I am so sorry! I've never had shingles, but a close friend had them on his face. He was in terrible pain. He said it was in his nose and mouth too. I wanted to take him dinner because I knew he felt too badly to go out and he said he was so miserable that he couldn't even eat.
And from him, that was shocking. He's the guy at any meal saying, "You gonna finish that?" or "Can I taste that?" as he hovers with his fork ready to grab whatever it is. It was so expected from him that I bought him one of those extending forks so he could steal from everyone's plate while remaining in his own chair. For him to refuse food, I know he was in a terrible amount of pain.
I hope you get relief quickly and that it doesn't get into your eye.

Oh Elaine, I'm so sorry! My dad had shingles and ended up in the hospital because he had them in his ear. They are nothin to mess around with. It sounds like you're in good hands. I hope you start healing quickly. Hugs.

I had it around my left eye a few years ago. Went up onto my scalp, following the line of the nerves there. Make sure you see an ophthalmologist or other eye specialist. It can be very damaging to the eye. I still get a tingling/twitch in the nerves around my eye every so often, and the scarring to the skin around my eye has not gone away. Good luck with yours. Yes! The are calling in an ophthalmologist right now and won't release me until he examines me and gives his approval. It has gone up to my hairline and is spreading along that one nerve towards the back of my scalp. The irony being that I was being examined by several ophthalmologists for 8 hours on Friday before this started. I am going for a Guinness Record of hours spent in one week with eye doctors. I'm so sorry you're having all these issues. But your last line made me laugh. BTW - how are your eyes? beside the shingles?

Shingles stink. Ask David Letterman. Are we making you feel better or worse?

There is a shingles shot available for anyone over 60. I scheduled my shot for the day after I turned 60 so insurance would cover it. Feel better. My doctor said that some insurance companies will cover the shot at age 50 and said that she recommends getting it then if it is covered.

There is a new shot in Canada coming. I talked to my GP about it and she said it's due out in 2 years? She said it will mean people age 50 can get it. I have been trying to get the 60 year old one for a couple of years and she keeps saying no. She said the new one is what she will get and I will get it the day I turn 50!

I am so sorry. It's the worst pain I've ever been in and I have severe RA. I'm glad yours was diagnosed quickly. I had a yeast infection which morfed into shingles. I had a line along my lower belly and along the inside ofmy thighs to my butt. It took them six months to figure it out. I go to a teaching clinic and they'd never seen shingles before. They gave me Acyclovir 800 mg. and it cleared up in a week or two.
I'll keep you in my prayers and hope this is over soon with no lasting damage. Hugs too!

!! Glad you are at the hospital getting the best of care. I am sure they will give you Valtrex to ease the symptoms.
I have had 2 outbreaks on my face, but fortunately both were "light" cases--well, compared to what others have had, I am calling mine light. I hope your case turns out to be light.

I'm so sorry. I've had shingles, but luckily it was a mild case. Mine occurred at the same time (and in the same area) that I had kidney stones. It's interesting that yours is close to an area that you are already having issues with.
They say stress can be a big factor with an outbreak, and you've certainly had your share of that. Since it just started, I hope that an antiviral will keep it from becoming too bad for you. Hugs...

BTDT. Started on my eyebrow and it spread up into my scalp and down onto my eyelid.
Be sure to get pain meds along with the sntiviral. They also gave me an antibiotic ointment to keep the mess from getting infected.
They told me if it shows up on the tip of your nose that is a very bad sign and to go straight back to the ER.
I hope you feel better soon and have s mild case.

That is good that they are taking it seriously. I am impressed that they want the specialist to see you first. That is not something you want to take any chances with. I am so sorry you are going through this. I hope the doctors get it figured out and you have a fast recovery. It makes me want to ask about a shingles vaccine now for me and my family. That sounds scary and painful!

Been there done that twice; 2nd time was on my neck and moving quickly to my face. On the upside you've caught it early enough to get the anti-virals.
Hope you get some answers and some relief soon.

Has anyone had shingles that is under age 60 or age 50? I have asked for the shot as well and was told I was too young. My mom had it and I am paranoid I will get it before I am old enough for the shot.

Oh no, just what you need.... I hope you get the anti-viral med in time to lessen the severity of your case. I had shingles on my face, from the top of my scalp , down towards my cheek to my chin, but not near my eye. It hurt and looked awful, but it wasn't nearly as bad as the poison ivy I had! Dh had a bad case on his head near his ear. Hope yours retreats quickly. Hugs, and prayers for healing.

My mom had it and I am paranoid I will get it before I am old enough for the shot. I was 33 the first time and 41 the 2nd (I'm 46 now). The first time I was shocked, the 2nd, I would have been less shocked had the GP told me I was pregnant. I was convinced it was an old person disease and that you certainly never got it more than once. My allergist recommended that I get the shingles vaccine as I seem to have a predisposition to getting them. I've not done it yet but keep meaning to ask the GP about it.

Ocular shingles is just so unfair even w/o your eye issues. Now it's just downright awful. I'm so sorry, Elaine. Sounds like you're being treated w/fine care, though. Do call your eye clinic and report this to them. You probably already thought of that. I'm wishing you huge relief. That it just started and you caught it now means that they can put you on the anti-virals that when started early in the shingles process can reduce the rate of spread and the amount of time it'll take to heal. Take good, loving care of yourself.
