If so, why? Just to save money? A tradition? A spouse who insists? (this is the situation of a friend of mine)

Nope, but I live in Texas. My rule is that I refuse to run the heat one day and the AC the next - which can sometimes be appropriate, but I just won't do it!

We started using ours here about 1 month ago in UT. Once it starts to hit over 80 upstairs it gets turned on.

We don't have A/C but I will not turn the heater on until after Thanksgiving. I live in San Diego so I promise we aren't freezing .

I wait until it is over 80 on my second floor for several days, usually that is from May through September. But we went solar spin don't worry about it as much now that my bill isn't over $400 a month.

When I'm hot, the a/c goes on. When I'm cold, the heat goes on.

I have allergies so we usually go from heat to a couple of days of windows so I can experience it, then AC all summer. We just set it at 76 and let it go. If it's warmer out and hot in the house, we turn the air up some days.

I know of people who are adamant about waiting until a certain date, I think for them it's about saving money more than anything. Not me, though, I have no problem running the heat one day and the AC the next.

Haha, I don't understand your question. I live in Tx, is there really a day the A/C isn't running?

When I'm hot, the a/c goes on. When I'm cold, the heat goes on. This. I won't be a martyr about the heat. I can't deal with the humidity, especially when trying to sleep at night.

I've been known to run the heat and the AC in the same day. Waiting for a certain day? Heck, ours has been running daily since at least the end of March.

I'm not going to be a martyr either! If I'm uncomfortable in the house, then I'm going to do what I can to make it comfortable. Whether that is just dressing warmer or cooler, turning on fans, or turning on the thermostat to warm it up or cool it down. I start with the least and work my way up.

no certain date, when the ceiling fans just don't keep the rooms upstairs cool enough the a/c goes on...or when the kids are complaining about the heat too much....or when the cats start panting...

We keep our house temp between 65 and 70 during the summer. If we need it on to make that happen, then we turn it on.

While we don't have A/C in the house, I am planning to get a portable one for my room.
I use A/C in the winter in the car. I may live in the PNW or SWC of BC I still like it cool year round. No month is too soon for A/C.

If the weather and temps followed the calendar I might.... but they don't. We usually turn it on if it's evening and 80 upstairs. Actually we just have it set to auto to turn itself on if those conditions are met. The upstairs runs ever so often but the downstairs set at the same temp hardly ever has to kick on.

Our house is close to 4,000 sf and was built in 1901. With the winter we had in Ohio you can imagine our heating bill. We tried to set our date for the ac to come on July 1 but we caved june 15. It was my husband decision to cave. I couldn't care less. I rather be hot than cold. My husband's the opposite.

We have volume ceilings which are hard to cool/heat. We only turn the air on when it gets over 100 degrees for several days in a row. Our last PG&E bill was $78. 8-)I think we've had it on maybe 3 times so far this summer.

After we had the a/c on, we had a couple cold snaps and the house got a bit chilly. I told the kids to wear pj's and socks to bed and add a blanket, that I'm not paying to heat the house when we've already paid to cool it down.
As tempted as I am a few days of the year to open windows, DH is very much against doing so because for the little benefit we get from cooling the house down for free or getting fresh air, the negatives of the coating of pollen all over things in the house and the pollen then gunking up our cooling system outweighs those few urges I have to get fresh air in the house.
So while there may have been a few days here/there where we didn't run either the heat or the a/c, we pretty much move from one to the other.

Heck no! We've had ours off and on since the end of April. I do not enjoy humidity and I don't like being hot (unless I'm at the beach or pool).
My parents are weirdos with rules about theirs. They only turn it on after Memorial Day and it has to be at least 95 for 2 days or so and the forecast has to say it's going to stay like that for several days. The second the temp dips below 90 the air gets shut off. I remember going outside and sitting in my car multiple times a day for at least a half an hour just letting the air conditioner wash over me.

While I agree with your DH regarding the pollen, I just have to indulge in some fresh smelling spring air after a winter of being closed up.

Well I live in New England and thus far the weather hasn't warranted a/c. We've only hit one or two days even close to 90 and the temps at night have been getting downright cold (46 one night last week). So I open the house up early in the morning and it gets cool and stays that way. We have window fans for all the bedrooms too. We don't usually need an a/c unless we have at least a stretch of 6-8 days of 90+ with high humidity. We did just put in a small pool (16x48) and I plan on using that to keep cool this summer.
