I live in Florida. My A/C is on more than it isn't, and I would venture that it is on 10/11 months out of 12.

Not a certain date, just needs to be really hot out for me to want air...usually my family out numbers me and gets it on sooner though...I love the heat!

When I'm hot, the a/c goes on. When I'm cold, the heat goes on. That's what I do. I especially cannot deal with humidity. And my hair really hates it!

We live in Arizona - late May is when it usually starts the 24/7 AC. It's not about saving money at that point..its quality of life.

Haha, I don't understand your question. I live in Tx, is there really a day the A/C isn't running? This. It generally stays on from March to October, and then when we need it from November to February. Even if it's not a really hot day, I need the AC on to push the humidity out.

No a/c here. The big debate here is when to turn the heating on and when to turn it off.

When I'm hot, the a/c goes on. When I'm cold, the heat goes on. This sums it up for me. I refuse to be uncomfortable in my own home. ETA: Brandy327, I can't believe how big your kids are now! Holy crap!

If so, why? Just to save money? A tradition? A spouse who insists? (this is the situation of a friend of mine) We haven't put ours up yet (central Montana). Usually it isn't a date, its when our living room is too hot to go into. Our weather has been weird this month. It will be 80-90 degrees one day, then rain for the next 3 (which does keep the temp down). Its still rather chilly at night (40 degrees). We will put it up when we are uncomfortable.

I am having trouble wrapping my mind around the fact that some people have not turned on the AC! I *know* we all live in different climates, but it is hard to imagine when where I live, this has been a hotter June than normal..upper 90's with humidity. Gack! Not looking forward to August!

Another Oklahoman here who has had her a/c on for at least a month or more. Trying to keep it at 75 to 77 so I usually have a box fan nearby to help.

No, I go by the temp only, not the month. We now live in a house with very little 2nd floor HVAC vents. The A/C is on all the time to try and keep the upstairs as cool as possible. Sometimes we put on a sweater while on the main floor. I've known people who say "No heat before Oct and no A/C before X month". I couldn't live like that. My comfort is very important to me.

We don't have one and never even turn on the heat...our heater it's broken and will not shut off at the temp you set so it will be 80 when you wake if you turn it on! This is one thing I love about San Diego :-)

Many people around here still use window units, including us.
The good news is that they are not as obnoxiously huge and cumbersome as they were when I was a kid, so we have actually put ours in, taken it out, and put it back so far this summer.
We like the fresh air, and in our room the ac was in a window that gets a great breeze if there is one. So after a really humid, hot week, we had a really nice week...breezy and in the 70s. So DH took it out for the week. It was nice.

We have a programmable thermostat. The heat comes on when the temp drops to a certain point (which changes through the day and night), and the A/C comes on when it reaches the temp it's programmed to start. I don't care what the date is, I'm going to be comfortable in my own home.

FL checking in. The AC is on almost all year long. There maybe a few weeks in winter where I actually turn it off. But I keep the ac set pretty high at 77 all year. Although in the heat of summer I will turn the upstairs AC down to 75 or so at bedtime and then turn it right back up in the morning.
It's the heat that I refuse to turn on, but will usually bite the bullet for a day or two, if I'm in long sleeves and socks and carrying around a blanket. LOL!

Ours comes on as soon as DH gets hot. He works outside and is like a walking furnace all the time anyway, so it comes on pretty early! We just got a new a/c a few weeks ago, so I don't feel too bad about how much it runs. He likes it really cold inside.

We keep our house temp between 65 and 70 during the summer. If we need it on to make that happen, then we turn it on. Brrr!!! I would freeze to death! (And go broke, I have never met anyone in AZ that keeps it that cold, it would kill your electric bill. I would guess at that temp in my house it would run close to $800 a month!)

I'm in the camp of when it's hot the AC goes on and when it's chilly it's the heat. Month of the year or day of the week have absolutely no bearing whatsoever. To be fair, my husband doesn't exactly subscribe to this, but he's away a whole lot so he gets no say.

The AC is used based on heat & humidity. With allergies, I can't sleep with the windows open. Thankfully, when we renovated our home we split the system which really saves money.

Raindancer, we live in Oregon. We were miserable when we went to Florida and my mom had hers set at 80. The back of our house is south facing with lots of windows and they tend to heat the house up. We set it to 65-66 at night to bring it back down. The upstairs is considerably warmer. My husband works nights and sleeps during the day. We have room darkening, insulated curtains but it still warms up quickly. It's hard to sleep when it's warm. Our electric bill isn't too bad. However, our water bill during the summer gets up there. The HOA says we have to keep our lawn green and the veggies need watering. Oddly enough, Oregon can be quite dry in the summer

No timelines for me...heat when it's cold, air when it's hot. I don't keep is as warm or as cold as I would like because the bills would be outrageous, but I can't stand to swelter. LOL

I live in the South. We turned the A/C on for the first time in March. Sure we went back and forth between heat and A/C for a few weeks, but there is no such thing as "waiting" at our house. If my dh tried to say any different, he would have one bitch-ass crazy wife on his hands (more so than usual!?!) and his life wouldn't be worth living.

We have been turning the AC off at night. It is still cooling off into the 50s and 60s at night, so no AC at night, shut up the house in the morning and run the AC from maybe noon to 8. We don't have to fight humidity so it works for us. AC has really only been necessary the last week or so. Two weeks ago it snowed around here.

Our unit is old and needs replaced. I have always preferred fresh air and open windows but I am suddenly not as comfortable with humidity as I have been in the past. I may have to bite the bullet and buy a new efficient model.

I think my AC has been on since April. Central air is the best invention in the history of ever, and I will not live without it again. I'd rather handwash all my clothes. I usually know it's time for the AC when I toss and turn all night because it's too hot and/or humid for me to fall asleep.
Now, the heat, I almost never run. I have a gas fireplace in my living room and will run that when I am cold, with no heat on while I sleep. (That's what I have a quilt for.) If we're in, oh, a POLAR VORTEX then I might flip the switch for the heat and put it way down on 60 or something, but that's just so the pipes don't freeze.

No certain date. When the heat or humidity make it too uncomfortable, it goes on. When it's nice enough for the windows to be open, it goes off. We've had it on a few times this summer, but it hasn't had to be an all day, every day thing. We have a warm weekend ahead, and I turned it on early this afternoon. If the forecast is right, it'll be off most of next week. I'll get our June electric bill, complete with the new Com Ed rate hike, next week. I'll reevaluate our AC usage when I see how ugly it is.

I do whatever it takes to be comfortable. And I have definitely run both the AC and heater in the same day.
