I have a good friend on bed rest from major surgery and wants me to bring her "funny and light" books for her to read.
What would you recommend?

I enjoyed Gods Behaving Badly. (Basic premise is a bunch of Greek gods living in the modern day. Since, you know, they're immortal.)

I love the Miss Julia books. They need to be read in order, though. Miss Julia

I have loved the Janet Evanovich books. Very light and some made me laugh til I cried. If your friend if having abdominal surgery, she may not want to laugh quite that hard. I have also loved anything by Dorothea Benton Frank. Most of her lead characters are older (40s-60s) females and are all pretty much set in the South Carolina Lowcountry. Mary Kay Andrews is similar but sometimes a younger female lead and set in Atlanta.
Good luck to your friend! meredith

The cookie lady mysteries by Joanne Fluke are fun and light. I like to read them when I need something that requires no major thinking. Start with the chocolate Chip Cookie murder.

The Bloggess, Jenny Lawson (knock, knock mother f***er; metal chicken lady) has a couple books out. I've read the first one and got the second for Christmas. As long as lots of cursing doesn't bother you they're damn funny.

Laurie Notaro is one of my favorite light hearted authors. I have read all but her last book and have laughed until I cried with most of them. Sarcastic, self-deprecating, lovingly imperfect... I love them! Amazon Author Page

Just have her join here. It will suck her in and she won't have time to read anything else.

Has she read the Harry Potter books? I just finished the last one and LOVED them. I'm 38. I got them through Pottermore/Kindle Unlimited--except I had to pay for the last 2. Definitely worth it. Funny, but not enough to break any stitches.
I really liked Stiff. Mary Roach is hilarious and you learn something, too.

I second the Janet Evanovich suggestion (Stephanie Plum books ... they are numbered in order). And Harry Potter is absolutely universal if she hasn't read them already.
Another fun book series are the Elm Creek Quilts books by Jennifer Chiaverini, starting with The Quilter's Apprentice.

I really like Susan Elizabeth Phillips books. Contemporary romance, but not too sappy. My favorite is "First Lady."

Anne of Green Gables is funny and sweet, if she hasn't read that book, she really should. The Southern Sisters Mysteries by Anne George are super funny.

I've been recommending The Spellman File (first in a series) by Lisa Lutz. Light, very funny mysteries.

I third (or fourth) the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. I can read them in about 2 days. I laugh out loud a lot with them.
Also I agree with Sophie Kinsella books. Especially the Shopaholic series. She has others that are good but that is a good series book.

The Stephanie Plum books on audiobook are even better than reading them. The narrator makes all the difference when the plots get a little thin - especially in the books 10-20 range! Her voices for Lula and Gramma Mazar have me laughing out loud all the time.
