I just read your update and thrilled that the day went mostly well! I have to do the same thing with various family - I've learned to just check out mentally and then there aren't any emotions involved that could incite an incident or argument. Just going through the motions like you did is, as you found, the easiest way to deal with it all. If you don't engage, they can't engage.
Reading your posts I feel like I can relate so much in many ways. I have a hard time with many things that go on with some of the family and it always ends up being ME that looks like the rude one, to them, when in fact like in your case it really is their issue.
Glad your son and his friend had fun, and yes your DH was, I am sure, proud of you that you just went. Hopefully all of the rest of the family gatherings can go as well. Make mental notes of what worked and what didn't and go with that. !!

I'm glad it worked out for you! It's unfortunate that she'll never get it!

You're amazing, glad the day went well. Love the part about the skirt and necklace and acting like a lady, lol!
Hopefully your SIL will realize how much she screwed up by being a jerk, but those types rarely do. Glad your day turned out well though!

I only read to the point where you said Kennywood. That's not too far from me. Want me to show up and "accidentally " trip and spill my cheese fries on her? Or I could stand in line behind her and loudly express my opinion about my imaginary sister in law who is so understanding and how she travelled from afar to watch my son's baseball tournament where they lost to a team only because they brought in a relief pitcher who was amaze balls! How fun would that be!?! I think you may be my new favorite person. While I would never allow you to abuse your potato patch french fries, I would have loved for you to talk about the amaze balls pitcher
Your whole post made me smile. Can I ask.....where in the city are you? We are North.1. I get it about the cheese fries. Those things are soooo good! I am not actually in the Burg. I live about an hour or so north but in PA that is a hop skip and a jump. We have family in Aliquippa and are frequent travelers to see sporting events, go to the Strip District, shop, etc. I'm glad everything worked out and if you ever have a Saturday when you are bored, let me know. I'll do a bunch of hopping, skipping and jumping to meet a Refupea!

Thanks for the update. You really did well! Good for you. And I'm glad your DH reacted to the day the way he did. That needed to be said to you.

Way to go! It's always better not to sink to her level. You were a class act and she was miserable.

So Kennywood wasn't bad. And the only fireworks were those ones in the sky. My husband thanked me, for being so willing to spend time with his mom and dad. He realizes that I'm owed an apology, but that I will never receive it. He also realizes that I have every right to not want to be around his sister, until I get that apology. Thanks everyone one for listening, and helping me work through it!! No, you probably won't get that apology for a long, long time, if ever. It is what it is. How you decided to behave was your choice. Bravo. Getting through a day like that without regretting what you did or didn't do or say is a big accomplishment. Be sure to treat yourself to something special. I really believe that it's important at times like this.

You are AWESOME. I love that your DH recognizes his sister is behaving badly and appreciates your efforts.
I'm going to keep your response in mind next time my SIL behaves like this.

Family...sigh...I'm glad you put your big girl panties on (or in your case, your maxi skirt) and were able to enjoy your day. I will say that having a partner who gets "it" is important in these instances. You did not have to make your decision by yourself and it seems you knew dh had your back. Not that it matters, but I too would be livid with SIL and her uncalled for tirade.
