, can't remember what channel it was on, but we were able to watch it here in the States. I hated trading spaces, but I LOVED Changing Rooms! I watched it on the BBCA channel, that and Ground Force which was the same concept, just gardens. I still want Lawerence Llewlyn Bowen to come decorate my entire house. I miss that show so much, I wish there was some way to watch it still.

Once upon a time I was probably the biggest fan of HGTV ever. Until they seemingly got rid of all decor shows and I gave up on them. Every once in a while I check for decor shows and over the years all I ever see is House Hunters and home demolishing renovation shows. I've been checking again the last few days and still no decor shows. Just checked again and no decor shows. Starting at 4:30 they will be running House Hunters for 24hours tomorrow. Interrupted only by a couple of paid advertising shows and Castle Hunters. Then following the Rose Parade are hours (days?) of more real estate and demolition shows. After all these years of basically nothing but House Hunters aren't people tired of it and only it yet? Are the numbers really still that encouraging to them? Someone needs to make a new channel for people to get their decor fix because it sure seems like HGTV just gave up the on the whole concept years ago and I can't be the only one left that would like to watch some decor shows, can I? m I have the same problem with the Food Network. They have maybe two hours a day of actual cooking shows (midday) and the rest of the day is competition shows (mainly Chopped reruns) and the entire evening . Is Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. I hate it. I have the SAME issue with Food Network. I used to watch it all the time but now it's all competition shows, which I hate. I don't mine DDD but not 24/7.

I'll be honest, I got so SICK of trading spaces - I think that's the title. The decorating became ridiculous as they tried to think of something new to do. I'm not crafty and am not going to transform a flea market find into anything. I used to like the show where they recreated a designer room on a budget. But most of the other decorating shows were pretty stale. I'm sure it's a pendulum and will swing back again.

Yeah - I like Triple D when I'm in the mood - but crikey - you have eleventy billion chefs with shows, can't we see some of THEIR re-runs? And I LOVED Chopped when it first came on, and still watch it occasionally, but I'm kind of sick of it because it's the only thing on over the weekend! The only shining star is "The Kitchen" and I record that.

I miss the early days of Trading Spaces. Then it got ridiculous. But with what's on now....I'd even take the later TS. I hardly watch HGTV anymore. It's such manufactured drama for drama's sake. Why must every couple house shopping have exactly opposite tastes? Why must every renovation show hit some huge "unexpected" snag that costs a fortune and drives the cost up so much more? It's so stupid and unbelievable. Surely someone out there bought a house without major drama.

the 7 layers of design guy, Loved Christopher Lowell! Loved him! One of my favorites. I loved his style and the way he broke it down to show how easy it was. And The Designer Guys. I loved their style too. I can't remember if they were on HGTV or some other channel but they were among my very favorites. And Lynette Jennings. She was one of the first I used to watch way before there was an HGTV and she was all there was. Where have all the designers/decorators gone? Where are they now?

I loved Lynette Jennings, Christopher Lowell and Candace Olsen...Heck, I miss all of the decorators. I learned something from all of them, even the designs I didn't like.
Fixer Upper is a definitely a new love of mine.

I have the same issues. I think they need to give some of my favorite design bloggers tv shows. (Not that all of them would do it.) Wouldn't it be lovely to sit down and listen to Myquillen (the Nester) tell us it doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful, but here's some pretty arrows to help? Or Copy Cat Chic redo a designer room on a budget? Or just listen and watch Victoria Elizabeth Barnes because she's hilarious and I could watch her all day? How about some pretty interiors from Young House Love?
I know not every decorating blogger would translate well to tv or would want a show, but there's a huge untapped potential here.

Thanks for those links. I've been looking at them and was reminded of Kitty Bartholemew. She was one of the first I used to watch. She was on the Home Show before she had her own show. I loved her too! Going back to peruse those links and see where they take me.

I reallly enjoyed it at first, but then, once it was like "We have a $25k renovation budget and want you to gut the house" or "Your entire basement needs to be fixed so that sewer doesn't back up and the ceiling doesn't fall in" and the homeowner is all "but I NEED that walk in closet!!"

She gave me permission to just get it done and not worry about how it's supposed to be done. I guess tv decor is over and it's all about the blogger now?

It wasn't really a design show per se, but I totally loved "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy." I always loved how appreciative the subjects were when the guys were done with him. And that's where Ted Allen got his start! And who didn't love Carson Kressley! (I'm sure there were quite a few who didn't, but I loved him!)

The "House Hunter" type shows have to go. I know this has been said ad-nauseum on here, but the "Oh, I'm only 23, but I can't settle for less than all granite and marble and 5 bedrooms and 20 closets, and, and" are really, REALLY old. We CAN'T be the only ones who think this way? Who is watching this stuff? I think we keep having the same conversation because we are so gosh darn tired of having the same show stuffed down our throats over and over again packaged under different names. For a while, the DIY channel took over what HGTV stopped doing. They had all kinds of decorating and crafting specific shows. It was nice. But now the DIY channel has moved to other types of shows which focus mainly on house renovations-not decorating so much as the tearing down and rebuilding of the homes. Surely, there is a happy medium in there somewhere where we can get the decorating and crafting shows along with the renovations??

Queer Eye was on Bravo! Totally miss that show.
Speaking of Food Network, when I was in college they would air Good Eats at 11 pm followed by Unwrapped. It was my favorite block of tv to watch before bed. I credit Alton Brown with teaching me most of my cooking techniques. If I didn't have to see another Diners, Drive-ins and Dives I would be so happy. Guy Fieri is rage inducing. I appreciate what he does for small, local businesses but there is only so many times I can watch him take the train to FLAVA TOWN.

Oh my yes! Why all the drama? I just roll my eyes when Johnathan on Property Brothers expresses surprise (yet again) that a wall he wanted to remove was load bearing. Hey, Johnathan, buddy, if you want to remove all the walls, at least one of them will be currently holding up the house. Just a tip so you aren't shocked next time. And Love or List it people, if there is a bunch of structural crap wrong with your house, you'll need it fixed no matter if you sell it or not. And maybe you give up the $3k tv and $6K in new furniture if the walk in closet is so freaking important? Also, I don't know if tv has given up on decor because the bloggers are doing it better, but it feels more like the bloggers have the attention because they are filling a need the tv isn't. I'm glad they are there. On my bad days I just feel rediculously sad I don't live in a pretty house with pretty things, but mostly I can look at what they are doing and get ideas. If it weren't for the decor bloggers I wouldn't have had the courage to do a red and turquoise scheme for my sitting room. Which is seriously ironic since it seems none of them have the courage to put real color anywhere but on a pillow or easily changed picture frame.

When I was searching last night I learned they have at least 4 versions of House Hunters. It's ridiculous. There's the original House Hunters, House Hunters International (which I knew about), Celebrity House Hunters, and the one that combines real estate with demolition, House Hunters Renovation. I'm sick of real estate shows and demolition shows. Give us some decor!

I miss all those decorating and crafty shows: Kitty Bartholomew, Joan Steffand, Shari and Matt (Room by Room), and Designing for the Sexes (can't think of his name)
AND, I miss the gardening shows, too. Think Rebecca Kolls, Paul James, even Susie Cuelho (sp?), and the guy who met people at the garden center and re-did their yard in a weekend....
ETA: My DH was not so secretly in love with Amy Matthews the kitchen and bathroom renovator. Well heck, so was I!

OP, I couldn't agree more, I miss the HGTV of yore. And I am SICK to death of House Hunters, except for the Tiny version, which I am currently addicted to.
Add me to the list that LOVED Candace Olsen, Divine Design. If I ever win the lottery, she will design every room in my new house! That show knocked my socks off every time!
Another show I loved, but I don't think it lasted long - I can't remember the name and haven't read through the whole thread so I hope I'm not repeating anyone - was where they chose an "Inspiration Room" that cost a skajillion dollars, and they would recreate it for $500 or something crazy like that.

I too miss these channels. I used to love HGTV, Food network, Discovery, TLC, the travel channel and even the SyFy channel no longer shows syfy shows but stupid reality crap. The history channel as well. We recently moved and have multiple PBS channels and they have craft shows including knitting/crochet, beading and scrapbooking and a few others as well I love them - some are new and some are older but since I have never seen them I am just loving them.
I would love to find a channel that had crafts and cooking - I really miss Alton Brown and several of the shows that they used to show that actually taught you how to cook or real recipes. It seems Pioneer Woman is the only one - I like her but would like to see more. I also liked the decorating shows and would love to see a few of those again. The travel shows where they showed you places you may never go were also a lot of fun. I would love to see some science shows as well. I also wish there were some good syfy series it seems the closest we get now are the Marvel comic ones. I am so sick of reality shows and have been for years. That and the comedies that are out are so stupid I just can't bring myself to watch many of them.

I am NOT a yard person. Not even a tiny little bit, but do you remember the show where they redid the front of the house? Curb something or another? I liked that show a lot.
