I was just reading the reviews on Amazon to a set of colored pencils that the author recommends to use with this coloring book. This is what one reviewer said... "The pencils are as expected and great with the adult Secret Garden color book." That's good enough for me! Another reviewer said that she bought them at Michael's using the 40% off coupon. That's also what I'm doing! AMAZON link to Staedtler Ergo Soft Triangular Coloured Pencils

I have a friend who bought me, herself, and another friend a copy a couple months ago (she sent them to us in the mail as we're 600 miles apart) - We've been coloring the same images and uploading them to a fb album to share with each other. It's been a ton of fun.
For me, the paper quality is fine, it has a bit of a "tooth" to it and it seems like decent quality. Of course it isn't going to be the same quality as actual drawing paper you get at an art store (I think that's what some people expect judging by some reviews). I don't really like that the pages are printed double sided, but the designs often span two pages, so I suppose it was unavoidable. I'm using Prisma colored pencils because everything else I have tried bleeds through onto the backside image (though it doesn't get on the opposite page). My friend had good luck with some metallic gel pens she picked up at the office store though.

I actually had these in my Amazon for a while. I wasn't worried about them being out of stock since I think they'll be Christmas gifts. Originally they were going to be Easter gifts, but that didn't work out. Barbara, you mentioned the Animal Kingdom book. Is that one just as good? I know it's not by the same author--her other book is Enchanted Forest and now I'm trying to decide whether I should get that one or the Animal Kingdom instead. Or maybe both--I bet my dh wouldn't mind one as a gift too. Cindy, did you have issues with the paper, bleeding through and all that? If not, what did you use?

Michael's had a wonderful, very elaborate Easter Egg coloring book like these. She loves those coloured pencils! She has a couple other coloring books and she packs them often when we have a long drive. She says that the triangular shape is noticeably better than the traditional pencil shape and she loves how smoothly they color. Highly recommended.
And, I bought them with a 50% off Michael's coupon...SCORE!

If you like animals, Animal Kingdom is lovely and worth getting - 12 different beautiful illustrations to colour in. I haven't tried this one though so don't know about the quality of the paper compared to Secret Garden....but I guess that the results vary anyway depending on the type of pencils used. Buy all three books!!

I ordered them on Amazon the day the first article came out but they are still back ordered. Her website says they have a domestic printer so it won't take very long. I may check at B&N and Michael's the next time I'm in town though.

Love the first one. I will see how this goes with coloring. I haven't done it in a long time. If all goes well, I will be getting that first one you linked.

I love the look of this book. I am going "scrapping" tonight and need something to do. I have a group of friends that started getting together years ago, when we actually all scrapped. Nobody really does anymore, but we still get together and eat and drink and drink and drink. I have decided that I need something to keep my hands occupied so that I drink less, and this looks like the perfect thing. Doesn't sound like I'll be able to get one in time for tonight, but maybe I can find something similar to color in the meantime.
As far as the paper quality, while the colors won't be as vivid, I think I will stick with colored pencils to avoid any bleeding.

THOSE of you who are using colored pencils… make sure you get blender pen. A blender pen makes the pencils look really smooth and blend the colors together.

The artist is one half of a local super-couple. Her DH is one of the entrepreneurs behind Brewdog beer which seems to be taking over the world at the moment. She has designed some of their labels.
It's funny how colouring in for grown ups has taken off in such a big way, but it's not a new thing of course as rubber stampers have been stamping images (or printing digital ones) and colouring them in for pleasure for years. It's very relaxing.

DD has been bringing home coloring pages like that from preschool in the last week or so! She doesn't get enough time in school to finish them there because they're so intricate, but once she gets home she works on them here.

OMG! I need this now! I love to color, and the designs are so beautiful. Does anyone know if Michael's carries the pens/pencils that she uses? I have watercolor pencils in my stash…I wonder if those would be good??? I know I bought Prisma pencils- which were mentioned- at Hobby Lobby a bunch of years ago. I'm not sure about Stadtler. I know Michaels carries some of that brand, and what they carry prob varies by store.

Prisma pencils are fab. Blend with blending stumps and Sansodor for a seamless fusion of colours. There was a really good tutorial on Hero Arts a few years ago, and the artist just worked the area over and over to achieve blending. The pencils are so soft and highly pigmented, you can't go wrong.
I'll see if I can find a link ...
Here you go. It isn't the one I was thinking of but it is the same lady and it's a good one.

And on a side/funny note, I have always loved to color. The night before my wedding 26 years ago, my sister and I sat at my grandmother's table and colored the evening away. It is one of my favorite moments.

Thanks so much for linking this artist, Johanna Basford!
I spent a few hours perusing her website and love her work.
I love that she's found a great niche and wants to be great at what she does while ignoring the critics. If Van Gogh and Monet had listened to their critics and either stopped painting profusely or changed their style, they would not be as admired and loved as they are today. Van Gogh never sold a painting in his lifetime and died without knowing commercial success. It's amazing what people can accomplish when they do it for themselves and not for recognition or "success".
I'm inspired that Johanna got her favourite clients, like Starbucks, by doing what she loved, posting her artwork on the internet and sending her dream clients custom samples.
I also wish Cult Pens existed in the US, love that website!

I think I have this book. I have had it for a long time. My daughter found some really cool coloring books for adults at Craft warehouse. We love to color. She also got these crayola twistables colored pencils. they are a cross between a crayon and a colored pencil. I liked them so much I bought 2 sets of them. I also love gel pens.
