I like the Vienna Boys Choir. I don't like individual artists doing their thing to 'make it their own.'

I like Martina McBride's version as well as Carrie Underwood's. Simple instrumentation and a refreshing lack of vocal "pyrotechnics".

I think the one with that chick from Glee is probably the best I've ever heard.

I like Martina McBride's version as well as Carrie Underwood's. Simple instrumentation and a refreshing lack of vocal "pyrotechnics". Martina McBride would be my perfect version, except she repeats the first verse twice. Grrr.

It was from my high school choir when I was a freshman ... in our gym with the orchestra for the Christmas Concert. I remember it so well -- two freshmen sopranos for the beginning phrases, full choir for the second phrase and full orchestra full out choir for "fall on your knees, o' hear the angel voices ...."
It still brings me to tears.
Unfortunately ... it wasn't the days of video so it is memory with no artifacts.

Gorgeous carol that deserves a gorgeous voice. I'll be watching this thread!
After years of attending pretty traditional churches, we now attend one that has more contemporary music. One of my favorite parts about it - when they play "O Holy Night" it is very loud. I can sing my heart out without feeling self-conscious!

I love John Berry's version. I love that he sings without all the pomp. Josh Groban is good too.

I 3rd / 4th Josh Groban
I also for some reason love it in Mistletones when the girl from Sister Sister sings it for the audition (though it may not be her real voice and it's short. )

I am a sucker for old Motown music and Christmas music is no exception. I love the version by The Temptations. Here's a link to it on YouTube.Give it a listen -- it's a very different take on it with all the wonderful Motown bluesiness and vibrato.

Ohh I'm going to have to go check out some of the suggestions. I am partial to a female signing it though. It's my favourite Christmas carol. I love Celine Dion's version. Martina and Carrie's are also wonderful.

Al Martino. An oldie, but a goodie from the Dean Martin era.

My favourite is Kings College Choir Cambridge I think there's something very angelic and pure about boy sopranos. I don't like some you hear that sing it with their twist to it, warbles and all. It's a beautifully written piece of music so why do they feel the need to change it.
