Yes. Always have, always will. I love shooting at the range and am considering shooting competitively at some point when I finish grad school later this year.
I applaud any woman who takes the time to take a shooting class and to learn about how to handle a gun if she has never handled one before. There are some excellent instructors out there and know how to teach women to shoot.

DH owns one, and has his CCW (though he does not carry). It stays in a lockbox unless it's is at the range with him. I do not own one and although I do enjoy trap shooting outdoors with my dad, I will never own one.

No. Never gone hunting or know anyone who hunts (that's the main reason for gun ownership in New Zealand). Same here for us here in Canada

We do not for various reasons. Not a hunting family and I have never felt the need for one for protection in my home or while I'm out. To each their own as long as your (general) gun is not being flaunted in my face.

My DH owns guns. The rifles are in the gun safe all the time. His handgun he usually wears most of the time. He has a concealed weapons permit. I avoid the guns. I am not comfortable around them and I have no desire to shoot them.

Personally, I do not believe in guns. I would be very careful in letting my kids (when they were younger) go into houses with guns. Gun owners like OP are great. If the country was filled with people like that I'd have zero issue. The problem is there are rabid idiots out there and I worry about them.
I have plenty of friends who own guns. They are all smart and safe about it.
What frustrates me the absolute most is that people think that because I am liberal and don't believe in guns personally, that I want no one to have guns. I just want guns in the hands of smart, cautious people, like OP seems to be.

We don't. Don't think we ever will. But I have nothing against them. I would love to learn to shoot and go to the range if someone offered.

We have many guns: rifles, shotguns and handguns. We keep most of them in a safe. My DH is a hunter and has a conceal weapon license. We always have one by the bed (and a lock box for when the grandkids are over) and usually take one with us in the vehicle.

Yes. Several shotguns, two AR-15s, several hunting rifles and a few pistols. They are locked away, unloaded in a gun safe that only dh & me can get into.

I get what you're saying about doing new things, but your logic makes no sense. Are you planning on experiencing being shot as well? Dh plays airsoft so we have toy guns, but like the other British peas it's not something that really features in life here, thankfully. I suppose the answer is that my logic really only has to make sense to me. I see it like this: I can't react out of fear of the unknown. If I am afraid of a thing, learning more about it, trying it, seeing what it is all about will help me lessen the fear and come at an argument from a position of the known rather than the unknown. I can know in theory, but not in practice. And it is silly to extend that out to being shot as well. Kind of like asking if since I am afraid of heights and decide that I want to confront that fear by jumping out of airplane and asking if I am planning to jump without a parachute too. You didn't mention anything about fear in your first post. If that's what you're trying to overcome, fair play. I was responding to the part where you said you felt you couldn't have an opinion because you hadn't experienced it. There are plenty of things that I have not/will hopefully never personally experience but I can still have an opinion about them.

Sort of. We have some collectible rifles that my grandfather passed along to us. Some have been in the family for generations. I don't know if any of them function, but knowing my grandfather, my guess is they do. He was a retired Army Major who worked his way up from a 17yo Private. He was all about old school Army discipline. I digress a bit...but man I miss him.

Thank you all for your responses & being civil. We have guns for several reasons, hunting, protection and because it's a right we believe in.

I've always said that I fully supported responsible gun ownership, but never felt that I would ever want or need a gun.
I have begun to reconsider it. It's on my mind, but honestly, I'm still most likely years away from owning a gun.

Yes. His, mine and ours. We are an LE family, so that is just a given - had them all our adult lives, and although dh didn't grow up with any in his home I did and learned very early on about safety. Our kids did too early on.
Aside from the LE aspect, the reasons we have them is for protection, sport and exercising our right to bear arms. I really love to target shoot and we have a beautiful indoor range that opened up nearby last year that is more fun than the outdoor range I used to go to. I really enjoy it and would encourage those of you wanting to learn or try it out to go ahead and try it even if you don't plan on owning your own firearm.

DH recently got his LEO certification and may end up carrying for work (long story - SOPs and paperwork struggles), but he knows it's a dealbreaker to me to have it on our property, so if he DOES need to carry for work, at the end of his shift, it will stay locked at work. If his bosses refuse to provide for that, he'll take a different position.
We do not hunt, and although we live in a rural area, the critters generally come out at night when we're not out, so we don't need it for protection from wildlife. We have an alarm system, security cameras, and a neighbor who's a cop, and that's good enough for me even though DH is gone regularly overnight. I worry more about DD and her impulse control issues around a gun than I do about someone trying to break in and get us.

Never have. I'm not in absolute objection to guns. My kids have all shot bb guns. I'm okay with friends having guns that are locked up. I do not like our society's obsession with them. I have cousins who are gun lovers, and they post about all the guns they build and buy on FB. My dad has guns. I'm okay with people being responsible, and I have gun loving friends who think that there need to be more gun laws.

No, we don't have guns in the house but not because I'm opposed. I grew up in a very rural area in a family of hunters. My grandfather had quite a few guns behind the door in his kitchen, loaded and ready to go. My dad had a couple of guns loaded behind his bedroom door. Never once did my brother or I mess with those guns. We were taught at an early age to respect them and also how to shoot them when we were old enough.
We just don't have the need for guns at this point. We don't hunt and aren't into shooting for recreation so we've just never bought any.

Never.
There seems to be a high proportion of gun owners on this board compared to the general public. Any theories on why that would be?

I have to say that your response is curious to me. To me an answer like "of course" is one to give when asked about something incredibly obvious. The poll results show a rather close split between the haves and the have-nots, with the have-nots a bit ahead right now. So it's clearly not something that falls into a category of being an obvious possession for the vast majority of people. So I guess my curiosity is in why you chose to answer that way. Is it because you wanted to imply that owning one is something everyone obviously should do, or because it's something nearly everyone you know does do, or something completely different?

Never. There seems to be a high proportion of gun owners on this board compared to the general public. Any theories on why that would be? I think for the most part, gun owners are not public about owning guns. I answered here, because for me the board feels anonymous. Any survey about gun ownership will vary based on where the survey is taken.

I'm not opposed to gun ownership at all. I do think that people should be responsible as you are and have guns locked up particularly when children are in the house. I think parents need to be held accountable for gun safety in their homes. I'm strongly opposed to having a young child learning to shoot an automatic weapon as was the case in the accident at a firing range that killed the instructor. Why on earth would a young child need to learn to handle such a weapon? I think there should be universal background checks and everyone who has a gun should be licensed by proving they know how to handle the weapon.
In other words, there are common sense things that can and should be done to make gun ownership a right AND a responsibility.

Nope...grew up with them as my dad was a LEO, but DH and I never felt the need to own one. I briefly wondered why your dad's astrological sign played a part in his gun ownership. Must get more coffee.
