Ugh, not fun I am so sorry. My husband got shingles right by his eye a couple of years ago. Make sure you get your eyes checked. My husbands eye was fine but he did manage to give our 10 month old daughter chicken pox

I'm so sorry you've been hit with shingles. I hope the fact that you're getting early treatment means it can be treated easily. Hang in there!

Shingles stink. Ask David Letterman. Are we making you feel better or worse? You all are making me feel better! Thank you! I had my first case of shingles right after I turned 16, but haven't had them since, and that case was on my side, so not a big concern. They let me go for tonight, but I have an 8 am appointment with an ophthalmologist tomorrow to see how it is going. In the meantime, I started a megadose of Valtrex tonight and hopefully it was early enough that the anti-virals will help. Thank each and every one of you for your support. As soon as I can, I am getting the shingles vaccine even though I'm 52 - I will pay for it if I have too!

I'm sorry you're having to deal with shingles on top of all of the other eye issues. At least your 8 am appointment should seal the deal for the Guinness book of world records!

As soon as I can, I am getting the shingles vaccine even though I'm 52 - I will pay for it if I have too! Years ago my dad had it on his face and his eye was involved, the not so good news was that it took a while to settle down and he had to have ongoing appointments and treatment and then regular check-ups for quite some time. The good news that there was no ongoing issues (eyesight was normal etc) once it all healed and everything went back to normal and he never had it again.
I recently advised my Mother to get the shingles vaccine (she's over 70) and as a result I did some reading about it at just a few weeks ago. There is no clear determination as yet, but the current recommendation here is: (HZ = herpes zoster / shingles)
That's from our 'official' medical immunisation handbook, so it may be similar in the USA. So don't be too surprised if they tell you that you shouldn't have the vaccine just yet.

I am so sorry! Shingles are horrible. Plus, on top of all you've been through already, this just isn't fair. I hope they gave you the antiviral to lessen the effects.

Has anyone had shingles that is under age 60 or age 50? I have asked for the shot as well and was told I was too young. My mom had it and I am paranoid I will get it before I am old enough for the shot. I had it when I was in my 20's but I am 52 and not had it since.

I will be getting one as soon as they let me. According to pjaye, that may be a while. Husband is going to CVS to get one today.

I am sorry to hear this, it sounds just horrible, but it is truly great that your DH uttered that magic word that sent you looking for treatment right away. Getting treatment immediately seems to be the key, and you are doing that, despite having a crappy wait in the ER. Hope you are feeling better soon.
ETA: My insurance doesn't cover the vaccine til age 60. I keep asking, because I've heard some insurance companies cover it earlier, but so far, mine has not changed. I'm trying to wait, because the vaccine out of pocket is around $350.

So sorry to hear this. i hope you're feeling better soon! I got the shingles vax at age 50 since I've had chickenpox 3 times. My doc said no until I explained the situation and he agreed I was probably high-risk. I really hope you don't have to wait one year to get the vax. I hope that you've got it stopped in its' tracks since you were able to get treated so quickly.

Hope you're feeling better Elaine. You've been through the ringer lately!
My cousin was away in the Dominican for 2 weeks a few years back and contracted shingles. It was so bad and in her ear, the Doctors at the resort (they were at a very good resort with excellent medical staff) told her that she'd have to fly home because they were worried about it and didn't want her to be worse. My poor cousin had to fly with shingles in her ear and she said it was the worst pain she ever felt in her whole life. The doc at the resort had given her pain meds to take and she laughed and said "It will be okay" NOPE!! She took those suckers about ten minutes after take off she said it hurt so bad.

Yikes, I am so sorry to hear that you are going through this. But you know, in a way? I am glad for this thread because I haven't even really thought about shingles beyond that commercial I see with Terry Bradshaw. If it happened to me, I wouldn't even have recognized it-so this thread is kind of like a PSA for some of us. I hate that it happened to you, but maybe some good will come out of it? (I hope that came out the way I intended it to... )

Dang, I'm sorry. I hope that yours don't get worse and it is over soon. My FIL had them 20 years ago and he was miserable. I was watching tv last night and saw a commercial about the shingles vaccination and they kept mentioning about the dangers of it near the eye. I had never heard of that before, nor even the vaccination. The commercial I saw did not have Terry Bradshaw, just random office people. How did I ever miss one with him in it.Another thing to look into and I will agree with anxiousmom, if there is anything good about this, it is that you have served as a PSA for us. So I will offer a thank you to you. Feel better!
