And now I want British pies.
No wimpy 2-3 inch deep American pies.
I want a 6-9 inch deep savory pie.
Sigh.
and all the chefs are so polite and nice.

What I am most intrigued by are the ovens with the doors that slide inside when you open them.

This thread just reminded me that I want to go watch the first few episodes. I've seen it but didn't watch it at all until half way through last night's episode. I like it and now I need to go catch up. Thanks for reminding me.

The Bake Off? Great series isn't it! Which series are you watching? Yes, it is a contest. Here it is simply called the Great British Baking Show, according to my online guide. A number of people from around GB, if I am reading the accents correctly, baking under a lovely tent. I just happened upon it and was transfixed. I immediately set up my TIVO to record the series. I have a hard time watching American cooking contests because the judges tend to be mean for the cameras, and the contestants are prone to weeping. This just seemed so, well, civil. And I love pies. Love them. So this was a great episode to tune in to. What I am most intrigued by are the ovens with the doors that slide inside when you open them. I noticed that immediately too! How brilliant. No having to stand out from the oven while trying to place things carefully inside.

I love this show and now I have my DH hooked too! It's an interesting twist on all the baking/chef reality shows. Before watching this, my only exposure to British cooking shows was Gordon Ramsey...I like the Great British Baking show much better!

Paul is a bit of a sex symbol and Mary is just a legend. Funny story.....her grandchildren go to a school near me......she was at the school for some reason last summer and my friend's son (age7) came home saying the Queen had visited that day

I think that one of things I like the best is that they are home cooks, rather than professionals. Maybe that is one reason they are less histrionic than many on the American shows - it is a hobby, rather than a livelihood.

Oh the judges, one in particular has been known to be very "friendly" towards a co- presenter of the American Baking Competition

I LOOOOVE that show. I spent a good amount of time on youtube one day watching them all, I learned so much about baking and it was just so nice.
They tried the same show with America and I liked it too but I guess it didn't get good ratings as they never repeated it. NO glitz I guess, but I just loved the format of it.

The Great British Bake Off is a favourite in our house. Mary Berry always impresses me, she's 79 and looks fab, still producing cookbooks. Last time I heard her Mum is still alive aged 105.

I think her Mum died about three years ago if I remember rightly. She said something about it when she was on " Who do you think you are" She said she wouldn't want to live that long. Her mother was 105 as you say.

"Hollywood is married to Alexandra Hollywood and they have a son.[3][10] In 2013, Hollywood's affair with fellow The American Baking Competition judge Marcela Valladolid was made public. His wife was considering filing for divorce, but the couple have since reconciled.[10] Hollywood expressed his remorse on The Jonathan Ross Show." Wiki

You know what I really love also is the British Sewing Bee and I can't watch series 2 yet, and it's quite frustrating to me. Another beloved show that after watching series 1 I couldn't wait to see the next one and now can't find it. That Patrick is a handsome man.

You know what those two shows have in common, polite, calm, knowledgeable judges, great contestants. The "in your face, shouting" tv programmes are really a turnoff.

OMG! I have a PBS app on Apple TV and it not only allows you to watch whole episodes, but there is a 3 minute segment just of Baked Alaskagate! Priceless.
