So with all the latest posts about the Epson PictureMate printer versus the Canon Selphy, of which I have weighed in on and expressed my disappointment with the Selphy, I have spent the better part of the day researching and comparing the two very similar yet very different compact photo printers. And in the end what I have decided is that... I'm really very confused! I know I want the PictureMate PM-400 because it actually prints 4x6 and 5x7 photos, whereas the Selphy doesn't produce a true 4x6 print, and all the reviews say the print quality of the PictureMate is superior to the Selphy. Both are wireless and can print photos from my iPhone and iPad. So before running out and buying the PictureMate on a whim today (and truthfully because it's not an easy purchase in Canada), I decided to try out my Selphy again. I had only used it about a ½ dozen times with less than favourable results so I adjusted a couple of settings based on some things I read online and I actually got some decent results! BUT, the photos are still not a true 4x6 print. I know I really "want" the new PictureMate but I'm not entirely sure it's a must have... Unless I can sell my Selphy. So what I'm looking for are honest reviews and opinions on whether or not the latest PictureMate is worth upgrading to or whether I should just stick with the Selphy!

The questions you have to ask yourself would be, Is it really critical that the prints are true 4x6? Do I really need to be able to print 5x7 at home? How often will I realistically use the new printer knowing the prints are almost twice as expensive as lab prints? Does it need to be portable? What kinds of projects will I be using the photos for?
I can understand it if a person is doing PL or pocket scrapping and it would be bothersome to have prints that are sliding around loose in the pockets and you don't want to go to the trouble to mount them onto larger cardstock. That would be a valid enough reason to me.
I sat on the fence with the Selphy for a long time before I bought one. I do mostly traditional scrapping on 12x12 layouts and the occasional mini book. The slightly smaller Selphy prints don't bother me at all because I trim down my 4x6 prints anyway to mat them onto 4x6 cardstock or patterned paper. I do like using larger prints on my pages sometimes (5x7 typically) so having that capability would be nice, but I already have a standard Epson inkjet that will print that size and usually when I want to print something larger I do it at Costco anyway simply because it's more cost effective.
I like that the Selphy prints have a protective coating over the top which is nice for photos in mini books that don't have page protectors. As I mentioned earlier in the related threads, I don't print from home (or at crops) all that often, so I would have the problems with clogged print heads, dried out ink cartridges, etc. which would really affect the affordability of having a portable inkjet.
So after a lot of thought, I decided for my purposes (which is primarily to have the ability to print decent photos when I'm at crops and for the occasional school project) the Selphy is adequate. I love that I can print wirelessly from my phone, camera or iPad. With a little trial and error, I've been able to figure out how to tweak my images in PSE to get the print quality I want. I typically edit most of my photos anyway so it really isn't adding any time to my process.
ETA: When I want a photo that is actually 6" long from my Selphy for some reason, I just cut it with my trimmer instead of snapping off the perforated sides. It *prints* that size, but for some reason the paper has the perforations so the resulting photo is smaller. Not sure why, it's weird.
ETA2: I don't use Selphy software to print from my computer, I use PSE or Scraproom/Gather software and have no problems whatsoever printing from either of those to the Selphy.

Here are some of the reasons why I love the PM-400. It is super convenient. I don't care that I'm paying more per print than at a lab. I've gotten more scrapping done in 4 months than the entire year of 2015. And because this little gem is sitting in my craft room I don't have to go anywhere to pick up the prints or wait for them to be ready. Instant gratification at it's best. It prints a true 4x6 AND 5x7. I thought I could deal with the Selphy's smaller size. But it got to be a pain. The pictures floating around the pockets were aggravating me. Then I mounted them on 4x6 cardstock. That added more work instead of speeding up the scrapping process, which I why I bought a portable printer in the first place. Those silly pieces at each end of the photo that I had to rip off also aggravated me after a while and slowed down my process. A bonus to the PM-400 is that it also prints out 5x7. I really like this size a lot! It looks great on 12x12, 8.5x11 and 6x8 size layouts, imo. I'm really enjoying the ability to use this size in addition to the 4x6. I can print from my iPhone easily. I can also print easily from my laptop. That Selphy software for my laptop drove me nuts. It was very difficult to navigate. Another aggravating feature for me. The PM-400 works great with any software I'm using on my laptop. Epson claims that the photos are good for 200 years. I could not find anything about the Selphy's photo life expectancy. Ali Edwards uses the Picturemate PM-400. If it's good for Ali, it's good for me! You can print directly onto cardstock in the 4x6 and 5x7 sizes. I've used the Picturemate to print onto my project life cards and for a large journaling space for a layout. You can't do that with the Selphy because of it's weird photo paper size set up. I mean, maybe you can, but again another pain in the butt aggravating issue that slows down my process. You can print onto matte or glossy photo paper. You can also buy the paper in bulk to save money. You can buy the ink separately with the PM-400. You can't do those things with the Selphy. I know the Selphy and Picturemate can do similar things. But after having the Selphy for 2 years and the Picturemate for only 4 months, I've printed 3 times as many photos with the PM-400 because of the ease for me. I really wish I had bought the Picturemate in the first place! So there you go. A few reasons why I love the PM-400 over the Selphy.

I'm no help but I just bought 2 albums off ebay so I am in the 'just buy it' mentality right now.

Can you talk about how you tweak your images. I'm reasonably happy w/the Selphy, but wouldn't mind a more vibrant print. I'm definitely not an expert and I just know enough of what to try to get things to look better. I haven't had a whole lot of time lately for scrapping so I still have to look stuff up. I took an online class by Linda Sattgast at Digital Scrapper last year that helped a lot. It was Fix Photos FAST and it includes a ton of PSE actions that you can just click on and it automatically applies them to the photo such as lighten, darken, warmer, cooler, whiten teeth, high pass, etc. The class includes videos that show exactly which actions she uses and in what order to greatly improve the images. It was worth every penny. She also has a follow up class called Enhance Photos FAST that I would also like to take, but I haven't had the time to even think about it. That one would be worth looking at too.

Still sitting on the fence about this ... Love that it prints true 4x6 and especially 5x7. I don't do Project Life or pocket scrapping, but I also don't print photos in bulk and then scrap them. I'm a tedious scrapper who does one layout at a time, designing the page in PSE and/or the Silhouette software and I print the photos as I need them for each layout. I would say that most times 5x7 will do the trick, but I hate that I have to order them online and then pick them up when I'm at Costco. Granted, I am at Costco once a week so this isn't usually an issue, although there have been many times where I have had to run out on a busy weekend just to pick up a few prints to scrap. For that reason, the convenience of this little printer would definitely outweigh the cost of each print. I have been reading about the print heads clogging if it doesn't get used often, and this would mean wasting some ink. Has this been an issue for anyone?
Zingermack, to answer your question about tweaking photos to get a better print from the Selphy, I use Photoshop Elements for everything I print. And as crazy4scraps mentioned, there are numerous actions that can help you do this in a breeze. I actually did get a couple of very good prints from my Selphy this past weekend - making me second guess purchasing the PictureMate. The reason I'm really interested in the Picturemate is for the photo size and the fact that you are not limited to "special" paper. I prefer matte prints over glossy, and I also print a lot on cardstock.

For that reason, the convenience of this little printer would definitely outweigh the cost of each print. I have been reading about the print heads clogging if it doesn't get used often, and this would mean wasting some ink. Has this been an issue for anyone? I had one of the original PictureMates that only did 4x6 photos back in the day and it *was* a huge issue for me. To the point that I literally opened the lid on the garbage can one day and chucked the whole thing in!
I had the printer for about a year and tried to use it several times. After getting less than 30 useable prints out of the first cartridge (new) the previous printing session, I had just replaced the ink cartridge AGAIN for the second time in six months. I ended up running the head cleaning at least three times and I was still getting streaky prints. I was just done at that point. It was out of warranty by then and it didn't work.
Those print packs cost me about $35 each and were supposed to print roughly 100 photos each, but at the rate I was going it was costing me over a dollar per 4x6 print. For that kind of money it made it worth my trouble to go out of my way and drive to Costco. And with that level of frustration, I would happily stand in line behind 15 people at Costco to pick up my prints because I still would be back home scrapping faster than trying to get one decent print out of that printer and losing my mind doing so!
Now, I have no experience at all with the newer ones and it's possible that now they are better. However, I do have an Epson Workforce Pro inkjet in my office right now that's a couple years old that I use for general stuff (not typically photo printing) and even that thing will produce crappy, streaky prints (even just black text!) unless I am printing at the absolute highest quality. I use it week in and week out, so it's not like it sits idle for any long amounts of time. The only thing that saves it from getting tossed in the can too is that at least this one has high capacity ink cartridges so I only have to replace them a couple times a year.
All I can say is if you know you won't be using it **frequently**, go and read some of the recent negative reviews at Amazon because they are pretty much all saying the same thing I am, so it is still an ongoing issue. It might very well be the best printer on the market in the history of ever if a person uses it every day or even every few days, and if that is you, awesome! Maybe it will be right for you then. But if that's *not* you, it might not be worth the expense and the headaches.
I think if I was going to spend more money on a dedicated photo printer specifically with the ability to make larger prints I would just buy a regular photo printer that handles standard letter sized paper and be done.

Thanks for your input crazy4scraps! I have read some reviews about the clogging issue and I am definitely not the person who would be using this every day, or even every couple of days for that matter! So it sounds to me like I should just stick with printing at Costco, maybe printing the odd picture with my Selphy and put the $$ towards an order at SSS!!

So it sounds to me like I should just stick with printing at Costco, maybe printing the odd picture with my Selphy and put the $$ towards an order at SSS!! You're welcome. I hate to feel like I'm always bagging on those little printers especially when everyone else seems to really love them. But it really does matter how often it will get used and not too many people seem to comment on that. The constant head cleaning rendered mine effectively useless, and I wish someone would have mentioned that somewhere before I spent my money on it (along with the money for three ink/paper refills that ended up in the trash one way or another). Such a waste. When the cost for a standard sized photo print goes over a dollar each, no amount of convenience is worth that to me. At least with the Selphy, when I pay for a print pack I end up getting ALL of the prints I've effectively paid for in advance to actually print. If they don't turn out due to lighting or whatever, that's on me for not optimizing the print before sending it to the printer. They end up costing about 30¢ each, and while that's still expensive (to me) at least it's something I can live with. If Canon would come out with non-perforated paper that you trim to the printed edge yourself creating a true 4x6 print, I think more people would be happy with the Selphy.

Ok, so I know I said I had changed my mind about this when I heard about the print heads clogging... and I did... but somehow this little printer has got me wanting it and it's hard for me to let go. So I have a question for those who have it and use it and love it... I saw someone say that you can use matte photo paper. What is the brand of matte photo paper you've had the best results with? I much prefer matte prints to glossy - it's one of the reasons I'm not a big fan of my Selphy - but it doesn't seem like matte photo paper is easy to find ... in Canada anyway!

I haven't tried matte paper yet but I am able to use Canon paper. I just buy it from Amazon. I know Canon has matte paper you can use.
And in regards to the print heads clogging, I haven't had an issue. I've had it for over 5 months now and I definitely haven't used it daily. Or even weekly. Actually, it has sat unused for several weeks and I just used it the other day. No problems at all. I'm guessing they fixed the print head issue with this newest model. Where have you read there are issues with the PM-400?

Do you know what scrappymom, honestly I have looked for bad reviews about the PM-400 and I'm hard pressed to find one... I think I may have seen 1 about print head clogging but every single thing I have read (and believe me, I have ready every review out there) tells me that this is a sweet little printer. Sure, cost is higher than picking up prints from Costco, but everything I see says prints are great and if cost isn't a factor then you won't be disappointed. Even if it costs me $1 per print, convenience is so worth it... So after deliberating for a week and wondering whether or not I should or shouldn't... I finally pulled the plug and hit the "buy" button. And to be honest, it is the best I've felt all day!

I have the Picturemate Charm and I love it! Best purchase I ever made. If I don't use it for awhile (a long while)I have had to clean the heads more than the recommended 3x to get them printing properly. The quality is great and so is the convenience. I really want the new one for the 5x7 print option. Hmmm......maybe I can sell the charm and get the new one lol. Enjoy your new toy!

Let us know how you like it. I'm in the same boat you were. I've had the Selphy for 3 years. The prints are ok. They are darker than the same photo printed on my big Epson or at Persnickety. So I have to compensate for that when I edit.
The ink and paper is super cheap. But I don't like that it's not true 4x6 because I do pocket scrapping. I like the idea of being able to print a 5x7 too.

Just been too busy to open the box. I read somewhere that the paper and ink that comes with it is barely enough to get it up and running, and I stupidly didn't buy an extra print cartridge when I purchased the printer! The main reason was because the ink/paper pack available for this printer only has glossy photo paper, and I am definitely NOT a glossy print girl, but somehow matte paper (for me in Canada) is really difficult to find! So for anyone using one of these with matte paper, what brand are you using and where do you buy it!

Hey streetscrapper how's it going? Have you been able to play with it? Is it working ok for you? Believe it or not scrappymom, I have not even put the ink cartridge in it yet! I've wanted to, but I have been so busy this past week it feels like I don't even know what my scrap room looks like!! However, I promised my brother that I would bring him a couple of pictures when I see him this weekend so this is definitely my excuse to get it going and print off a couple of photos. I will let you know! (By the way, I sold my Selphy last week... so now I feel completely justified for buying this new one!! )

What kind of ink does it take? Can you buy it separately or just in a print pack? I tried googling, but only come up with print packs for it. If you can only purchase it with the 4x6 photo paper, and printing 5x7 photos, don't you start collecting extra photo paper?

Does anyone run a PictureMate on Windows 7? I bought a Instax printer, but it won't run with Windows 7, which I didn't realize until I bought it. It should run on wifi, but I can't get it set up on wifi either. So frustrated...

I just bought the ink pack from Amazon last week. I use Canon glossy paper because I prefer it over Epson's. And I've found that my ink has lasted way more than the amount of paper they send you with the combo pack.

I bought the paper/print pack from Epson only because I don't have 4x6 photo paper and the price was better than buying just the ink. But I'm not a big fan of glossy prints. Matte photo paper seems to be tough to find... in Canada anyway... and when I've looked on the Epson website for photo paper, the "luster" paper doesn't list this printer as one that can use the paper - in fact, it seems to be strictly "glossy" paper that is recommended. Not sure why... has anyone used matte or luster paper in this printer?

I FINALLY had a chance to set up the printer. I must say that I did encounter a few little glitches trying to get it connected, but I have just printed off two photos. WOW. I am definitely impressed. I thought the last photo I printed with my Selphy, after making some recommended adjustments, was good, but the difference between that photo and the two I just printed with the PictureMate is stunning. I will say that I am not a fan of glossy prints, and the two I just printed are on the glossy paper that came with the printer, so I will have to pick up some matte photo paper. But at the end of the day, I am very happy that I made the change!
